Good to know about the banded top being 80s. I do remember wearing them as a little girl in the 80s. I was born in the mid-70s so don't have real memories of the styles then.

Hmm I'll give this a try. I have at least one maybe two peasant blouses. No high waisted pants, but I do wear bootcut jeans and cowboy boots all the time already. I have one pair of wider trousers I'll see if they still fit. Most of these items are spring weight clothing. The only 70s outfit I can think of would be a turtleneck with a shirt. Off to go rummage in my closet now.

Christie, fashion decades often blur into each other - especially at the beginning of a decade. Like the early 80's looked a lot like the 70's, the early 90's looked a lot like the 80's. Know what I mean?

I was just looking through my high school yearbooks, and the one look that was EVERYWHERE was a v-neck sweater with a collared shirt underneath. Collar spread over the sweater's neckline. It was, like, EVERYWHERE. With skirts, jeans, dress pants, you name it.

We were all about the collars in the 70s. (Though not as much as the men were!)

okayyyy, i could do a vneck sweater with a collared shirt. and i am going to be on the lookout for wide leg jeans. that will be my 70sish outfit.

I love seventies fashion, but I think that I have very little in my closet that expresses this. All of my flare jeans are way too big now. I look forward to seeing everyone else's looks though.

Ali McGraw in Love Story is a great inspiration. The movie was 1970, so as Angie said, it's probably blurring the lines between 60s and 70s fashion.

Good Lord, of course, Angie - the shaggy vest outfit I sported for the party. Thanks for jogging my memory. I need to brainstorm other outfit ideas for the poor thing, it hasn't seen the light of day since October!

That's funny, Laura. I never thought of a shirt and sweater as a masculine look. Back in the day it didn't seem masculine at all. Probably partly because "unisex" looks were popular so it didn't matter, and partly because the shirts were likely to be printed or have lace detailing on the collar, and the sweaters were often in pastel or bright feminine colors. And very soft and fluffy! LOL

ETA: Like your first photo of Ali McGraw. A crew-neck tee and jeans might seem very masculine, but her tee is baby pink so it looks totally feminine!

That's right Mary, when it's a baby pink sweater with a lace trimmed shirt I guess that takes it away from masculine territory. Still, it's pretty hard to picture myself sporting something like that these days

But I'm thinking of, say, a red v-neck sweater (with a high v) and a plaid shirt (not that I wore anything like that ... okay, I did). Never again!

Heh. And make sure the collar on that plaid shirt is REALLY BIG!

It's fun to watch everyone do the 70s thing! I think I'll just be taking notes for now.

Random thoughts was right on...pardon the 70's lingo:) but peasant blouses were every where. I had tons.
My favorite outfit was a sleek black blazer in soft velvet that came just to the hip..so the bottom of your cheeks showed skin tight SUPER bells in soft baby pink and my black leather lace up boots...just the oval toe showing...and hair to the waist...kinda missing my youth right now!

I was part of the 70's, though much of it pregnant, and it blurs with the 80's. Wasn't there a strong Western wear revival toward the end, especially chambray shirts for men and women that often were embroidered?
This time around I'll skip the wide pants or jeans and high waists. Those high waists even gave flat stomachs a round look. If I tuck, I'll need a belt to match my top to deal with a bit of short-waistedness. It was a problem, even back then. Turtlenecks, shirts with wide collars, bow blouses, vests, and pendants are ok. No mustard yellow or pastels here, but browns and rust are ok. Angie, I once had a rust safari suit and wore those small square scarves. From my closet I could put together a slightly a-line plaid skirt and fitted turtleneck with a knit wool vest and boots.

Mary, quite right. Tight pullovers worn over pointy collared shirts with big with bell bottoms and flared skirts in the 70's.

Lena, punk looks started in the late 70's and theoretically you are spot on about both Docs and Converse. (Converse all stars are pukka 50's basket ball shoes actually). I do think of Docs as 80's shoes though - whereas so much of the forum thinks of them as 90's shoes. Interesting!

I've been reading this discussion with bated breath. I think I'm going to wait to see how the industry interprets the 70s trend. I don't see myself doing retro 70s but I'm sure I'll be incorporating some 70s trends in a modern way. You all did inspire me to wear a pendant over my turtleneck yesterday. I'll try to get the picture up later this week.

I'm with Laura, in noting that you sure have said you won't be wearing flares a lot, Angie. 3" heels may be your aesthetic preference now but who knows, there may appear some other element to incorporate that balances the look for a smaller heel. (Need I say the word romper?) But you know I love how you are always learning and you're sure to figure it out well ahead of the rest of us. Like Taylor, I stay away from flares and bell bottoms. I do love my boot cuts, but nothing greater than 18" opening for me and with heels is best. However, I am partial to trouser styles (with heels also) so maybe this will be my in.

I think I'll sit this one out. I was in high school/college during the 70's, but now I'm 53, and I have no idea how I'd interpret this trend now without looking silly.

All I can think of is Bella Abzug, and as much as I admire her work, I don't think I want to go there, fashion-wise!

Tarzy, I can't wear hats to this day because I was scarred by Bella and her chapeaux!

I will be wearing these styles soon. What I remember was cropped open neck sweaters.
Jeans with belts, wide legs and definitely ribbed turtlenecks.

My hair was wild, I wore it clipped on one side. Do you remember that style?

I still have some cropped sweaters that always worked for me that I will be wearing.

Are square toed boots in?

Oh, I so hope to be in, especially if someone dumps some early Calvin, Donna Karan or Halston on my doorstep.

I wish I had a scanner /printer...but even so most of my family photo's from those days are on ~slides~ anyone remember those? They must be converted back to photo's first and then scanned .

I remember slides, Taylor! Let's hear it for the carousel projector! LOL

ETA: I'm pretty sure there is software that will let you scan your slides, and even negatives.
