I got Vegemite and TimTams from Tam!

How very sweet -- our own Tam, aka yublocka, sent me a package from Australia containing a jar of Vegemite and a package of double chocolate TimTam cookies. I acted as shipping agent for some of Tam's U.S. purchases and this was a thank you.

Not necessary, Tam, but much appreciated. It was lovely to come home from work and see a package from Oz on the doorstep!

I will await suggestions from our Aussie ladies on how to use Vegemite...

What a coincidence. I just commissioned Tam to export some Tim Tams for me.

I love vegemite. A thin layer over butter on toast does the trick for me. I don't know if it indicates a B vitamin deficiency or what, but sometimes I just get a hankering for that stuff.

The trick with Vegemite is to spread it THINLY, as it is very strong. Personally, I like a thin smear spread over hot buttered toast. Yum! I mostly eat Vegemite at breakfast time, but as a child I got packed off to school with Vegemite and lettuce sandwiches.

Oh yummy! Two of Australia's best exports there. Vegemite is also really nice on wholegrain crackers and fresh warm bread with butter. I also have mine with grilled cheese on top. You have to have it with butter though it's pretty strong on it's own. I know people also use it in stews/casseroles to add flavour to the gravy - there are some recipes on their website

As for Tim Tam's, I would suggest trying the "Tim Tam Straw" - you bite a little corner off on each diagonal then get your cup of coffee/hot chocolate/baileys and try to drink through the Tim Tam like a straw. Makes it disintegrate a little but it's delicious!

Is Vegemite the same as Marmite? I suspect it is. If so, you love it or you hate it...

I love it and would go with the thinly smeared on buttered toast option. Also adore it on top of peanut butter on toast. My 3 month old golden retriever puppy, Daisy, loves it dissolved into hot water and stirred into her food. When I was little I loved it dissolved in hot water and drunk as a hot drink, but not sure I'd go for it like that these days!

Have you tried Vegemite before, April? LIke Thunalata says, it is something you either love or hate....I think it's the most disgusting food on earth (which is very un-Australian!) but Tim Tams are awesome- definitely try the Tim Tam straw idea....YUMMMM

I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the Tim Tam slam. It was fun the first time, but I didn't like how soggy it made the cookie...er, biscuit...whatever...

I much prefer my Tim Tams nice and crunchy. Either way please have one on my behalf. Ever since the snack cupboard discussion I have been craving them like mad.

Oh it was a few months ago, Haven't looked for them since. I still have some uneaten girl scout cookies, not the biggest sweet person. I remember them being associated with Pepperbridge Farms.

Anna, you're right! Pepperidge Farms has them out seasonally every year. Actually, I think it's around late fall/winter time, but it's been awhile since I've looked for them.

I rediscovered Vegemite last year. I've liked it just fine years before, and I enjoy it SO much more now. Besides toast, I also use it in soups occasionally.

Mae - Its a very salty spread made from yeast extract. very similar to marmite if you know what I mean. very popular in Australia and NZ. It looks like chocolate and a lot of people get fooled by this but it is an acquired taste. I love it with butter on toast.

Awww April and Tam - big hugs from me for the wonderful generosity you've both shown - it warms my heart!!

My fave way to have Vegemite is on warm toast with butter AND an egg on top - but the egg has to be cooked so its still runny on the inside! So lightly poached or fried... you cut into it and the egg yolk and vegemite together are just superb... *drooling*

It is very much an acquired taste though... and due to all their food sensitivities, my girls are incredibly un-Australian because they have never even tried it LOL

Theresa, yum, that sounds good!! Can your girls eat Aussie Mite? A little boy at my son's child care has it because he can't have Vegemite. It apparently has no artificial color or preservatives and is gluten free. I bought some because I generally try to avoid colors and preservatives and it tastes quite good.

An they both have yeast allergy so I've never even looked into alternatives because I assumed they would all be yeast based! I will have to have a look though because *I* wouldn't mind trying it with my eggies LOL (I am much better avoiding all those nasties myself so eat pretty much the same as my kids, but with a few little indulgences!)

Where did you buy it? My small town often struggles with these sorts of things but if it was a supermarket I may be able to get it.

Oh drat to the yeast allegy. I just looked at the jar (should I admit I'm sitting here putting it on crackers since reading this thread LOL!!) and it does have yeast and yeast extract in it. I just bought it at Woolies in the health food isle.

I agree with others - best way to try vegemite is on toast w butter......mmmm. Just a thin scraping though!!! Or vegemite & cheese on toast. Or vegemite & avocado on toast. Think I'll have that for brekky tomorrow!!!
