Husband's closet find try on

Found this old coat my husband never wears...its BURBERRY!! They had a licencing agreement in Japan a while back and this model is made in Japan. Its a Japanese mens M size which is my size (though cut might be a little too straight on the hips). The arm cuff and collar are frayed a little which is why it stayed in his closet but I can find a place to repair them and clean the collar a little. I think he'll let me have it if it looks good as its actually not made with any animal products (current Burberry trenches have leather buckles and some trims but this one is just metal). The buttons are plastic and not horn but it is also sewn really well and looks good quality so I'd like to know what you think. Should I keep or hand back to my husband?

I think it’s cute and love the idea of ‘repurposing’ a garment. If you get the collar repaired, I’d consider having the belt moved up a little. I feel it sits a little low on you.

Rachylou it is at my natural waist, maybe the proportions are off somewhere else?

Oh I think I see what you mean, it doesn't sit straight the whole way round. You can see from the side. I do need it a bit higher then.

It looks very nice when worn open, or it could be worn with belt tied on the back ( like they used to do on some shows a few seasons ago ).

I'm wondering about the colour too...i'm not sure it suits me. I prefer navy or black.

Wow, look at how well it fits your shoulders! I think it would go well with navy or maybe burgundy. What are you likely to be wearing at the time of year when you’d wear it? (Ie what temps will it be when it’s rainy?). Tights, pants, a scarf would all show and could be in colors you love.

Then again, this is about you caring about your appearance and building a style you love—foisting a coat in a color you don’t like onto yourself works against that goal. Maybe it could be your spare, or your darker one could be a little flashier or frillier or something than you’d usually get and you’d have this one for when that didn’t seem appropriate /didn’t match your mood.

As far as leather trims & such go on an item you already own, the harm has already been done, the money has already exchanged hands—you aren’t causing any further harm by wearing something you already have. You are reducing consumption. Sal phrased it brilliantly “the most sustainable wardrobe is the one you already own”.

While I’m being opinionated, I’ll also say that “I think he'll let me have it if....as its actually...” gets my hackles up. That could be why I’m single. That and a tendency to speak my mind when no one asked me to, lol.

Fashintern, oh that was just written badly. He'll let me have it if I want it no matter what it looks like. What I mean is if it doesn't look good, I don't want it . If it looks good i'll ask him if its okay to use it. Haha. Maybe we can share even. He looks great in it so might be better for him anyway, but he seems to have changed his style recently.

My husband isn't perfect and now I realise what it was like to be my long suffering mother haha. I've turned into a raging feminist since I got married but he'd never comment on my appearance.

Also yes about the shoulders!! I was surprised because anything that tends to fit my shoulders is far too big elsewhere and this has the opposite problem maybe a little too tight in the hips haha.

The trench fits your shoulders well and looks great when opened! would it work work with your chosen colour palette? I am quite pale and camel is a tricky colour for me!

I think it looks good, especially to experiment. Since it’s already there, you can play around with it and see, do you like the trench style, do you like the color or almost that color ( if it were “ your” camel or beige ) or do you prefer darker colors, maybe turns out you don’t really like the trench style, is it a versatile ( or useful) weight for warmth, what about length , does such a coat go over what you’d usually be wearing, etc.
Might help your “ vision “ of how you want to dress and what to look for. Again, not necessarily having to go out and get everything, “ complete “ your wardrobe , but where does it fit in priorities. Or knowing when you come across a good deal, if you have a good idea of what you want.

I agree the fit through the shoulders is good, but it does seem a bit straight on you — I think it looks good open but I realize that’s limiting.

My bigger concern is that I’m not sure the color is the most flattering on you. Do you wear scarves? They could help frame your face with a nicer color. I would just hate to see you invest $$ in altering and repairing a coat if you find the color to be lacking.

I have a Burberry trench in a dark teal color and a fabrication that would probably suit vegan ideals — I wonder if another secondhand Burberry in a different color might suit you better.

I’d 100% keep...invest a small amount to dry clean, and then I’d be done. I really like it. And i like the color, I’m partial to a classic in a classic color.

I like it on you. It’s a classic, versatile piece, can be worn with everything. Worth a try.
As a petite person, I often find belts on trenches are too low on me, it’s an easy fix. Also, I would suggest to move buttons to make more room in the hips area.

Although it may be a close fit across the hips - try taking your hand out of your pocket, so you don’t get the pulling. I sometimes ‘borrow from the boys’ to fit my strong shoulder line. The styling for men is usually slimmer through the hips relative to their shoulders.

By all means, borrow from DH, but use it as a placeholder. Don’t sink $$ into making it work, and don’t use it as an excuse to not get a coat you need.

Because your strong shoulder line is a thing, look to North American designers who cut for an athletic physique and use a fit model with broad shoulders, like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.

With your tall physique and strong shoulder line, borrowing from DH's closet is a great idea. However, the trench does seem a tad too straight across the hip line. At least to my eye, the trench looks better when worn open. Also, if you have any doubt about the color, let it go and seek out another one in a darker neutral more to your liking.

