Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I don’t relate to the mother-daughter aspect of this, but the larger themes of style, nonconformity, and age are thought provoking.
I don’t envy young people now — I’m glad I grew up when I did. But I wasn’t a rebellious kid and I didn’t go extreme with goth/punk influences in my dressing when I was a teen or in college — it just didn’t suit my life (I worked in an office from the time I was 16), and I had seen the fights my parents had with my sister 10 years earlier over her circa 1969 cutoff denim that exposed butt cheek and other hippie styles that scandalized my conservative parents who were born during the depression and had lost their peers at war.
I feel like I have more freedom now to dress how I like than at any other time in my life, if i ignore the fact that my body is not slim anymore and most clothes just don’t look as objectively “good” on me now as they used to. Oh well. Gotta wear something, right? So may as well enjoy it and express ourselves!
