Oh my goodness me how rude for there to be an expectation for the amount! $100 is more than generous x

Agreed that you have already gone above and beyond with $100. I was shocked to read theynwere expecting $1000! Maybe she'll send you an invoice for the balance.

Ok well I was going to say that your gift should be appreciated regardless and that I wouldn't add to it. But after reading that she "expects" a $1-2K gift, I'm even more inclined to say that your gift, which you are giving freely, is definitely more than enough. Nothing further. It might be curmudgeonly of me, but that's all I would do :p

You're not sending more money are you?!? This is ridiculous!
Now what do you do about future wedding invites and so on? I'm pretty passive aggressive about these things and rarely confront, but I'd be tempted to call the mother and explain all the ways her expectations are out of whack. How wealthy are they that they don't realize orders of magnitude?

Now I'm curious what you did kellygirl...

Oops, went on vacation with limited internet. (Actually, I was trying to conserve data since DDs tend to use their phones more than me.) Thanks again for all of your wise responses. I definitely feel like the amount is sufficient now and that the others are out of line. I had my doubts at first--thinking the rules could be different for family. This is "just" high school after all. It's not a wedding! DH and I discussed it while we were on vacation and decided just to leave things as they are--especially since we already spent the balance having fun! LOL!

That's great to hear, Kelly! I, too, think$1000 is *completely* out of line for a HS graduation gift, even from family.

When I graduated HS, I remember getting lots of "stuff" --practical things, from friends/friends parents. Usually in the $20-$50 range. Some of that stuff I still use, 15 years later! The things that made it for me were a travel jewellery case, an alarm clock (in storage in the US, but I used it 'til I left), and a laundry bag. I remember getting a small fan to use in the dorm room, soap/bath sets (in a carrier), and gift certs for bath/home stores (for sheets, etc). My parents told me they'd buy me luggage for my gift, but bought my first semester's books instead.

It sounds like this grad (or their parents) need some schooling in grace!
