How to tell if boots look dated

l'll post pictures, but I have several pairs of vintage boots (60s and 70s)... I love them but can't tell if they look dated. What IS the difference between vintage and dated?

Oof it's a fine line.

Generally I'd say that anything that is good quality and from the 60s or 70s will be vintage rather than dated. Whether it's a fashionable style of vintage is more about what shape or colour is enjoying a resurgence. At the moment, the chunky heeled 70s disco style platform is an emerging trend (see Jeffrey Campbell Lita), but the finer, pointier late 70s shape is more prevalent and less of a statement. I think any pair of boots that survive ~40 years in good shape deserve to be called Vintage!

well, classic styles (the less the detail) would last longer. But some extreme trendy would definitely look dated. For example, the motor boots (all the buckles) are so hot right now, I predict that in 10 years, they WILL look dated, if one is wearing them with activities other than outdoors "riding"-ish activities, they will look totally off pairing them with a dress and jacket like we do now.

I think from the 80s, those big square toes with super big chunky heels would look "dated" if wearing them now.

cloud9, one pair is a red suede square-toed chunky heeled knee-high. I have got to just take some photos.

Yes - please take photos. I have several pairs of black boots from the '90's - in great condition, fit me perfectly and are comfy. I keep taking them in and out of the "donate" bag - I just can't decide!

AG, so glad you asked this question bc i've been pondering the same thing with a pair of boots given to me by my grandmother. Our best guess is they're from the 80's. It's a fairly classic style though i know similiar styles today look fresher.

I have worn them out though....I don't really have an adequate fall/winter shoe wardrobe so I couldn't continue to not wear them.

Seeing the answers posted here, mine still are a question mark. Guess I'll be posting a pic of mine as well.

Oh, lady, if my grandma had given me shoes I would save them even if I couldn't wear them, just because of that. Were they a gift (new) or had they been hers?
