I have always loved that Marilyn Monroe wore Chanel #5. It is a timeless fragrance and one that I love as my best friend wears it and wears it well.

It is interesting, because I would not wear a friend's signature scent. For me, Chanel #5 and Flowerbomb (by Victor and Rolf) are both off limits, because very close friends wear these fragrances. I think they both smell divine, so it is only that I don't want to be seen as "stealing" their signature scent.

I don’t wear perfume or cologne for the most part — I have one bottle of scent in a drawer (Acqua do Gio) and only use it occasionally. My husband is very sensitive to strong scents, and I’m not wild about them either.

My mom’s favorite was Chanel No. 22. Much harder to find than 5. I used to have a bottle but it’s long gone. I wouldn’t mind having that again.

Regarding scent memory triggers...I bought a bottle of Shalimar perfume (spendy) as a Christmas present for my mom 3 years ago (her favorite scent, and she wore it daily). She passed away a couple of months later and I kept her perfume.

The only time I wore it, at the end of the day my dear husband said he didn't know why, but he could hardly stand to be near me that day. He and my mom did NOT get along. I told him I had on her perfume and we realized that was the problem. I passed the perfume along to my sister in Indianapolis and she loved it.

If I could only wear one perfume for the year it would be the French scent, Fragonard. And in my fantasy life, I'd wear it so much that I'd have to travel to Paris a few times to replenish it!

In actuality, when I'm working I don't wear fragrance that much, but I really like it! I tend to like light floral, powdery scents that aren't terribly sweet. It presents a problem in the winter, as I feel as though I want something cozy.

I wear Juicy Couture (the original, which can be hard to find) in the cooler months. When I first started wearing it, I think when the originators still owned the company, the bottles were amazing! In fact, when I was visiting Germany, I saw that the factory that made the bottles was there in (East) Germany. It was a fun surprise!

CK One. It has been my scent since college, and it still feels like me. I like the "cleanliness" of the smell.

I had a gay friend who wore it, and I loved that we could both wear the same scent. Granted, once I started wearing it, he switched to something different.

I alternate between two scents from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab: Morocco and Aureus. Aureus is my go-to for daytime and summer; it's a woody, earthy, amber-based scent. Morocco, which I prefer in the winter and for evenings, is a spicy-musky sandalwood blend. I'd be happy wearing either one exclusively, but being able to switch up between the two is even better.

I wear Kenzo Flower daily, and have for twenty years.

La Belle D: Chanel Coromandel: Have never heard of this. Have you smelled Chanel Beige anyone?
LisaP: Well sometimes you think or are reminded of something negative or yuccy, and that's perfectly OK to share that.

Angie: Kenzo flower? Wow never heard of this before, it's nice you have a signature scent~

Jenni NZ: Versace Bright Crystal is lovely~ It has such a gorgeous bottle too~

I am first attracted to the lovely bottles, which ones are amazing?

Versace Bright Crystal is amazing, I also think Jean Paul Gaultier is, the lovely feminine form, also I think J'Adore by Dior's bottle is astounding.

What is the most gorgeous perfume bottle you've ever seen?

Thanks, Voilettt. It is signature. People recognize me by the way I smell - which I quite enjoy because scents are nostalgic and memorable.

Nice thread.

Scents are big trigger for many, but there are ways of framing negative experiences that doesn't disparage others' choices.
Anyways
Mine would be the long discontinued Le Feu d'Issey Miyake. NOT the light version, which was more popular but very different. It worked fantastically with my body chemistry. I still have a few bottles, and have learned not to waste it on a first date, ha!
The book Perfumes, The Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez gave it 5 stars, one of the rare highest rating.

Then I found Bulgari Omni, which was kinda similar, but not really. But that also got discontinued.

I'm trying all sorts of stuff now, and thanks to Kari got some leads on some more oddball scents that may work on me.

Interesting to hear what others would choose.

I do love the bottles and they're part of the appeal, for me. My first perfume, aged 17, was Charlie, which had such great advertising for young 1970s women! I've liked Amor Amor and Givenchy's Totally Irresistible for their red bottles. And La Petite Robe Noire for its name, bottle, advertising campaign using Nancy Sinatra singing "These Boots are made for Walking". As well as its scent, which I liked! It would probably be my choice for a year.
Chris, that is a limitation of Scentmap.com, that it doesn't seem to have all the perfumes. It did help me find Lolita Lempicka to try after La Petite Robe Noire, and I've also used Fragrantica as users on there sometimes say what a scent reminds them of.

