Ha! I asked Angie this question once and she advised me not to dye them.

And I didn't.

And I was glad.

And started wearing them more often in the cooler months than I had expected to wear them.

If they are anything but 100% cotton, I would be very, very cautious. But I would keep them white.

And I cannot find even my first pair of white jeans yen the very thought of dyeing them seems blasphemy to me!

Perhaps I should have confessed that I have 5!! pair of white jeans...2 bootcuts, 2 straight leg, 1 boyfriend. I'd like to dye either a bootcut or a straight. Maybe both if they turn out well. Now would you dye a pair?

Fess up Carter, how many pairs of white cut off shorts do you have?

I also say leave them. Or cut them. White doesn't stay white forever...

(Do I sound like someone who also has 5 pairs of white jeans?).

Elizabeth, I don't have any white cut off shorts! Woohoo...did we find a hole? I do have a pair of boyfriend fit off-white denim capris from Boden. Super comfy for loungewear, but they don't even register on the JFE meter.

Cut offs. Don't dye. I tried dying 100% cotton capris red and they turned salmon.
I'd cut them longer than you think you need and turn the hem up one, so the fray is pointing up.

I can't imagine having an EXTRA pair of white jeans. I have 2, three with the ivory BR skinnies, and could use more as they are always in the laundry or hanging to dry. Don't dye them. Just plan more white jean outfits.:)

I would not dye. The results tend to be much lighter than you think they will be. Royal purple = lavender. Chocolate brown = tan. Red = salmon or pink. You get the idea.

I think white shorts are a better idea.

OK, so if your heart is set on dyeing a pair, I would dye a straight as opposed to a bootcut, because I think that skinnies and straight-legs come in more colors than bootcuts do.

As for me, I would dye them cream, because I love cream and found that I wore a lot of it in the cooler months—I like it better than white when the weather turns cool. And it goes with just about everything.

I will say that last year I found a pair of jeans at EB that were a mustard color that I was drooling over...but they didn't fit me. How about mustard?

First watch a ton of YouTube tutorials.
Do you have a top loading washer? Much easier . Double the dye you think you need for a dark color at the very least. If you're doing stovetop method get the water HOT! And you'll have to stand and stirr stirr stirr for at least an hour or so or else you'll have a " unique" tie dye look

Nope, I wouldn't dye them. Extra white jeans are great to have, given their propensity to show dirt. They're the understudies of the wardrobe world.

So many devotees to white jeans! I just don't wear them. Although I used to wear them regularly, I only wore my bootcuts once last year. I haven't worn the straight legs or boyfriend pairs that I added this Spring. (A hole filling exercise that probably wasn't a hole at all!) Hopefully I will wear them in the Fall. But there is no way I will ever need 5 pairs unless I plan to drive an ice cream truck in retirement. I love the idea of cutting one pair. I'll have to do some research/watch some youtube videos on dying another pair. I'm totally fine with not being able to reliably pick the color. Anything in the brown family, from cream to chocolate, would see more use in my wardrobe.

I have a front load washer, so I'll have to look into the issue Jennifer brought up.

I dyed some linen pants this summer. They were a weird pale green that I just couldn't get a handle on. I dyed them navy blue and they turned out navy blue. I followed the directions (for Rit) as to the dry weight of the garment, using my postal scale for accuracy. You can see them here pictured in #4 and #5:

I really like them, but only one or two people liked those outfits. This group likes white pants! I am actually thinking of dyeing a heavy heavy tan cotton sweater I have. Since I went grey I don't like tan very much.

ETA: I dyed them in a huge pot on the stove. The pot is not for food. I keep it in the garage for dyeing.

I'd go for cream. The darker colors have never worked for me on lighter fabrics. Dharma Trading has good info on dyes.

Heck, I can't believe you, woman! There you are, living in a warm climate, and you don't wear white bottoms????? Sheesh, I have one white long shorts and one knee length shorts and they are not enough for me.... I have white jeans and cream jeans and they are not enough for me....

Claire tried "tea staining" her white jeans and it didn't work. She bleached them back.

Carter, You must get into the white jeans craze...I absolutely live in my crops and boot cuts...They are going to fall and hopefully, if I am brave enough to endure the Michigan snow and slush, into winter...I am definitely taking them on a month long vacay to Florida in January...With a black turtleneck and boots, who said Jackie O?...or Audrey Hepburn?...We have to get you going with white jeans...They add such panache to your style...smile...not that your style needs any help...

I love all these replies! I must really be missing the boat on white bottoms. Before I do anything untoward to them, I will promise to try to wear them as often as possible. I am wearing my Boden white capris today to work at home, and I do like them, so we'll see... In the meantime, I'll be researching the dying process:-)
