I want Michelle Obama's dress

I want Michelle Obama's dress for my fantasy life / unlikely family reunion in Jamaica at Christmas... Would it be ridiculous to go get one?

Also, I'm thinking of getting rid of my red gingham sleeveless sundress (of similar shape, but fuller skirt), because it ties in the back. I'm thinking that's too little girl... thoughts/opinions?

Well, that dress is gorgeous! I do not think it is such a fantasy life piece, I mean a pretty floral summer dress could be worn in many situations.
It is tough to say about the red dress without seeing it on, but from your description I tend to agree with you.

Can you modify the tie from the dress you already have meaning remove the tie altogether. And the FLOTUs dress is pretty awesome.

I agree, I am kind of over the whole "tie-in-the-back" thing. Unless you can cut those and just use a regular belt.

Hadn't thought about an alteration. I don't think snipping the ties off would be enough - I think it would also have to be taken in then. On the other hand, I'm trying out a tailor. If the work is good on the first item... he could have an assured stream of income. I go to pick up the trial item tomorrow.

In the meantime I've been browsing ModCloth, Lafayette 148 (sp?)(boy they're a lot more expensive than I thought), ASOS. I went to look at Mary Kantztrou (sp?) for Michelle's exact dress. No longer available in that print and over $1000K - dang, that's a first class ticket to the island! Sadly, I don't think one's wardrobe should be more expensive than one's plane ticket. Hahaha!

Lucky MIchelle, flying on airforce one. Means she gets a bigger dress budget... hehe.

When I saw your thread title, I thought "I always want Michelle Obama's dress!" And this one is certainly no exception! (And how adorably color-coordinated is she with her hubs?)

I like the idea of snip-and-belt for the dress you have!

Michelle does American Lady so extremely well. I mean, she just nails pretty but not precious. If you ever wanted to know how to dress to put people at ease, while being prepared to tackle anything, and still look nice - Michelle is it.

I'm a big fan of navy and grass green with white. I think the cut of this dress is quite flattering especially the cap sleeve that works to emphasize her narrow waistline.
I agree Rachy a dress with a bow can feel a little juvenile. This one is feminine and all grown up.

Could you belt over the tie on the gingham dress? I do that sometimes with a polkadot tie back dress. It's not perfect, but I feel like it ups the cool factor enough that I don't mind a little bow hanging out under the belt.

If you wanted to try at home to take in the dress as well, this is what I would do...

1. snip
2. flip dress inside out and pin to the size you want to tailor (symmetrically on both sides, of course); you probably don't have to open up the dress unless you're tailoring in quite a bit. I probably sometimes leave up to 1/2 cm unopened and tucked.
3. sew up straight; then reinforce
4. flip dress right side out and hopefully you'll get the tailoring done and the ties gone too!
