I'm an absolute nerd!!

I did a little interview on local cable TV today, basically to talk about the Alzheimer Society. I though it went OK, but watching it back I realize I started answering every question with an enthusiastic: "Absolutely!" Like, get a new adverb. Oh well, no one really watches local cable do they? Thankfully, I can't send you a link to the performance. At least I had an OK hair day!

Don't be hard on yourself! I'm sure all your audience noticed were your enthusiasm and great hair.

Hee-hee. I've said "absolutely" many times myself. I guess I'm a nerd, too. Chalk it up as a need to expand your vocabulary.
If we never critique ourselves, we never improve. That said, don't beat yourself up over it. To err is human.

Add me to the list of absolute nerds! It's a bit of a catch phrase of mine, without me being all that aware of saying it. Better than saying 'Um . . .' or 'like' over and over

I think it's very common to not like how you sound in an interview- for me, even the sound of my voice sounds funny to me when it's recorded.
Nobody but you will be half as critical as you are of yourself.

Being enthusiastic is a good thing, and I bet you were very effective in raising awareness about the Alzheimer Society.

Don't feel bad. I once had a student inform me I used the word "actually" 45 times in an 50 minute class--almost once every minute! I knew something was going on because the entire group started cracking up by the 30 minute mark. Needless to say, just being aware of this verbal tic made me avoid that word like the plague in the future. I have a feeling you'll never use "absolutely" again in an interview.

It's great to be enthusiastic! I wouldn't worry about it too much. Like others have said, chalk it up to experience.

Awwww. Thanks everyone. Especially Gaylene for sharing your experience. What a cheeky class! True, my performance was all in aid of a good cause. I will try to rein in my "absolutely"s in the future.

In a speech I gave in sixth grade, someone counted 47 "umms."

But guess what? I was still a finalist in the provincials that year!

I guess the standard was pretty low.

Never mind. We live and learn. And I know you looked fab!!

ETA: I am far worse than you. My inner enthusiast always has me gushing "absolutely!" and worse -- (cringing) -- "TOTALLY."

I am not sure i would be able to say anything comprehensive in an interview so "absolutely" is absolutely fine

Goodness, it sounds like you did great! Some people don't handle interviews well at all and um and ah and struggle to be articulate. Sounds like you were postive and engaging. Well done.

I'm guilty of overdoing "actually" myself. And "awesome" seems like it had its day long, long ago. At least "absolutely" sounds like something a grown-up would say. I wouldn't beat myself up about it--I can't even imagine getting through a TV interview without looking and acting like a deer in the headlights.

I think we've all been there! You survived it and it's over! I am sure since we are own worst critics, It is likely that it didn't look as bad to others.

Oh geez, I cringe with you in sympathy. Everytime I see myself on camera I look so doofy. But we just have to give ourselves a lot of GRACE and proceed as usual....I'm sure you were not as dorky as you felt!

Lol. It takes practice - and hearing and seeing yourself - to speak publically (and no I don't approve of the older, OED spelling publicly, hehe). So consider that under your belt now