Ralph Lauren Romance

Clinique's Aromatic Elixir. I love the scent, and it doesn't change on me after I wear it. I consider it a masterpiece of perfumery.

I am loving this thread. I don't wear any fragrance to work as I work with patients and students. When I am not working: Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb.

Jenni: I remember The Charlie fragrance! I wore Jean Nate, Coty Mugeis de Bois, Loves Lemon and then Avon Sweet Honesty as a teen.
As a young adult: Paco Robanne Calandre, Elizabeth Arden Private Collection, Duende for a little while, then Anais Anais Noa.

I think I will be wearing Flowerbomb for a while. It is a floral I haven't tired of yet.

My mom always wore Evening in Paris.
Blue bottle-Not sure where she bought it-but it seemed so chic to me as a child!

I am wishing I could remember what everyone said here and write you all back personally, I am loving hearing everyone's choice. I only found one vote for Ralph Lauren, surprising because their scents are awesome! Mainelady I think it was. I love RL Romance~ as I love RL clothes, totally my style.
Madelaine: omg I remember Charlie, and matter of fact, I think I flagged so many women down, asking them "OMG what are you wearing you smell so good"? It was always Charlie. lol
JenniNZ: I love Givenchy irrisistable~ It's fab, the bottle is too~
Paco Rabanne was the first perfume I ever bought and loved. It was in Paris in the 70's.
Such memories fragrance inspires!
So what do you think is the most beautiful bottle?
I love this one: https://www.dsw.com/en/us/prod...../371974?cm
My fav of course. I also love this bottle: https://www.marcjacobs.com/dai.....bMtdgCFUnR=

I had to come back to this post. Before I started perusing YLF, I had been heavily invested in hunting for perfumes that reminded me of favorite scent memories. Topping my list was the sweet tobacco scent I recalled wafting from my uncles pipe while we sat around and talked after family gatherings. I had read perfume blogs, learned about scents and done my best to find something. I ended up with a large collection of lovely scents which reminded me of all sorts of things: fresh cut grass, lilacs and honeysuckle in the spring, roses, forests and cut wood, fresh air after it rains/ozone, tea, lemons, vanilla and Honey. I noticed there was a certain group of scents I preferred over the others. I think these would be the amber/ oriental/ woody scents. Maybe they would also be the leather and tobacco scents. In any case, I ended up giving a lot of perfume away. I had samples which I gave to friends, and a fair number of bottles which I knew I would never love enough to use up. I kept only my favorites.

1. Chanel Sycomore - one of the exclusif’s, it is a magic combination of Vetiver and tobacco notes. This for me is almost the holy grail tobacco scent. It reminds me of my uncle and makes me happy. The Tom Ford tobacco scents were lovely, but DH found them too cloying, and they were not the same scent as my uncles sweet tobacco. I wear it for evenings out, special occasions, and whenever I need a boost in my mood. My uncle made me laugh!

2. Bottega Veneta- this is my current signature scent. I am disappointed that they discontinued the body crime because it smelled wonderful and the lotion isn’t as nice. I miss it. I am not sure if I will want to use this as a perfume only. I have used it for the past 6-7 years.

3. Prada - L’eau Ambree and Infusion D’Iris. These may seem very different from each other, and in fact they are. The Iris perfume came out first, and I used it exclusively for almost three years until the L’eau Ambree was introduced. Then I alternated between them, wearing the Iris in the warmer seasons and the L’eau Ambree in the cooler seasons.

5. Estée Lauder Sensuous - I added this along with the Prada’s. It’s a bit cleaner, and there is no Patchouli. Sometimes I am not in the mood for patchouli, so the L’eau Ambree would get replaced with the Sensuous.

So, these are the current perfumes in my collection. I use all 5 of them now. If I could only pick one, it would be Bottega Veneta, and if I could pick two I would add the Iris. Next the Sycomore.

Picking perfume is tricky. Not only do you have to love the scent yourself, but the scent has to work well with your body chemistry. I’m not sure how others tell if they have picked a perfume well. Once I think I have a good one, I have DH check it, and also DD. If they are okay, I need to check a more public audience. I know I have a successful scent when the people around me start to say that they smell something nice but aren’t immediately able to identify that it’s me. That reaction guarantees a winner in my collection every time.