I’m wondering if the bottom button can be moved over slightly as mentioned above. That would help with the teensy bit of pulling through the hips.

I vote keep and play around with the styling. It might look less straight cut over a skirt or wide leg pants, for example. I think it looks fab on you and is a classic that basically portrays a clear style no matter what.

N, the sleeves are a little short - do you mind that?

Also a little straight through the torso for this type of silhouette, as others have said. Wearing it open offsets that, though. Better! The colour is also a little warm for you, but I bet better in person.

Play around with it. Take it out for a spin. Assess how you feel in it. Reassess those feelings.

I agree with what most are saying. The arms are a little short, i'd rather have proper length ones. I think its probably either that they were short to begin with to suit Japanese physique or my husband had it tailored to fit him. I'm taller than my husband and wider in the shoulders too. I also agree it's too straight on me, my figure suits being cinched at the waist and probably flared at the hips more. Plus I think I'd prefer a longer one anyway. As for the colour, yes its too warm for me. All in all it would take a lot to make it work so I think i'll still get it fixed up for hubby to wear again but it will stay his. Looks better on him.

I'd really love a new Burberry myself as they are made in Yorkshire, UK my home county. Such a pity there isn't any at all with no leather or horns...perhaps they'll release one at some point. I can keep an eye out. I do have a navy sort of spring jacket, its to be worn open anyway so its not like critical to get one right now. I can take my time. I'm rather worried about finding a good winter coat though when it gets to that time of year. Finding vegan ones is hard already, nevermind my size and then style preferences. Think it might be near impossible.

This month i'm investing in some basics. Would you believe i've never had a proper fitting bra and for the last 2 years or so i've been wearing stretched out ones. I mean its a good job I don't really need any support in that area as the bras weren't offering anything. I've just ordered a range of sizes from Selfridges in the UK that has global free returns and hopefully can find the right one.

Has anyone heard of Boob or Bust? Its a Facebook group but they have a website with a calculator. They say nearly everyone is wearing a band that is 2-4 inches too big as we dont need to add on anything because of the stretch in the material. In the past there wasnt any stretch which is why they added it but now with the materials we use it's not needed. Make sense as I realised I've never had a bra that's gore fits flush to my torso. I used to wear 32 and 34 bands so i'm trying 28 and 30 bands. I'm excited to get one that fits! I'll get the matching underpants and some camisoles as well and maybe some tights (panty hose) just to make sure the basics are covered. I have socks.

I hope you do get your Burberry! Is there an outlet back home? Maybe family can get you one for your birthday.

For a winter coat, what have you done the last few years? Just shivered? I hope not! What do you think of puffer/puffy coats? Some of them are dressier than others, and you can get them with fill other than down.

I didn’t realize how much difference it makes to have nice underthings until I did a refresh last fall, which I posted about earlier this year. Glad you’re getting that figured out!

No I have a puffer coat, men's one. It is nice and warm, so I do have something but I think it doesn't go with the style i'm hoping to curate. That said, its not the end of the world. I'll still be warm!

You know I dont know if there is an outlet or not. My family certainly wouldn't buy me one haha. I won't be going back until everyone is vaccinated at least so I imagine in 2022...but one can hope it might be okay for Christmas this year. Its hard to say.

Yes I thought I may as well start at the beginning with the basics because once those are sorted, I think it will make it easier to look my best in the clothes on top. Plus i've been wearing what I call "baggy granny pants" for years, they are actually wearing through. Might be nice to start wearing something a little younger looking and dare I say it a bit sexier haha. Not that I really care one way or another though I do like comfort for undergarments so won't be any thongs in my future at all.

N, for your bra research, also try https://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/ and https://www.abrathatfits.org/calculator.php! It’s spot on about band sizes, and wearing the wrong band size can also throw off the cup size. Be prepared for your cup size to be larger because it’s in proportion to the band. I was shocked to go from wearing ill-fitting 32/34 As and Bs to a 28/30 D/DD, but it’s correct.

Gillian, yes I use the boob or Bust calculator that put me at 28E or a 30D, so i'm trying those on plus 28DD and a 30C just in case I got my measurements wrong. Hopefully one of those will fit! This is from a 32B/34A.

I used the calculator you suggested and it came out at 30D which I think was the one the boob and bust came out at and that is going to be the one I most likely am, I hope so too as I ordered the 2 nicest ones in that size haha. Hope I get to keep them. Fingers crossed.

Also I found this one on the Burberry website. Might be the only one that doesn't have leather. The colour is stone which might be a better shade as it seems cooler toned, but still warm I think? The only problem is the hardware is gold toned and I want everything to match and be silver toned so maybe this one isnt the right one for me. Plus the price...its eye watering and this model isn't even made in England...I think i'll have to check next years offerings when i've built up my essentials

The trench, especially open, does fit so well with your French style plans. I ideally it would be longer in the arms and overall length I think.
