I have a color palette! - YouLookFab Forum

For the last several years, when I transition my wardrobe for the season, I make a list of the colors I want to focus on. It's pretty loose and I often find things that don't come in one of my listed colors and I buy them anyway.

This year, as I was pulling Soring together, I read a wardrobe organizing tip that kind of tickled me. They suggested organizing your clothes by type, rather than color. Wait?!? Some people organize by color? That's weird. After a few days and some boredom, I decidedjust to try it to see how it looks. It's so pretty! And very cohesive of a palette, even though I don't know what to call this color grouping. This exercise was also the final nail in the coffin for rust in my wardrobe. Cognac flows here, rust doesn't play well.

Here's the picture. I'm sure I'll grow tired of hunting for things in their color category, but for now it makes me very happy.

I like "sorted by color". I organize my kid's books by color. Yeah--it's kind-of a hipster thing to do, but it is also useful. I'm always thinking, "It's a big red book" and that takes me quickly to the appropriate category. I can see this working well for a wardrobe. And, your colors are really pretty!

So pretty! I love your reasoning about it. You get a really nice view of your palette and that's a great base for which colours to focus on next and which ones are the dominant.

It looks so lovely. Now I want to rearrange my closet. Though, I know the odd things out (and there definitely are some) would really bug me.

I organize by color, then by type within the color, tops from sleeveless tanks to long sleeves, followed by toppers. Then bottoms by length, skirts then pants. I am trying to find a good way to also include accessories with the appropriate color.

I organize by colour within type. So blouses are organized by colour but separately from blazers, etc.

My closet is very largely neutrals and blues with white. I would like more colour.

StyleFan, for now it's all fresh enough in my head that I know what/where everything is. We'll see if it becomes tiresome and I switch back.

Suz, your bright red boots really inspired me to pull more of that red into my wardrobe. I love it, but hadn't been buying it much in the last few years.

Jen, I had a few items that didn't quite jive. A few got pulled out and a few just got worked in as best I could, but they do stand out to me. I like the keepers enough to overlook the disruption.

I organize by type and color. Sleeveless to long sleeve (left to right) and within each type I organize by color. Also? Everything faces left. I might be a little bit obsessive about closet organization LOL

It is so helpful to develop a personal palette, isn't it? I have two, really: warm and cool seasons. Burgundy, for example, morphs into a brighter raspberry for spring/summer. Teal moves toward aqua.

I'm like Suz and organize by color within category.

I think that can be absolutely useful. I still organize by tops, pants , skirts but then by color within. So it does help to see what you've got and maybe if you want more or less of something.
I'm also a big fan of occasionally moving thing around in the closet, just trying things a different way, even if you might change back. I think it gives new perspective.

Although I have a lot of clothes, I can find things quickly when arranged by color, then by item. I also hang items that are very much alike vertically. Black sleeveless tops, white long-sleeved tees, striped tees, the sort of thing that can get backed up in the laundry.
For a change, I will plan to organize by type, then color as a way to get my summer clothes together and away from winter things.

Your wardrobe looks beautiful. That is so pleasing to the eye. I organise by type then colour if that makes sense. I find it makes it so much easier to find what I am looking for. Mind you my palette is more limited so really you are just looking at a sea of black lol.

Bethann, I'm finding my seasonal shift uses the same colors, but my neutrals lighten or darken. In winter I use more black and charcoal and in summer I exchange those for cream, white and pale heather gray. I'm finding if I keep my heavier items in my dark neutrals and my lighter items in my light neutrals, the seasonal changes sort of take care of themselves. The part that will really change, come winter, is the middle part with all the white, cream and white prominent prints. That's also the part I'm itching to be able to get into when this cold weather ends!

I have a double rod, so warm weather is up top and cold weather is on bottom. They are sorted by color. It makes it easy to find items and makes me happy to look at.

That looks so cohesive. It's useful to see how things sort of group into color families. I really don't have great intuition for color because I've been wearing black for so long, so if I ever stopped, I think I'd end up with a total hodgepodge. When I did wear colors, it was dark jewel tones (green, blue, purple) but if I ever get back to it I think I'd wear lighter colors.
