I think this is my raincoat... but of course there is an issue...

The photographs really don't do this one justice... it is a color I can only describe as "old copper penny" - not a shiny new penny, but one that has been in circulation, with the pictures practically rubbed off. And it drapes so nicely that for once I'm okay with sizing up for layers; it just looks current and slouchy to me without the big layers under, rather than too big. It is long enough to cover my thighs, but not too long. Two inside pockets for travel, throat latch, zipper as well as buttons, breathable. By Italian brand Sealup - mentioned here in an article about "London's young, trend-obsessed men" and their raincoats. Super light, super packable, yet still looks spendy. DH loves it, which is weird because he's mostly indifferent to the coat search.

The two downsides are that the belt doesn't keep shape (which I don't really care about too much) and that there is one epaulette missing! I'm going to call Yoox and ask, but since this was the last one I highly doubt there are any spare epaulettes.

What would you do? The other epaulette is removable, but I like the structure it provides. Have tried to find the brand on sale elsewhere and failed miserably.

Ooooooo, I LOVE the drape. I think you should keep it and make up a story about losing one epaulet in battle. Alternately it looks kind of like an asymmetrical custom detail, lol! I like it.

Or you could probably make or get made your own epaulettes pretty easily.

Ummm... I would do what IK says. I do think though that the arms are a little too wide and long for you. Are you ok with it?

Keep it. Take off the other epaulette and add a little line of studs.

The sleeve length does look long - you could have an epaulet made.

So Yoox said that any missing pieces they find are tossed, so they would definitely not have it. Most likely it was damaged when it was shipped from the manufacturer, too, since the Yoox product photo also seems to have only one epaulette. They said they would reimburse the cost if I were to have a tailor make me another epaulette, but IDK how I could ever find the same fabric.

Zap, I actually prefer the long arms, as it really irritates me when my sleeves are longer than the coat and get wet (had this problem with my black trench). I wouldn't like the width in a wool coat, but for something like this where I might need to layer a bulky item under, it is functional.

Would it look bad without any epaulettes? Or would it look stupid with epaulettes in a not-quite matching or even contrasting color (black?)?

I love the colour and the shape on you. It is a very luxe looking trench. Removing the epaulette would not bother me personally.

Bummer about the epaulette, because otherwise it is a fab jacket. Here's a thought: how long is the belt? Is there any possibility you could steal a couple of inches from it to make a new epaulette? Or maybe from the seam allowance?

ETA: although I think it would be fine if you removed the epaulette too. In fact, I find they seem to interfere annoyingly with my handbag straps a lot anyway...

Could you use a bit of the belt to make a new set of matching epaullettes?

I have a black trench, but the self tie is kind of 'meh'. I use a wide stretchy belts with a leather and buckle front instead, and it gives me a 50's vibe.

Maybe you can find a leather and metal belt you like better, to give it a Rae twist?

Here is what the sleeves look like shortened enough to cannibalize for another epaulette. Plus close-up of the sleeve. Hm, I think I still prefer the super long sleeves so that my wrists stay covered when I move my arms.

Diana and Runcarla, you have got me thinking... I don't want to shorten the belt any, but maybe I can steal from the *middle* section of the belt? That would give sort of a contrast fabric/leather in the back - does that make sense?

*update - just got the official email from Yoox, and apparently a price adjustment might also be in the cards.

I prefer super long sleeves too! (I think we may be in the minority here though, since every time I have a WIW with something with slightly too long sleeves, someone tells me to get them shortened, LOL.)

Re: the belt, do you mean remove the middle section and replace it with contrasting material? I think that might be a cool look, and it might help the structural integrity of the belt too.

I think the sleeves are too long as is (beyond luxurious and just ill-fitting), but they don't look fab shortened either. I love the epaulette! Can you believe they only sent you one!! I vote return.

Is there any of the same fabric used in the pockets? Quite often one side of a pocket is the same fabric as the coat. you could canibalise that fairly easily and replace the inner pocket with another fabric.

I think the pinned length makes the sleeves look wider. I guess the longer length helps in that department.

Angie, how about if I move the buttons on the sleeve tabs so that they are not so wide? That would help keep rain out, too. I think I am willing to compromise a bit on some things because I am being demanding about function right now. I can't stand when my shirt sleeves ride up, so I wear those long, and then the coat sleeves have to be even longer to cover them...

I love it in #3, but in the other photos it seems too big rather than just oversized/drapey. I don't mind the long sleeves at all though - with your UWP thing, you could probably open up the seam an inch and have some awesome thumb holes. As for the epaulette - I'd keep the single and put a leather strap diagonally across the other shoulder a la Claire's battle theme!

You've gotten great advice already on having another epaulette fashioned from the belt fabric or removing the remaining epaulette. I'm afraid I must confess that the fit of the sleeves is bothering me. I find them too long and too wide - like the sleeves alone are a size too big, you know? For me, that would be a deal breaker.

If you think you can doctor the sleeves - have a go. It's a hassle on a fully lined garment though - assuming this is a fully lined garment!

FWIW, Rae, fit is still important even when we bend the so called fit rules to look "cool", or "fashion forward" or "edgy" or "very practical". If you would like to pursue a career as a Fashion Professional, you also have to look like you know what good fit means - even when you wear oversized clothing and push conventional fit boundaries. Your style is part of your advertisement ALL THE TIME. I am saying this out of love and not as a Ms. Know It All. I hope that what I am saying makes sense and that it does not come across as negative and spoiling your fun. As always, take my opinion for what it is worth to you. I am not the final word on anything. We are just sharing caring thoughts here.

I have to say that all the negative comments make me really, really sad. This was not even a K/R post!

I felt so great about this one, and DH still does, and he's mad at me for second-guessing... The list of requirements has just grown and grown and grown as I have tried more coats on, and this checked all the boxes:
- Breathable! Above all else! NO poly linings.
- Very LIGHT and packable
- TOO big (for layering) but doesn't LOOK too big
- Water-resistant
- A flattering non-black color
- equipped with inner pockets for passport
- LONG enough to keep the thighs dry
- long enough through waist so that belt doesn't sit too high when layered
- Agreeable to DH (since we'd always travel together)
- Long enough in sleeves to keep wrists dry
- Within my budget

Now the sleeves are too wide. Pardon my acronyms, but geez, FML. I can move in the sleeve tabs, or even slim them - is that not good enough? When in the world is it okay to compromise a little? I know we are all about PPP, but for gear? I'm near tears here...

Sorry to rant... I just... feel so angry! Obviously not at you all, but at my body for needing to breathe, at the fashion industry for not providing what I want, at my pocketbook for not being able to go out and have something custom-made...
