Not an expert, but I think the neck line on the first 2 JJill dresses might not pass. I think you might be ok with the third.

Try some good consignment shops. I bought a dress for a wedding in pale blue with a matching sheer jacket for a song. You are welcome to it. It is probably a small or medium, but I need to check the size.

Angie, I will need to keep my arms and shoulders covered the entire time but I can go sleeveless and add a topper. The JJill dresses are likely to be too casual although I am keeping them because they are suitable for work in the summer. So, I’m still looking.

I feel your pain! I just went to Nordstrom Rack and found these 2:

I looked under the Mother of the Bride dress tab/ section

Best of luck!

Madeline has some great dresses there. Uniqlo has some plain but sleek dresses that might work, also. Especially with a topper.

The blue and white Hawaiian print Angie found is lovely. I can see that being worn again.

Thanks Angie, these are perfect. I see many here that I like and am grateful for your suggestions! I have ordered two, the Vince dress and the striped dress from Whistles. I like both and can see myself wearing them for more than one occasion.

Madeline, thanks for your help! I really like the first of the dresses. Very pretty. I am trying to decide if the neckline is too deep and wonder if the sleeves will be too short for me. I have long arms so they may fall above my elbows. I may order it to see.

Net-a-porter is having a sale. There are a lot of dresses in it. You might want to check it out.

Oh good! We’re making progress! Let me know how things turn out

Two of the dresses arrived. Farm Rio is the lace dress. I tried it on and it was too much fabric for me. The Orire dress gives me some curves where they don't exist. I don't mind the Orire dress although it may be a warmer green than ideal, maybe it's okay, my skin isn't looking sallow. What do you think? DH hasn't seen the Orire dress yet but strongly disliked the Farm Rio dress. This is the smaller of two sizes of the Orire. The larger size may poof too much on top. If this dress is a contender, I will post pics of both sizes.

I can make a bolero from the yarn used in the swatch using the pattern shown below. I can also use it to make a shawl.
It would tone it down and dress it up a bit because there are metallic strands in the yarn. I also tried the dress belted but prefer it without.

Bonus picture of another summer dress, striped. I like it and plan to keep it for work in the summer.

Can’t wait to see the striped Whistles shirt dress! I’m rooting for that one — very sharp!

From the pictures, I like that shade of green on you. I know real life colors can be different. Fun style. Is it comfortable? Will it be cool enough for a summer wedding?

Elle, the Orire dress is made of linen.

I agree - the lace is too much.

I think the Orire dress is a possibility. It is flattering, conservative. My hesitation is that this is a trending style of dress here - shirring is very popular. I really like it but it might mean in 2-3 years you might not like it as much.

The shade of green of the Oribe seems more flattering than the darker shade but the style does not strike me as modest even though it is covered.

Also it looks a little like your legs are tied together but I suspect that is my inner child's opinion

The Orire dress looks really nice on you, Staysfit. I think the color is pretty on you, even though it is unusual for you. The knitted bolero (I'm picturing a much shortened version of the pattern pic, correct?) could work well, though I'm unsure about why you'd need it if you are more concerned about heat than cold at the event. You could dress up the look with the jewelry and shoes you choose.
All of that said, my money is on the Vince dress. It looks perfect: more your style and color palette, while also appropriate for the event. Fingers crossed it fits you well and looks as good on as it does in the stock photo.

Phoebe, the Orire dress has that odd band around the legs, but it is loose. I think it creates curves and that may not be ideal for a “modest” dress choice. In person, the brighter lighter green is better than the darker green. I haven’t had anything this shade of green before and it’s growing on me….

DH does not love the style of the Orire dress. I am still undecided. It’s linen and would work in July heat and humidity, long sleeved, has a long skirt, high neckline and no skirt slits or body cutouts. I think it could be dressed up or down depending on shoes and accessories. It may be a good fallback option to hold for a while until I see how the other dresses look.

Sal, I haven’t seen anyone wearing shirred dresses like this so it’s good to know it’s trendy at present. Perhaps it’s a fringe trend? The dress may be a bit pricy for a one time event, however, it is well within my allotted budget. I think I could find a way to wear if again and if not, most of my culled clothes go to DD30.

