I feel your pain. So many options. Contrary to popular belief, some in the NW do use an umbrella, and I still carry one! But I finally broke down and purchased some real raincoats over the last few years as I commute by bus every day and need to be a bit more practical.
Gortex is the best I've found for both waterproof and breathable material, and is the highest cost. Most styles are pretty gear focused, but a few make some slightly more "trench-coat" looking ones. I'd rather wear a beautiful. classic trench style, but they still get wet so Ive had to make some compromise.
You might check out Eddie Bauer, I have their popular "girl on the go" trench (it has some plum colors) & I find it keeps me dry (sorry the finds dont seem to work right now) Columbia, Marmot, Rei & and Helly Hansen all have some "commuter" styles that fit a bit better in the city than on the trails.
