How would you define this style..

I came across this image scanning the new arrivals at ASOS. I am very drawn to the pieces which form the look but more than that I feel there is something about the photo which defines how I wish to dress now.

I would really appreciate your help in distilling the look, how would you define it and do you think it is compatible with my personal style?

Hmmm. It is a longer slim coat, slightly loose fitting neutral pant and white tee. I think it is a manfriend classic casual look.

I'm sort of joking. Whatever it is, I am drawn to it too. I appreciate the simplicity and calmness of the neutrals.

I'm not entirely sure either, Julie, but I could absolutely see you wear an outfit like this. I love the idea of the long coat on you, combined with slouchy or wide-legged trousers.

My first thought was: Smart Casual (Modern) Classic with a bit of Androgyny/Tomboy thrown into the mix.

I can see you wearing something like this.
I don't know what to call it but to me it looks like a kind of slouchy polished.There is no apparent structure in any of the items but the fact that the top and bottom are low contrast creates a long line which makes it look polished.Does this make sense?

Okay so we are seeing modern classic, tomboy, minimal but with a softer or more romantic edge. That gives me a starting point and actually some of these words I would already use to describe my style. I would need to work on the simplification of my look with neutral pieces and minimal styling. This could be fun.

I have been eyeing this mac for a while but the colour gives me pause, if it happened to come in black or navy or even grey I wold be frantically saving the pennies.

Like, an androgynous look but with soft, luxurious fabrics and shapes. Sweater must be cashmere.

I'm drawn to this too! Love the minimalism, the striking light & dark, the ease/slouch in it, nice bit of structure in the trousers, and maybe in the coat. Looks to me more European than New York urban.

I get Eileen Fisher allusions with the ease, the proportions, and the color pallete.

It reminds me of street style pics from some fashion week.

This is why I've never defined my own style. I can't describe anything I just keep revolving around euro modern, classic with a twist. But what is the 'twist'?

Jules, I think this outfit is completely you. The slouchy trousers and long sweater coat (I have a navy coat from last year at Banana Republic and it's incredible) are so you. I'd say the important element is that the sweater coat has defined shoulder seams, on the shoulder, so it doesn't look like a cascading cardigan. It needs to have a tailored appearance on top to fit with the menswear feel.

p.s. Not sure I love the shoes with it. You can do better

I don't get modern classic with this at all. I am curious how others do? Or maybe I don't know how that term is defined. To me this is more of a trendy, rather than classic, look?

My first reaction was "Katherine Hepburn" but then I did a google search and her pants were wide legged. However I still think it applies: it's a feminine take on menswear.

I need to find a better sounding adjective for it, but when I think of the slouchier menswear inspired styles, I think "grandpa". So I might call this look "Elegant Grandpa".

This is trendy with an ounce of tomboy. Where is the romance? The blouse is forever classic - but that item happens to be very on trend at the moment - so it's a little confusing.

Laura and Angie, I do like to wear heals but those are a little crazy. I would add an oxford or a mid heel into the mix depending on the chores of the day.

So step one, would be to acquire a jacket of this type to add to the things I already own. I'm excited.

I like looking at this outfit, I won't bother to try and describe it because that's already been done, but the more tomboy or androgynous looks i see on here just convince me further that this is just really not my style.

But like i said, I do enjoy seeing it on others!

It looks quite cosmopolitain. It is interesting to see the design of the herringbone trousers with a gathered waistband at the back. The trousers look smart yet relaxed.