As I read everyone’s answers to your question, I saw some perfumes that I might want to try. When I looked them up on Fragrantica.net and looked at the similar scents people might also like, I always found one or more of my current 5 favorites in the Fragrantica list. Two perfumes turn up in every single Fragrantica list of similar perfumes: Shalimar and Narciso Rodriguez. Another one that was in all but one was Tom Ford Black Orchid. The only one of these I have smelled is Shalimar. My Aunt wore Shalimar and Opium. I wonder if I should give Shalimar a try?

Staysfit, I hope you do! Shalimar can be so lovely, and the EDT, EDP, and parfum bring out different notes.
I should love Shalimar because the notes are right up my alley, but I’ve tested it many times and it’s terrible on my skin (very bitter.) Mitsouko is my favorite Guerlain.

Fun threat, Violett!
Srah, your description of your favorite has intrigued me; I need to track it down and smell it.
Xtabay, I loved Clinique's Aromatic Elixir; it was my favorite for some years.
La Belle D, my pick is close to yours: Tom Ford Oud Wood. I haven't tried Oud Tobacco.
K2, I wore Black Orchid (went through a whole bottle of it, unusual for me), before I finally convinced myself to buy Oud Wood.
Staysfit, I have been drawn to several of your choices. I think we have similar taste in scents.
If I could have a second pick, it would be Hermes Rhubarbe Ecarlate; I just bought it for my birthday last summer, to be my summer scent. I can wear Oud Wood year round, though, as it feels like a skin scent to me.
As to bottles, I will say I love the bright ruby color of the Hermes Rhubarbe Ecarlate. I tend to favor the simple beauty of rectangular bottles overall.

My favorite bottle is still Lanvin's "My Sin." It's the one my mom kept on her dresser. The name intrigued me, as well as the design of the bottle. It had a mystery about it, I guess you could say.

I'm pretty boring. I only wear one 99% of the time. Hanae Mori Butterfly. I get the rollerballs from Nordstrom Rack and fear the day they no longer carry them. I don't care for overpowering scents and it's very subtle, but I enjoy the little whiff I get in the morning. It smells like vanilla, but has none in it. I picked it out years ago at Nordstrom and never stopped wearing it except for a brief dalliance with l'eau d'Issey Miyake
I have a few others DH has given me, and I'll wear them a little at a time until they are gone, but I rarely branch out much.
I had a brief fling with Chanel No 5 after college, but then my boyfriend's mother wore it and I gave it up.

Light Blue by D&G is the only scent I wear. I am sensitive to fragrance of all kinds and this scent was recommended to be one that is "wearable". I've worn it exclusively for more than 7+ years and always get positive comments.

staysfit: all the scents you mention are so interesting and unique! Love them! Bottega Veneta? Fab
firecracker: Hermes Rhubarb and the lovely red bottle, that sounds amazing! I have worn Hermes Jour de Hermes, and it's really nice and different.
Xtabay: wow! Lanvin "My Sin" my grandmother wore this,
Another beautiful bottle is Salvatore Dali. https://www.overstock.com/Heal.....lette-Spra= It's gorgeous. I bought this scent, when my husband and I visited the Dali museaum in Paris.
Some of the more obscure and wonderful scents you can't find in department store like Macys, online probably.
My SIL once smelled so wonderful, I inquired, and she was wearing some fragrance by "Creed". Oh it was divine! I'm surprised no one mentioned this!
Fragonard, is amazing too, made from 7000 roses, was on a Rick Steves Travel show once.

Creed Zeste Mardine Pamplemousse was my summer fragrance for quite a few years
https://www.creedboutique.com/.....ousse.html

Something subtle that would not risk to make me sick in the long run. I'm thinking 4711 Eau de Cologne, or Acqua 3 Rosa by L'Erbolario.

Firecracker, I’m tempted to try the Tom Ford Oud Wood. It sounds wonderful. I’m also curious about the Hermes. I have loved both Un Jardin Sur La Nil, and Kelly Caleche.

I have two in major rotation at this point, the Frederic Malle perfumes L'Eau d'Hiver and Dans Tes Bras. And I have Hermes Eau des Merveilles (and a couple of its derivates) that come out occasionally.

I adore Bulgari mon Jasmine Noir

I have a Diptyque roll-on that I bought in the spring and love. It’s subtle, and has a natural floral scent.

I wire Hermes Caleche for years. I still like it but want to try some new things. When I occasionally do some department store tryons I can get overwhelmed.
I’d like to sample Bottega Veneta and Oud Wood. The BV is not available her do would have to order a sample ; maybe the other, too.
