how to wear a tie without looking like a dork?

I have seen several bloggers wearing ties and looking fabulous. I'm a little chicken to experiment on my own. anyone has pics for inspiration? I looked online and couldn't find many women wearing ties

I'm sure you would look great in a tie! The bloggers you were inspired by sound like a good source to emulate. Ties can run the gamut of looking buttoned up or very casual so it depends on what you look you are going for. I agree it is hard to find a lot of inspiring pictures.

FWIW, except during Fashion Week, I think Angie tends to wear ties INSIDE her collar, a little down her neck. Men's ties have been varying widths over the decades, and I would want to be sure that the width is in scale with your bone structure and not too overpowering.

Next, how about tying the square silk(y) scarf like a tie to start with, then you can move on to the real thing once you start feeling more comfortable.

Perhaps pick something low-contrast as well, to minimize how visible your new style experiment is, so you are less self-contentious.

I find neck ties easier to wear than most other non necklace neck wear. If the whole tie is going to be visible I try to keep it on the narrow side. They're easiest to wear with a solid colour button up shirt (white is a no brainer), but putting them over prints can be fun too. It's a super cute look - you should totally try it.

Fernanda's outfit (last link in Ornella's response) inspired me to wear a tie. Although masculine inspired, it is still very feminine. I just wore it last week and got lots of compliments.

I've worn a men's tie around my waist as a belt but i don't think i've wore one around my neck yet. Glad you got some links to check out!

As a bigger woman (on top especially) I don't feel comfortable yet with the look although I'm dying to try it. I wore one for years waitressing so that adds to my reluctance. I do have a great bowtie, but that is way to advanced for me. Great links are provided.

I love the fact that the tie is a Liberty print, which makes it feminine even in this outfit. Also, not being able to knot a tie properly takes away from the masculine element.

I think the main thing is to "own" the look and be comfortable in it. I have not worn a real man tie yet (my hubby does not have them so I have no source but I did wear scarves tied like ties inside the collar.

@ Girl X: I just looked through the outfits on your website, and I have to say, the cross-body necklace thing is way cool! I would probably look pretty silly wearing a similar thing but I'm going to experiment with it for sure!

I just started thinking about ties as I came across one of my husband's in the donation box. He never liked it, but I love the pattern, so I rescued it thinking that I could create some sort of craft with it. And it just dawned on me that *I* could wear it myself! Duh!
