If you could "un-invent" an item of clothing...

.....what would it be? The fashion and style world would be a better place without this item.

At the risk of alienating almost everyone, I'm going to wish we could "un-invent" basic outerwear T-shirts. (Not the underwear kind that blokes like to wear). It's become the most worn item in the world and THAT is a shame. A big shame.

Mom jeans. Pleats at the waist then widen in the hip/thigh and taper at the ankle.

Capris. There are very few people who can pull them off, but they are everywhere as soon as the temps go up even a little bit, most especially in khaki.

I would like to undo any sort of faux bra: bralettes, bandeaus, shelf bras, etc.

I'm still thinking on this one, but I must agree with Angie on the t-shirts. they flatter no one. I have a bunch of them from 5k races. I use them for painting, yucky cleaning jobs like cleaning the oven or anything involving bleach, and a for a dirty day of volunteer work at the animal shelter. I continue to beg race directors for "baby-doll" tees for the women!

Angie...I have to totally agree with you .!!

I DON"T own ANY tee shirts at all...embellished or not...Can't stand them . They are extremely unflattering , unstructured and unattractive on me, not to mention the shrink and fade element to them Ughh. And will never own one.

Noooo...we can't get rid of t-shirts. They're so comfy for doing yard work and sleeping in.

Ummmm...those stripey terry cloth tube tops (you know the kind that redneck ladies wear with no bra at approximately waist height).

Ah! Here's one for you--Crocs clogs worn as street shoes, particularly in garish colors. In my book, those share the pinnacle of tackiness with t-shirts! Crocs should be worn by medical professionals in the workplace OR as yard/house shoes, IMO.

For me it's Birkenstocks. Especially when worn with socks (which seems prevalent here in Northern California). Ick, ick, ick, ick, ick!!! Sorry to anyone who is a fan due to the comfort level, but to my eyes, ick, ick, ick, ick, ick!!!

You know, looking at everyone's responses, I don't think I'd actually like to un-invent most of the things listed. I'd rather just un-invent the modern American attitude towards clothing. Even Crocs and tshirts have their place in life. Wear them to bed, as loungewear, in the garden, hospital, etc. But the real problem is that people don't have the sense and decency to leave it at that. People don't seem to have a clue anymore anymore about dress codes or appropriateness, like that woman who told me the place I'm currently working in is "business casual." The owner of the company was wearing hiking boots, an oversized plaid shirt, and carpenters jeans on the first day.

On that note, I would vote to uninvent carpenters jeans. I don't even think carpenters really need them anymore, judging from what I see on HGTV...

Soo I can imagine life without t-shirts since that's how I grew up - they only existed as underwear or part of PE wear. However, I am all for them as loungewear and such, even though I agree that in US they are really overused.
I don't have very strong feelings against one particular item, although I do find jumpsuits silly. I do agree with Maya about the overall issue of appropriateness (is that a word?).

I do wear Tshirts- usually layered but more like this:

They work well for me in the summer but they must be long and fitted with cap sleeves.

Let's see here, I have to agree with the person who said it would be good to uninvent bad crop pants. A few years back, I bought some David Kahn, cropped, wide leg, jeans, with a wide folded up hem, and wore them to my class reunion, thinking I looked cute! This was pre YLF.
Tube tops are a pretty bad invention too.
How about Daisy Duke shorts? I still see them at the state fair.

Can I pick something from the past? Because I say corsets. Without them, we'd have saved previous generations years of physical pain (and often deformities/health conditions) and society might even have a healthier attitude toward the shape of women's bodies. I just wonder what the whole landscape of fashion would look like if we'd never forced women to conform to one idea of beauty!

Oh.. Ele! I love corsets! Modern models are sexy and comfy! They are the most flattering piece of lingerie!

Calf length voluminous A line skirts. My mother has a penchant for these no matter how much I shout at her in the changing room!! because she says they cover the marks on her legs (which no one notices) and her tummy (which no one else notices) Note to self I must talk her into letting me post bodyshape and outfit pictures perhaps you guys will have more luck convincing her!!! x

Haha, Rute! I knew at least someone (and I had a hunch it might be you) would object to my choice! I completely agree that corsets can be beautiful and sexy, and corset styling has done loads for the evening wear industry, as well. I just think, all in all, that they've probably done more harm than good to womenkind. I suppose this is just my version of a feminist rant!
