Here’s my best drowned rat impression. Even DS couldn’t make me smile or get good photos when I’m this wet & cold!

I’d been looking forward to hunting down an in-between coat like one of these, but now realize that a raincoat of some sort (style tbd) takes precedence.

I’m off to peruse today’s post carefully.

Hm. I’m not sure what to do with that.
The one I dumped before we came here was. It was a stone/putty colored Woolrich parka style, and the thing must’ve been made of rubber. It absolutely did not breathe! Whenever I wore it, I emerged as wet with sweat as I would’ve been out in the rain. I am not sorry I left it.
I’m having second thoughts though, about the classic London Fog Trenchcoat my mother gave me years ago. I hadn’t worn it, mostly because they aren’t needed in Florida, but also at least partially because it was coral color. I appreciate the effort, and I do like being a bright blip on a dreary day, but coral just isn’t me. Still, I could’ve used something today.
There is a bright blue Vaud wind-breaker/rain jacket in the cellar that I should try on. If it fits, I’ll be happy, but I doubt it will.

I’ve just been perusing websites since making the original post. I am so unenthusiastic about what’s out there!

Sea salt ,and I know that you like Whitestuff ,have some jolly offerings in the rainwear department or there is always an umbrella while you wait to find what you want.

Be aware that those touted as raincoats often make noise as you move, sort of a crackle. It is a deal breaker for me. Try the German version of REI or Eddie Bauer. An umbrella held at the wrong angle can dump water down your back and soak your water-resistant coat. Don’t ask how I know this.
You might consider one of those plastic stadium or camping ponchos for real rain. It may allow for some air circulation.

I feel your pain. So many options. Contrary to popular belief, some in the NW do use an umbrella, and I still carry one! But I finally broke down and purchased some real raincoats over the last few years as I commute by bus every day and need to be a bit more practical.

Gortex is the best I've found for both waterproof and breathable material, and is the highest cost. Most styles are pretty gear focused, but a few make some slightly more "trench-coat" looking ones. I'd rather wear a beautiful. classic trench style, but they still get wet so Ive had to make some compromise.

You might check out Eddie Bauer, I have their popular "girl on the go" trench (it has some plum colors) & I find it keeps me dry (sorry the finds dont seem to work right now) Columbia, Marmot, Rei & and Helly Hansen all have some "commuter" styles that fit a bit better in the city than on the trails.

I have one of these Patagonia coats. It is really waterproof and the hood is very well designed. The liner isn’t super warm, unfortunately. I took it to Turkey and needed to layer everything I had under it. They used to have a similar coat with a down liner.

Joy mentions an important point: some coats are noisy. I returned one to Eddie Bauer for that reason.

And I hear you on those coats that don't breathe. Just found out this weekend that my lightweight pack-away mac from Joules (which is advertised as "breathable") doesn't breathe at all. I hate that feeling, and won't wear it again.

I could really use a new lighter weight, waterproof, breathable coat that doesn't make any noise now too:-)

I was also going to suggest Seasalt (and am going to look through their lightweight raincoat options in a sec myself), because I got a warm raincoat from them last year, and am thrilled with it. It really is waterproof, an excellent longer length, and very cosy (I actually wore it all Winter long with appropriate layers underneath and was never cold). It's the Janelle.

My last two coats have been Marmot and have lasted about 8 years each with regular wear. Definitely gear but I like the styling.

My red Nautica though not waterproof is water resistant enough for most rainy days short of torrential. It came with a hoody, which I removed, since I hate hoods on coats. (Just me).

I might be in the market too so am following. I am annoyed by raincoats without hoods though- I guess I'm the opposite of Runcarla on this one! I don't want to carry an umbrella if I'm wearing a rain coat.

Seconding JAileen's recommendation (and not for the first time) for the Patagonia Vosque. I have two! Personally I find it plenty warm (fine for traipsing around both Amsterdam and Montreal in December). And without the liner it's good for spring and fall. I love the two-way zipper: good leg coverage, but won't break your stride.

You people are angels! I tucked my over-chilled self under the covers right after posting this gripe, just picked up the phone for the first time today, and just look at all the wonderful suggestions! Favorite brands I didn’t know made this kind of thing, cheerful colors, shapes much more attractive to me than the usual, funny stories hinted at....thank you so much!

I won’t have time to really dig into this until this evening. I’ll respond to each post individually then. I’m looking forward to it!

Yes to gear(ish) raincoats, if you really want/need to protect yourself from the weather....for light drizzle on colder days, boiled wool works, and can be layered under a light gear raincoat...
also, i haven't tried this, but a number of the people i work with, are using these reverse umbrellas and claim that they really work....i'm thinking of getting one...

Another vote for gearish rain jackets. I have a Patagonia one that is at least 8 years old, it’s not breathable but keeps me dry in a downpour.

For lighter rain or drizzle, I like my waxed cotton jacket. It breathes, isn’t noisy, and keeps me dry.

Check out Junge—a Danish brand. I own 3 of their jackets/coats which have proven to be indestructible: a red, water-resistant cotton trench for light showers; a quilted, water-resistant jacket for colder, wet days; and a hooded, waterproof coat with a lining for those miserable, snowy/drenching rain days in November-January. The waterproof coat also functions nicely as a cold weather coat, worn over a sweater, in below freezing Toronto temps when I visit my son.

Gaylene - Ohh!! Why haven't I heard of Junge before!! They have some gorgeous coats!!

I also just remembered Lighthouse, I've never ordered something from them so can't vouch for quality etc., but they have some nice (waterproof) options and a similar vibe to Seasalt, but with different colourways, which is fun.
