I finally stopped being a wuss and bought some makeup. I wanted to look nice for my first day of work (which went well, btw).

I'm having second thoughts about the lipstick though. No pictures but It didn't really go on smoothly in the store. I couldn't tell if that was due to the fact that I was using one of those little disposable sponge-like thingies to apply it (not a makeup sponge, but like a sponge on a stick). The reviews say it is moisturizing though, so I trusted them. Only makeup experts write reviews right? I liked the price and the fact that it is natural though. I got this in Parfait:

I'm not even sure about the color. Once I got home and saw it in normal light, as opposed to gaudy Sephora light, it looked very brown. I think I was looking for my lip color, but a teensy bit brighter. Can I return it if it is unused, even though I unwrapped it?

I also got this. I don't know why Sephora says it is a liquid foundation because it isn't. It's a tinted moisturizer.

That seems to be working out. I don't know if I got the right color. (Incognito) I'm so hopelessly bad at this. It's sheer enough that it blends into my skin though, so it's not a disaster in any case.

I decided to forgo cheek color for now. For some reason makeup shopping stresses me out more than other types of shopping, perhaps because I am so clueless. But I could really use it. I am looking very pale and drawn these days

I also got turquoise nail polish. I haven't worn nail polish in years but it was too tempting!

Oh fun Maya!!! The tell tale way to tell if your tinted moisterizer is right...look in the mirror, does your skin look more even and refined? You should feel better about the way you look:)

It does Taylor. It just looks so different from my skin and takes a lot of blending, but once it is blended it looks good. I guess it's unreasonable to expect a perfect match. Still, I can't help but wonder if I should have tried the color for golden undertones instead of olive.

Hmmm...so tricky I know. Undertones...Olive, Ashy ,Creamy,Pink, and every spectrum thereof in these undertones. Confusing to me too:)

When you are ready for cheeks, pinch them, then look at the color. That will be the color to match with a powder or cream based blush. If you are afraid of blushes, try bronzers, they will add a light shimmer to the cheek area. For lips if you want a natural look, look at tinted glosses. The color won't be as harsh as lipsticks are.

Oh Maya, fun!! If the lipstick doesn't seem right, definitely return it! As well as the foundation. Try to look at it in natural light if you can. It can be so hard to match the shades. At least this formulation is pretty light. Tarte is a great brand.

Also, the Parfait looks like a really pretty color. It sounds like maybe your lips make it look slightly different. My best friend's lips make lip colors look brown pretty easily, not sure why. She has very different coloring from you but darker lips.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, I highly recommend a stop at a Bobbi Brown counter. Bobbi Brown does the "enhanced natural" look so well.

Really good point. My sister in law gets totally overwhelmed by makeup and Bobbi really got her figured out well. (I made that sound like Bobbi herself...unfortunately not what I meant.)

Make-up intimidates me too! I have to also chime in that I also like Bobbi Brown cosmetics.

I would back up the suggestion that you visit a Bobbi Brown make up counter - don't feel like you are pressured to buy anything, I always want to have a look at the make up once I am outside and how well it lasts, so I very rarely buy anything immediately after trying and normally come back the next day.

I just want to add about lips and choosing colors. For me, my lips have pink in them, so any lipsticks with a pinkish base get really picked up and look like clown lips on me. If you are finding lipstick colors look "off" on you, it's your base lip color that affecting the pigments.

I've been using Stila's convertible lip and cheek color for blush and I love how it can add a very sheer natural color to your cheeks. I can't recall which color I bought but you need just a little bit and it lasts a LONG time. Depending on my mood I use either this or Everyday Minerals' bronzer everyday.

Maya, I'm seconding the suggestion to try a pink lipgloss, too.

The color is less intense so it's easier to make it not look crazy. I have a red lipgloss that looks cute (with the right clothes) when my coloring realy wouldn't look good with a true red lipstick (unless it was more blueish red, which isn't really red, you know?)

The whole reason I'm seeking out lipstick is because I hate wearing gloss. I don't want shiny or wet looking lips.

I will try both of those whenever I am next near a MAC counter Angie.