The emerald Orire dress is fabulous! Surprisingly, right, Staysfit? Colour suits you

I vote keep it as backup. Wait for the others to come in and compare.

The Summery striped dress is great! KEEP.

Thanks Angie. I went with my gut on both the Orire dress and the striped dress (English Factory). I am surprised by the Orire dress! Who knew I could wear this awesome happy Green color?! The style is different, but I kind of like it. I think my eye is adjusted to seeing myself in very classic styles and cooler greens.

I personally adore the Vince dress in the stock photo. As soon as I saw that I thought that would be the one, but I did see you originally said you didn’t want floral? I agree with Sharan that it’s more your style and colour palette.
Afraid I am probably leaning towards DH’s view on the bright green Orire dress?

The Vivienne Files blog is showing a bunch of modest dresses today.

Not bad, and it depends on how you feel in each of these 2 for the wedding-but I would also wait for the Vince dress before deciding. I know I suggested the Orire (but the haven't seen the others posted later!:-)) as the color and fabric is more summery but it is a bit too much of shirring for having the staying power and even if the lace maxi can be perceived as a lot but also has a more more classic cut- which makes good for a weeding guest with so strong requirements to be decent. And why the need of the layering over long sleeves? Both dresses fit well and look fab on you--so you at least you will have enough choices!.

I think you were referring to Shatnez rules? If those are needed, they forbid wearing wool and linen in the same garment. Linen and cotton seem to be ok.

Joyce B. Thanks for the link. I enjoyed l reading why linen and wool cannot be mixed in a garment and am glad to learn that I can wear something that has other fibers besides these two mixed.

More dresses arrived today and I took some quick pictures.
1. Whistles striped dress - Is the color too dark? I'm not sure I love the color of the stripes. It's wrinkled and needs a good steaming. It feels warm when wearing it inside today, mid 70's F, so it may be too heavy for July.
2. Vince dress...Color is a deep silvery blue, the flowers are brown and white. It feels very large. I don't usually wear dresses this shape so I cannot tell if it's flattering.
4/6. JJill paisley dress. Has a slit which may be alright since it is not above my knee...really not sure. I love the light blue color. The material is light and cool. Is it too casual for a formal wedding that isnt black tie? I'm keeping it for work.
5/7. JJill 4 way light blue topper over the dress. It's also lightweight, maybe linen. They sold out of the small size. This is a bit large (you may be able to see in shoulder seams) but knits are forgiving so I think it works.
8. Farm Rio dress..too much material. Color seems dark. It is lighter than the Whistles dress. I don't like this. I reposted here for comparison.
9. Orire dress, pretty green, linen cotton blend, not a classic design. Seems to meet criteria. I think this can be dressed up with the right shoes and jewelry.
10. Another JJill dress which I am keeping. Obviously too casual for the wedding but it's perfect for summer. I love the colors and the neckline which is bra friendly despite being halter-like.
11. JJill dress with a green linen shirt tied as a topper. Perfect for work but maybe not wedding friendly although it may be an option for dinner with my family.

12. JJill purple dress. I love the color. May be able to knit a topper for this. It has mother of pearl buttons. It's light weight and cool. This was my original first pick until the green dress arrived. Probably too casual but I can get some metallic yarn for a topper or even use the yarn I considered for the green dress. I think it works.

I learned that I need two dresses, one for the wedding and one for a family dinner (although it still needs to adhere to the modesty rules.)

Which if any of these do you think I should choose for the wedding? For the family dinner?

Personally, I love 2-3 for the colors, and the shape is superb on you. It was actually my favorite from Angie’s suggestions. Is it flowy? Because it looks like it is.

For the dinner, assuming a little more casual, I like the blue print sleeveless dress with the crossover knit topper as in 5. It looks summery.

Not the most expert here, but hoping you are seeking any and all feedback.

Oh I love the Vince dress on you! Colour is perfect with your hair! I don’t think it looks too big at all and I think it is flattering. I love that for the wedding, and the JJill paisley blue with blue topper for the family dinner. Just my highly selective opinion of course!
