I am going to Hawaii!

Sorry for my extended absence- I'm drowning in my thesis and work.

I am FINALLY taking a holiday (my first since 2008!). I'm going to Hawaii in August for a holiday and to my best friend's wedding. We are spending time in Waikiki and Maui- any tips on where to stay/what to do/where to shop/what to wear??

I have tons of tips! We'll be there in August too, but on Kauai - although I'll be in Waikiki on August 7th if you want to shop together (with my 7 year old - er, maybe not). In Waikiki, the Ala Moana shopping mall has everything, including a giant Banana Republic with petite sizes, and by the Ward Warehouse area is a Nordstrom Rack.

What is your budget for places to stay? And what do you enjoy doing? I would definitely drive out to Kailua on Oahu and spend a day at the beach there - you can rent kayaks or just hang out - it's the most beautiful beach I've ever been to...

I know what you are talking about with thesis and work. So hang in there.

Hawaii sounds great. Maui is great for outdoors. There's a great bike ride downhill if you can get up early enough, there's a great botanical garden, and Molokini(?) was a great spot to swim/snorkel/dive. There's also a road to Hana where you can see lots of waterfalls. I recommend leaving the shopping to Waikiki. Lots of options there.

Ah, that's right - you can bike down the volcano, Haleakala - and you should see the sunrise there in the morning for sure. The Lonely Planet guidebook has lots of good tips on fun things to do in Hawai'i and hidden gems as far as black sand beaches and waterfalls. On Oahu, snorkeling at Haunama Bay is amazing - but you have to get there early as they rightly restrict the number of people per day for ecological reasons.

SOooo jealous! the only tip I have is pack light and snorkel as much as possible:)
While in Maui I like to in Kaanapali..the 3 mile stretch on the beach...plenty of resorts to choose from:) Enjoy a much deserved vacation:)
