But....I'm currently about 10 lbs overweight from a winter of bad habits. I'm getting back on track though.
The R13 shredded jeans sold out in the size 30 while I was in Canada. That is the size that would have fit me now. I can get the size 29, but it probably wouldn't fit right now. It is pretty much sold out across most websites. I haven't been able to find an equivalent in another brand.
What do you think.

Well, on the plus side...you will probably be doing a lot of hiking soon, and the pounds will come off.

On the minus side, with the whole movement to wear our clothes a bit looser, you might prefer a looser fit anyway.

I'm not disciplined enough to make those kind of purchases. I'd either lose the weight first or wait to find the size that fit me now. Ten years ago, I probably would have bought them but my metabolism is not what it once was.

It took me almost a year to lose ten pounds, so I personally would be somewhat nervous about buying them. Do you have a history of losing weight easily?

On the other hand, if the 29s are almost sold out, and you end up buying them and not wearing them, perhaps you could sell them on ebay?

What is the return window? Can you give yourself a deadline, if they do not fit by then they go back?

How badly do you want the jeans? Are there other shredded jeans? I'd be extremely nervous buying a pair of pants that didn't fit. It might just be me, because historically I've had difficulty changing my body shape at all. It just seems to want to do its own thing.

But if you've been down this path before, and you're confident the weight will come off within a few months (isn't something like 2 lbs per month the max for healthy weight loss?), and those jeans are the perfect shredded jeans that you've been waiting for all your life, then...maybe.

Every time I've bought something too small, I've regretted it. Considering the fluid fit trend, I'm inclined to say wait.

Weight loss is getting harder for me these days. I know I'm a few years older than you, but I think in our 40s it's wise to be conservative about weight loss estimates.

If you are determined to lose the 10 lbs again, I would go ahead and order the 29 (if you are fairly certain that they will fit well with 10 lbs less).
Hang them in the front of the closet and use them as inspiration.

I wouldn't do it. I have enough guilt and self-loathing as it is, without an expensive pair of too-small jeans taunting me every time I open my closet! LOL

I personally would not take the chance as I find that when I lose weight it doesn't necessarily come off in the places I expect it to. (This may be an age-related thing.) But… you are younger than me and know how your own body behaves in these situations.

I wouldn't do it. There are always other new things. By the time they have a fluid fit, you may have moved on. A couple of times I've had a twinge of regret not buying something I love in a size I'm moving toward, but it's brief and other things come along .

Do not buy the size 29. Not one of my clients has had success with this strategy. And when the items DO eventually fit after weight loss, their style preferences have changed. And premium denim sizes are all over the place as it is.

I think it depends on what will happen if you turn out not to be able to wear them. Can you return them? Sell them for the same as you paid? If these are easy options for you to take advantage of, then there's no harm in buying them, because you won't be out any money in the end.

Do you know for sure that you have the correct size? A lot of people have been finding that the premium denim is running smaller, and they are having to wear larger sizes, even in brands that are very familiar to them.

Although I can see how this stragegy might motivate some women, for me this would just cause unending frustrating and self-loathing. If I were you I would really try to hold off. Do what you want to do for your body, if anything, and occasionally check to see if a 30 pops back in. In a while, you will either be 10 lbs lighter and ready for the 29s, or have moved onto something else.

I routinely have my R13 taken in up top because I have weird no-hips. Also because R13 sizing is all over the map, and I can wear anywhere from a 27 to a 29 depending on how tight I want it and how much spandex is in it. But I would not do it at this price point, and not if I knew they would hang in the closet mocking me..

Ok, thanks everyone.
I'm kicking myself for not ordering the 30's. But it wasn't till I went to Canada and realized that jeans are a staple for me now that I felt like I should order them.
I have one pair of blue and one grey True Religion Camerons boyfriend jeans, one pair blue True Religion Brianna's. That should last me for a bit.
If anyone sees a really hectically distressed boyfriend jean please let me know.

To be perverse, I have done this kind of thing and had it work for me, because I almost always gain weight in the winter and lose it by summer. But I've only bought things that were either a) returnable after a long wait, or b) on serious clearance anyway, so that I wouldn't regret the money spent if they didn't work out. I wouldn't do it with a full price item that I couldn't recoup the cost from.

I'm parting with a bunch of stuff I bought for the two months I managed to be at my skinniest - big mistake. I'd buy for the body you average. Winter weight affects me too.

Una, I hear you. There is an adorable dress in my closet I must have bought right after I ran my last half-marathon because I swear it fit then but is too tight now. I'll hang onto it just in case, but it's in the back of the dress section so it doesn't make me feel bad every time I see it.

Did you gain weight last winter and lose it without much trouble? If so, then I think you should get them. Were you able to do it in the past? How long ago, and how much trouble was it? You'll know in your mind how doable this really is for you. As time goes on it is a lot harder to lose weight. Much harder. I've been trying to lose the same 10 pounds for a couple years!

It's so interesting that you say you just realized that jeans are a staple of yours. I'm not sure why -- SO obvious -- but I have just realized/accepted that jeans are a staple of mine as well, and I've done a real assessment/clean-out of my denim wardrobe. I'm ditching a coupe of older pairs and have just ordered another pair in new silhouette. It's just not worth it to me to buy another pair of work pants when I wear jeans every day 80% of the time.

Yeah. I don't buy on the tight side anymore either. I think it karma-cly (yup, completely made up word) dooms me to weight gain. Like telling anyone when I've lost 5 lbs. The next day I'm practically guaranteed to be up 2 lbs.

It doesn't always happen when my weight fluctuates, but I have been known to lose weight from the top down and gain from the bottom up. And then it takes a bit of time to redistribute. I also tend to buy more at my lowest weights, in part because I am more proportional and more stuff fits, but also because I feel better about myself then.

Especially for spendy items, I think it is best to buy for the size you are. By the time you have reached the smaller size (if ever), your taste or your proportions may have changed.

What I like about the R13's is that they were patched and didn't look so contrived. I mean square shaped distressing?
I like the Current/Elliott's that Viva found best so far.

Being unable to maintain constant weight is so difficult since the fit of the clothes is so important. I've been existing on steroids for the past five years and I no longer can maintain constant weight. I hate it. Half of my clothes don't fit right at any given time... I guess I need to come to terms with the idea I'll never look as I used to anymore, but even though I slowly am trying to, I'm still in denial... Every time I lose some, I go and buy some nice things that I can't wear not long after the purchase... It makes it really hard to invest in quality items as it's just waste of money...

If your weight gain is definitely temporary, though, and you know you can lose it, I wouldn't go for a bigger size, if I were you. I'd say it's even better to refrain from shopping until you're back in shape.
