Today in a parking lot, I saw (FROM BEHIND) a young woman, bare-legged in mid-height boots, wearing a tube dress so short I could see her underwear. The BOTTOM of her underwear. Not through the skirt, just right out there in the air. It was like a long t-shirt that didn't even fully cover her rear. I can't even IMAGINE what she was thinking. She was with her boyfriend and had been shopping, so not a professional situation, so to speak.

I came home to lie down and recover from it. Honestly, it is 20 degrees and snowy out. And here I thought butt crack was as bad as it could get.

Wow... I see that from time to time in SoCal, but you have to be pretty determined to bare that much when the snow is thigh high!

The only time I can forgive this is on a beach, with a skirt over a bathing suit bottom.

I would not a lie down AND a cup of tea lol. I see a bit of this type of dressing amongst the teens here... just can't explain it.

Wow, now that is something I wouldn't have imagined. I am still not over the hotpants looks from last summer. I guess the trending "no pants" look really is on the streets.

I can kind of understand this theoretically in hot weather if you are maybe taking direct inspiration from certain music videos and your friends think it's cute, but I also saw it on a bitterly cold rainy night in Scotland, with bare legs. Okay I know it's warm at the club, but first you have to get there from the tube station, on foot, in your stilettos.... props to those girls, they may be foolish, but they are TOUGH.

Oh Dear!
This reminds me of a woman (not young, not slim) in my Pilates class last week wearing really short stretchy shorts when everyone else was in leggings and Tees- definitely not 'normcore'

Una, last time I was at the Philadelphia train station, there was a girl with her jeans way down below her underwear, the way the boyz have been wearing them for so long that it's now a look that's completely over.

Like, pulled way down on purpose and belted at mid-butt, with panties (not boxers) exposed at the top.

I honestly think some of these women don't think to check the back view before leaving the house.

I once saw someone wearing tights as pants - CONTROL TOP sheer tights. From the back you could see half her butt and a whole lot of the control top. I'm not sure if maybe she thought the control top was like wearing shorts???

Just thinking about wearing something like that makes me shiver for her.

@Diana - I've seen several girls wear pantyhose as leggings. To classes. That's one of those things that makes me shudder a bit.

I don't even like leggings! I want to tell people they forgot their pants.

Once I was at a fast food place and a late 20 something woman had her dress tucked up in her belt in the back. I'm talking all of the skirt...full underwear view. I was baffled! I wanted to believe it was a rest room snafu, but my friend claimed there was no way she didn't feel it...sitting on those plastic seats, walking around in air conditioning. We debated telling her but my friend won.

There's some part of me that wishes I were confident enough to pull that off. There's another part of me that thinks really no one could ever be that confident. I mean, I like to think I don't have innate issues with spongy bits but that does seem a but unsafe.

Maybe she lost a bet? Or spilled soup on her pants?

at least she had regular underwear on, if she'd had on a thong, the view would have been even . . . breezier. . . and freezier!

Yikes. Cringe-worthy.

DH and I went out for NYE once, and a woman seated at our table was wearing a dress that was too short, too shiny and too low-cut. We just figured she was young and didn't know better. We saw them again another year and she was seated. Her dress had a demure neckline and long sleeves and I thought she looked AMAZING... until she stood up. Just like what Una saw, I was sure she forgot her pants (but she was wearing a thong as evidenced by a bare bum and tell-tale lines - EW).

Sounds like someone thinks the only way to "get a man" is with her body. I wish we could give all these girls a transfusion of self worth. I mean if they rely on this behavior, where will this get them in life? Can only hope it was a blip, an experiment..nothing wrong with exploring choices, even bad ones, are useful as long as we don't pay too much for them. One just hopes this does not become her way of getting things in life! But sad.

Argh .... I hate to say this but its normal here .... In the middle east o_O ..... So much so that authorities have now put up boards outside mall entrances saying please dress respectfully. I have seen butt cheeks hang out of very short shorts ... A teenager was wearing that.....and she was not slender.

There is a time and place to wear all that. Why in a public mall?! Beats me.

Idk if I'd necessarily feel comfortable making assumptions about the wearer's self respect. It takes a lot of body confidence and a certain imperviousness to the disapproval of other generations to pull it off. Sometimes I wonder how much is spandex creep? I mean you look in the mirror, it's short but pulled down looks good on your bod (Hey if you are young and want to flaunt it, now is your window of opportunity).

Also it's not like this look or the short-short look exists in a vacuum, pop divas wear it on stage all the time, it shows up in music videos, porn of course, magazines, graphic comics, TMZ of stars getting out of cars. I mean there are problematic sides to it obviously, and the blurring of public and private space is confusing.

Neel - I think some public malls pretty much belong to teenagers, at least my closest one does. My husband turned a corner in an unused indoor corner by an escalator one afternoon at our mall and accidentally saw two teens having sex. All three of them were HIGHLY embarrased. He was just looking for a shoe store and was a little traumatized.

ETA: changed 'confidence' to 'body confidence' to clarify what I meant.

Rabbit, I agree. I don't know that this girl was not self-confident. She was generally otherwise nondescript. And she was with her BF, who maybe likes that look. And it is all over the place on TV.

I tried not to look closely enough to see what the undie situation was.
