I just had a fashion lightbulb moment about black

I was just scrolling through bloglovin and I came across a blogger who wears just colorful, crazy wonderfulness. I love looking st these colorful outfits but I found myself really loving the ones that were still super colorful but had black in them as well. I adore color but I am always drawn to black. And I suddenly realized that for me an element of black in an outfit grounds it, and defines it . Like a picture frame. It is like I need something to hold on to visually , some sort of boundary ..

Totally random thoughts but I feel like wow! I suddenly get it !

Interesting! I sometimes feel that way about black shoes when I am wearing a print - with what is still dark in my hair and eyebrows bookends (or anchors or frames) the dress and stop me from floating away.

One of my aha moments re: black occurred even as I have reduced amount of black in items worn near my face.
I realized that if there were still s lot of " skin" showing, black could still work for me. I don't wear much sleeveless, or that would be a good example.
But, a nice black T- shirt with jeans and black sneaks or loafers is a good look-- more polished than bright colors in some cases.
Dressy items with wide boatnecks or cold shoulder can work.

I totally get this. I don't like wearing head-to-toe color. I need color to be grounded with neutral in my outfits, and I prefer that neutral to be black. I've always been that way!

My aha moment on wearing black came when Angie once said something about texture in relation to black. I like my black items to have some texture.

I think with your colouring, this is the bookending that is sometimes talked about. I can see that too.

For me black is great in spring and summer with skin, but too much of it is draining especially in winter. I am similar to unfrumped.

Great comment, and I agree that it's so wonderful when those aha moments occur! I am like Janet I think, I like outfits grounded in neutrals, but grey and tan work for me as well as black.

Agreeing with Sally that it's probably because of your colouring. Black will book-end beautifully with your dark hair.
Don't you just love those light -bulb moments?

I love an ah-ha moment! I feel like this too, I love color but it has to be with a neutral for me or it is too intense. I think this is true in home decor too, love colors but I have to have someplace for the eye to rest.

Makes sense! I need my colors to be grounded in neutral although it doesn't necessarily have to be black - grey or white will also do.

Decorators say this too -- a few black accents ground a room.

In fashion it is especially true for those with dark hair. I think it may be why Angie craves light/ white. That neutral does the same for those with light hair.

Ditto everything Janet just said. I also feel the urge to ground colors with at least one neutral garment... often black (as I have dark hair).

I echo 100% what Suz and Sally said. Your light bulb moment makes sense, Momo. Like Janet and Diana, adding black to your outfits works flawlessly well with your complexions - and that's why you're drawn to its grounding qualities. I feel the same way about shades of white.

I am glad this resonated with people. Yes I guess black is the color I gravitate towards bc of my coloring .
I have definitely moved towards more interesting blacks since starting with YLF... including texture Joy !

Great lightbulb moment! I realized the same thing a few years ago. I need black in my outfits. It doesn't have to be much, sometimes just black shoes and a little bit of black in an otherwise colorful scarf. Without it, the outfit lacks something essential.

I don't need black at all, but when I wear it, I wear it in a print and with black footwear. My hair is brown, so I bookend with brown footwear. My go-to neutral for pants is blue, though I also have some gray and white pants. Yesterday, I wore a black and white marled sweater with dark blue denim bootcut jeans and black Chelsea boots. This way of wearing black works best for me. I don't like the way I look in a mostly black outfit; it feels too heavy.
