Some of you may remember the lovely sleeveless shirt dress from Anthro I got not too long before we left on our trip. I took it to the tailor to shorten it a few inches, and take in a little of the extra volume at the waist. Well, they took it in all the way up to the armhole, making the bust too tight. I was ready to wear the dress today and slipped it on and started to button it and said “what the hell…”

I’m going to take it back and see if there is any way they can let that part back out again. I'm really hoping it's salvageable. But it led me down a bad way of thinking, blaming my body (every damn thing in a button front gaps at the bust, and this was one rare item that didn’t!), thinking about breast reduction surgery, promising to lose ten more pounds, etc. When it is not my fault!

Yuck.

So pic 2 is what I ended up wearing instead. It’s hot and humid and I feel a bit frumpy but that’s my state of mind. Jamie assures me I don’t look frumpy so I’ll trust he’s being truthful. At least I have cool shoes, LOL

If they can't fix it, could you re-purchase and find a different tailor?
Would be totally worth it in my view.

My alternate idea would be to have an insert put under the arms of a solid (perhaps mesh?) fabric that matches either the blue or the plum in the print. But I would probably need to source the material myself, or try a different tailor.

So not your body's fault, so don't punish it. It's the tailor's, and you should probably find a new one. Hopefully, this tailor can at least remedy the problem if s/he didn't remove too much material. It's a lovely dress. You look fab in your replacement outfit. Love the new shoes.

Oh I know those feelings of hot and frumpy all too well - I can feel your frustration . What a disaster - and I hope the tailor is going to compensate you for the dress . Did he / she not pin it on you first ?

Your fall back outfit is great - not frumpy , just a different vibe . But I have gone down the same path with vowing to get a breast reduction and / or lose 10 lbs or blah blah blah. It’s crazy , isn’t it ?

Clearly it’s not you. Full stop. If the tailor can’t make it right, I would ask to compensate for the loss of a wearable sress.

Janet, if it can't be restored to its original seam, the inset idea is a good one. I have a sleeveless rose print blouse with a black mesh inset at the armhole/side seam and I love that detail.

OF COURSE your tailor should do that for free. What a let down.

And I have been right there with you with the breast reduction and ten pounds making a wild difference in my life. For all we try to control our self-talk, it some times gets the upper hand!

One other thought: I have sworn off using the word frumpy in my thinking, even about myself. It feels judgemental of either ourselves or other women and I note Angie has not used it for a long time, I mentioned this in another thread some time back and Angie confirmed. Not to make you feel bad for doing so, just a comment to consider on the journey to self-acceptance which is a long and fraught one that I still frequently struggle with, as per my grey hair post a couple of months ago.

How frustrating! Try to take it out on the tailor not yourself! Ok, bad advice I guess, but why do we blame ourselves for other people's mistakes? Anyway, you look great in your alternative outfit and, indeed, you do have cool shoes!

Hopefully you’ll be able to get the dress fixed. If the tailor didn’t cut the fabric they should be able to fix it.
Your alternate outfit looks cool and fabulous, and not a bit frumpy.

Oh, I'm so sorry. That's so disappointing! I hope that it can be salvaged! You could never look even remotely frumpy. I love your WIW with those fab sneakers. You look gorgeous!

Far out! That’s so annoying. I took some jeans to my tailor and asked for them to be hemmed 4cm. I think she took off 4 inches. They are so short now! I’ve tried letting down the remaining hem but I think they are ruined.

For your dress, I’ve seen Trinny do the mesh insert thing. I think it could work. (What a pity you could not use the fabric she took off the hem to make the insert.)

But all is not lost, you still look super fabulous!

I am commiserating with you. I also had a the exact experience with a ruined dress. When they redid it, they still took in the underbust! So upset. Second time!! My warning!!

This shop has a very very good reputation and I don’t think I could find a better one in the area. I would expect them to know their craft but the pinning was inadequate. I had the dress on right side out and she placed just a few pins and still no good second time!

Dressmakers, if I insisted on trying the dress inside out and pinning right there would we know exactly? Would that type of pinning give us the clear communication to get a great fit?

Thank you kindly, everyone! I know it’s a very “leaves on the swimming pool” kind of problem, but I was so disappointed.

The tailor is our nearby dry cleaner, and they are a super sweet Korean couple. They like us and do a great job for us, so this is an anomaly and I know they will be apologetic. I took it in on a day when the husband did the fitting and pinning, and his wife does the sewing. He did not pin it all the way up to the armhole so I chalk this up to a bit of an error in assumption. We’ll see if they can fix it.

I've learned the hard way too that alterations don't go as planned much of the time :/ Hope the dress is salvagable!

I'm so sorry, that's a big disappointment. And though I had to laugh at your "leaves on the swimming pool"...never heard that before!...here is a Brene Brown quote I like better:

Other people have it worse AND your pain is real.

You could never look fr**** (nods to Jenni) even if you dragged out of bed and went to hot yoga in your PJs and then got rained on. You certainly don't look it here!

A small update: I took the dress back to the tailor and only the husband was there, but he’s going to show it to his wife and they are going to let it back out as much as they can. If that isn’t enough, he seemed confident that we can solve the issue with an insert of some kind. They are very nice and I know they want to make it right. Crossing fingers and trusting it will work out one way or another.
