how well can you discern color?

I don't know if this is "general" or "off-topic", so feel free to move this post if needed, or let me know and I'll repost in a different area.

A discussion about color in another thread reminded me of this online test I took a few months ago. You are supposed to rearrange the color tiles in each row until you put them in order. I found it fun, but as always, YMMV.

If I remember correctly, the lower your score, the more accurate your color vision is. If you have trouble with the test, it may or may not be due to your vision. It may be that your monitor isn't calibrated for color correctly.

I did this a while ago, it was fun and I did really well. I use it as an argument when my husband and I disagree about a color. Well, I took a test and my color perception is outstanding...

I just did it and have perfect color vision. I do know that my color memory is very good. I can see something in a store and will know that it will match what is in my closet. I did not know there was a test.

I've done this test twice (I think) and gotten a perfect score both times.

I know that others cannot discern color as well as I can. You don't know how many random purple things I rejected for various wedding stuff (i.e. bridesmaid dresses, flowers, J's tie, etc) because it was not the right plummy purple or too blue or too pink or whatever. Also, it shocks me what some people think is "plum" and "eggplant". =P (Notably, Paper Source. Huh? Since when is "beet" actually plum, and "plum" lavender?)

I'm on our old lap top and i'm tired plus in bad light but managed a score of 17. I could probably do better when in better light, but that was fun! I might try again tomorrow

I remember scoring a "4" the first time, which isn't quite perfect. However, I was very aware of how much time I was spending on the test while I was at work, so I chalk up my lack of a perfect score to feeling rushed.

I plan on taking it again later today. I expect a perfect score this time.

I know I am partly colourblind so that test scares me :p

Ok. So I did it once and then a second time after seeing everybody's scores. The first time I got a 30 (whoa! sucky!). The second time a 15. I think... I think I don't have the patience to do 4 lines of colour. However, both times my weakness was in the blue-green range.

I have the eyes of a dog! But I do know my fruits & veggies... that is too fascinating about Paper Source, Diana.

Yeah, that is so not "plum". And that "violet" looks like periwinkle to me.

Those of you scoring "high" on the test should take comfort in the fact that the responders on the (non-fashion) blog where I found this test had much higher average scores than you guys. I suspect that people into fashion probably aren't innately better at seeing color differences, but I would imagine that we are more attuned to the differences and take better care at noticing them.

I took this a few months ago and was surprised to get a perfect score! I had always thought I was color perception impaired, but it turns out I'm pretty good.

I wonder if my aversion to blues has anything to do with my (relative) inability to see them.

I heard an interesting thing on the radio once. There was some group of people out there that had only one word they used for both blue and green in their own language. Well, the interesting thing is, they also couldn't tell the difference between blue and green. They weren't colour blind, but the difference was not paid attention to.

I scored a 440. I didn't think I was that bad. In all fairness, I normally get less than 25% of the Ishihara correct. Anybody know what the max score in the test is?

Rachylou, you may be right about your aversion to blues. If you have trouble differentiating them, it would be harder to work with them in your clothing or decor. Which means that you will get less positive feedback relative to your other color related efforts. And even if that weren't the case, you may get less emotional satisfaction from working with them because they aren't as interesting in their differences (to you) as other colors.

I remember learning a long time ago (which means I need to check my data) that cultures tend to name colors in the same (or similar) order. I am sure that red is always first, but I can't remember which colors tend to come next. Must go look that up soon...

@Lyn* - I wouldn't say it's gotten in the way, or at least not since I realized that's what was wrong. It has influenced my style a great deal. I can almost guarantee no one will see me in something both red and green.
