Heh, I did make a list to get a sense of my space needs, and also out of general curiosity. I'm pleased that I actually have a pretty good balance of the type of shoes I need. For example, I don't have too many very dressy shoes or pumps anymore, because I rarely need those kind of shoes.

Tall boots: 11
Mid-calf boots: 3 (2 are cowboy boots)
Booties: 15
Dressy/evening heels: 5
Pumps - day: 4 (2 are kitten heel)
Flats: 7 (pointy toed, ballet, Sperrys, and loafers)
Oxfords: 6
Sneakers (not gear): 4 (Cons, high-tops, wedges)
Sandals - platform wedges: 11
Sandals - heels: 3
Sandals - low wedge or heel: 4
Sandals - flat: 6
Athletic/gear: 4 (2 running shoes, hiking boots, Tevas)
Keep in garage: 4 (rain boots, snow boots, gardening shoes, old sneakers)

Whew!

I think this is one big reason I like to be able to see ALL of my closet. All seasons together, sandals and boots, turtlenecks and tanks. I know what I have and I feel it helps me keep a better control of acquiring.
Good job on the inventorying and purging! Besides, it's more fun to be able to see everything lined up nicely, isn't it?

Wow! I think I have about as many shoes as you, not counting ones I am planning to sell in the right season. I want to do this - a great way to know what I have and remember to use them.

Was shocked at my count! I have 82 pairs and only three to purge. 12 of those are boots which I counted from memory so could have missed one. Still stunned at that number.

Thanks for sharing! I'll show these to my mom and friends the next time someone tells me I just can't have any more shoes. You certainly overpower me in this! (And have a great collection, btw, wouldn't be able to toss most of these pairs)

TraceyLiz, it is kind of shocking to put a number to it, isn't it? It's really funny to me that because I knew I had a BIG collection, I immediately assumed it was over 100. That's what I told the closet consultant when he was here the other day. So it's kind of hilarious that I was a little relieved at getting almost the same count you did. I'm pretty sure that when my sister and I cleaned out my mother's closets after her passing, we found well over 100 pairs of shoes. There were well more than 100 pairs of pants. In fact, closer to 200. So I know where my collecting tendencies come from.

I continued yesterday with jeans and pants. Eight pairs of trousers, 25 jeans. That's after getting rid of four. And there are three more "on notice" although that's mainly because my weight has edges up a little lately.

hmm, i haven't done this since i moved 10 years ago. i know i have to do this again, but its so much easier to not know how many shoes i have. since it is supposed to be a really cold winter, maybe i'll take a cold snow weekend this winter and finally do it

Ha! Yeah, I chose a 90-something degree day on a holiday weekend when I have the house to myself and can drag everything out and make a big mess without worrying about getting in the way of anyone else!

I'm actually thinking about continuing today by attacking the downstairs out-of-season closet. And I am eyeing the pair of booties I want to dye... Maybe I should just chalk this up to a big project weekend.

A Shoeseum! *dies* (Genius, Rae!) How much fun is that?? I have been decent about purging shoes, but I think I am going to borrow a page from your book. Something about seeing your shoes laid out makes me think my shoes would get more use if I could eyeball them all side by side in the light of day.

I think you should wear-and-style a different pair every day and post it Or maybe just the ones you love that don't get as much wear.

Great idea, LBD! One pair that is right on season now but I haven't worn in ages, is the bright red sandal with a black cutout platform. I love them but don't wear much red, so they get lost in the shuffle. I put them further up in my display, and I'm going to work them into a neutral outfit this week!

I desperately want to do this, but our hallway is being pained, and it's likely the best spot for this.

After seeing Caro's shoe post, I came over here to see yours and I was actually anxious thinking, "am I going to come in under her total (I hope)?!," because I love shoes and have been accumulating them for a few years now. So, your "something scary" activity is just what I need to do to cull my 75+ pairs.

First, may I say that I love your boot collection that I see. Also, congratulations on the closet remodel. It will be fabulous and I've done a feng shui thing where all my shoes are pointing outward, like I'm ready to take on the world and go!

This will be difficult for me as I find I do wear shoes for a very long time, but, if I'm honest with myself, there are a number of pairs "just sitting there" that would probably be better off donated to charity. For one thing, I prefer close-toed shoes and boots and I have a few sandals that don't see more than the closet.

So, thank you, Janet, for what you did. This really helps and a new season is the perfect time to clean house.

A standing ovation from me !!! Congrats ! I get a look at my entire shoe wardrobe 2x a year when I do the seasonal switch. This has helped me keep it down. I have become ruthless about comfortable shoes and no longer own "these will do " shoes.

I do want to do the same with my clothes, which I have never done.

Great job getting control of your footwear. Before I had foot surgery a few years back, I had over 30 (or maybe it was 40) pairs of shoes, and realized I rarely wore many of them. Surgery meant rebuilding my collection from scratch and now I currently have a total of 13 counting my gear
7 boots
5 shoes (pumps/loafers/oxfords, etc)
5 sneakers/sandals/flip flops (one of these is for running)
1 pair of snow boots

My smaller shoe closet is really working well for me since I paired it down.

Yes mam, now this is what I'm talking about love your collection. I rill post my boots soon. I don't have any closets so I store my things openly. I'm lucky I the respect that my oldest niece wears the same size 11w like I do so she ell go boot and shoe shopping at my place.
