I bought a dress! Now how do I style it?

I posted a week or so ago because I needed a dress for my husband's work Christmas party. I bought one today but have no idea what tights, shoes, jewelry etc to get to go with it. I wouldn't mind a little shrug or something if anyone has seen something that would go with it. The shop girl said black tights - but do I need very opaque, semi-opaque or what? And what color and style shoes? The picture is from the dressing room without the proper shapewear underneath.

How about off-black or grey semi-opague tights or sheer pantyhose? Black or grey heels, or a fun color like red or teal would look nice. You could wear a shrug but I would stay with one that has no collar since the collar on your dress is so pretty. You could also wear a grey or off-white shawl.

I would say if you went that direction you would want very dark opaque stockings/tights and the same color shoe/bootie.

Or you could go a different direction: What about grey/silver sparkle tights and silver shoes. This would play on the silver collar.

Hm, I wonder if I could add some kind of shirt under it to give it sleeves? Would that be insane?

I think it would be really hard to find a top to go under that wouldn't compete with the collar. You might be able to with a scoop neck tee in grey/silver or cream.

I think it all depends on what appeals to you. Personally I don't like a combination of heavy opaque tights with a very light sheer sleeveless dress. For example I liked the the first Tracina's link less than the second - and I think it is because the second dress has sleeves. But this is me, you may have completely different view of them
I like the idea of sparkly grey or silver tights much better -and low contrast shoes. Not black.
As for the sleeves - if you have a sheer white or cream blouse it may work - otherwise I would go for a topper.
Not for the official party but I would like to try layering this dress over a black t-neck - and then add opaque tights and booties...

I think the dress has to go back. I tried it on again and it just isn't flattering. This always happens when I shop with my mom, she always gets so enthusiastic about things that just aren't me or don't look good on me and I get swept along. I just don't know what I'm going to do, I'm at my wit's end. I don't know what to get and I'm running out of time. Maybe it's time for cords and a reindeer sweater.

I went to Nordstroms today and used a personal shopper! Had a great experience and got this dress: http://www.lyst.com/clothing/c.....ess-black/

It looks great on me and it's so practical too! They're going to put a few stitches in to keep the top more modest. I got these shoes:

And I think I'll wear my vera wang black textured tights. So I'm breathing easy again, just need to pick out some jewelry!

I like the dress you got from Nordie's better! More sophisticated looking, and can be made to look more fancy by adding jewelry. The other dress was alright, but looked a little teenagery to me.

This is fascinating. The dress you ultimately chose is so very different from the first dress. These express two radically different style personas! It sounds as if you are much more comfortable in the new dress. (I confess that I would be, too.) Hope you have a wonderful time!
