How to wear a necklace with a scarf

I have been wearing scarves and enjoy the interest they bring to an outfit. What is the best way to combine a necklace (long ones, short pearls) with the scarf?

That's a good question... Angie had an ensemble recently that involved a scarf and pearls... at least in my mind, she did. The pearls peeked out below the scarf, the scarf tails were tucked...

I realize this in not the answer you want to hear, but I think it is often not worth it to wear both, especially if they compete. A scarf can easily get tangled in a necklace, and if the scarf is tied in any way, the necklace won't be visible much anyway. I generally choose one or the other, but not both. An exception might be a very fine choker-style necklace, but even then...

I wear a necklace under a scarf when I expect that the scarf will come off. For instance, I usually take my scarf off in the office but put it back on when I go out for lunch. When I wear both I don’t worry about the necklace showing.

I'm looking for photos -- there are a couple ways I've done this and liked it. It's better illustrated than if I try to explain in words.

I like doing this because if I get warm and take off the scarf, I still have a necklace for interest at the neckline.

I agree that I generally choose one or the other unless I think the scarf might come off. Otherwise it seems like a waste of effort.

I found a few examples of when I have done this. It tends to be with a scarf wrapped more closely at the neck and a longer pendant that hangs lower and is visible under the scarf. It's a more maximal look than I usually do, but when the mood strikes, I enjoy it. I don't really have issues with them getting tangled.

Janet - Thanks for the photos! I've never worn both together - I usually do one or the other. However, I have plenty of long pendants that I could experiment with.

I don't consider myself a"maximal" person, but do wear necklaces with scarves a lot. Usually long pendants under scarves wrapped more closely around my neck, just like Janet said, and usually over a bright solid-color sweater for a winter uniform of sorts. My pendants are not very big and I never have tangling issues. Well, not yet.

I think it helps if the pieces -- both scarves and necklaces -- aren't too delicate and have some weight to them. That way they hang without shifting around a lot and risking tangling. Really fine chains are probably not the best idea for doing this.

I also just wear both without thinking too much about it. Sometimes the necklace is hardly visible underneath the scarf, which I don't mind, and then I still feel 'accessorized' when the scarf comes off inside;-)

I have worn fairly thick pearls in the space above a doubled infinity scarf, and long necklaces with scarves also.
