How to rock up this dress?

Hi All,

I'm new here and wondering if I could get some advice on a dress I'm supposed to wear for an upcoming wedding. The dress I've bought is this: http://www.asos.com/Hope-and-I.....int/Prod/p

My style tends to be rock and artsy, with lots of black so this dress is a huge change! I was thinking about a statement necklace but I also think it looks elegant without. Also, not sure what more to do since the pattern is already quite a statement. How would you accesorize this so that it's a bit more rock and roll? Just to give some background, I like the styles of Alexa Chung, Zooey Deschanel so quirky yet dark.

I can relate to your style goals. I suspect I'm a lot older than you so I try to tone down my rocker side a bit, but I tend to keep it simple and let the "pretty" side of my style speak a little more when it comes to styling a dress like this, especially for an occasion like a wedding.

I usually stick to adding some edge in the form of shoes and/or jewelry. There is already a lot going on in a printed dress, so I would stick to one statement piece of jewelry that adds a bit of your style -- a bold cuff or ring? -- and then some great shoes and a sleek black clutch, maybe with some shine or texture.

I like the neckline as is. A lot. I agree with Janet that a ring or bracelet would add to the look.

I would love to hear from others on the board, but I would guess that a pair of rockstud/rock star type shoes might suit your aesthetic and the dress. I have seen several brands around -- I would probably chose a nude color. If that turns out to be too much, then a more simple nude shoe or metallic.

I liked the idea of a moto with this but would have to see it to be sure.

BrieN beat me to it -- I was just going to come back and post that some studded pumps or sandals would be great. my Rockstuds are my go-to shoe for dressy occasions. I'll be wearing a floral dress for my stepson's wedding this summer, and the Rockstuds will definitely be on my feet!

thanks all so far for responses. I have a moto jacket so was thinking of going that route. And BrieN, yeah agree, I may leave the neckline and go for rings or a bracelet. And love the stud heels!

Yes to the moto idea. If full-on leather seems a bit in-your-face for a wedding, there are tons of knit motos around at the moment -- more delicate and more comfortable. Scrunch up the sleeves of the jacket and add a big, non-delicate bracelet.

ETA: I realized after posting this that I should have said my own views on weddings do not parallel the mainstream. I have not much patience for the level of orchestration that seems to go into things at the moment ("We'd like all the guests to wear pale grey and yellow, so the photos will look coordinated...") but that's me and I'm not the one getting married.

Just saying, you know the bride better than I do. If she is someone who would faint at the thought of a guest showing up in a moto, well, maybe save that look for the next time you wear this dress.

I'd love to see that floral dress with a black bra peeking out. And edgy shoes for sure, booties would be fab. Love the dress you've found! Have fun with it.

That's a beautiful dress and lovely for a wedding. I think Zoe and Alexa would wear closed toe pumps with a little handled handbag.

Yes to the Rockstuds (I have a fake pair) or a chunky perforated open-toed bootie if you want to be more casual.

You could also try finding a statement skull ring and a studded clutch, and maybe even a lace pashmina to tone down the edge.

That dress is beautiful and quite dramatic. Like others, I'd go for a cuff or earrings, clutch or footwear that gives a nod to your rocker side. The rock stud style shoes would work well. Have fun.

I'm not a print person, but I have to say that is a lovely dress. All it needs, really, is some simple accessories, as already suggested by others. Have a great time!

Rachy is dead right. Top handled bag is definitely a Zoe look. Maybe Alexa too in this context. It's a super-sexy dress, so way, way out of my experience and comfort zone , but if I could wear it, I'd pair it with a luxe, drapey black or stone leather jacket and Janet's Rockstud heels. I'd go easy on the jewellery - that kind of shoe with that dress is making a bold enough statement as it is. I'd go with tiny, diamante skulls, or studs echoing the shape of the stud in the shoe , (in the way of an earring ) and a similar style of cocktail ring . Alexa eyeliner, bold lips, nails done in a contrasting colour and undone hair. Man I wish I could wear things like this!

Hi All,

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input, super helpful! In the end, I think I'm going to go the Alexa/Zoe route and do closed black pumps which have a vintage look with a black top handle bag. Also, I will wear the motojacket I think the bride will be cool with it since she has worn motojackets to weddings herself. And even though I thought I wouldn't mess with the neckline, I found this super awesome gold chandelier style choker that really gives the outfit the overall look I want. I tried to find pics online but dont see any! Going to keep trying though cause it's an awesome necklace. I got it from Top Shop's vintage jewelry collection.
