How to grow out gracefully

Sorry for my serial posting today.

I absolutely hate my hair right now. This is my least favorite length: too long to be a cute little bob and too short to be an elegant shoulder length. I kind of want to shave my head and start over. Please give me some ideas so I don't have to resort to that. I just don't know what to do because it's not really long enough to put up.

DON"T shave do you wear headbands Maya, I love them. They can add such dimension and fun to any style and any length. And good at keeping awkward length hair out of your eyes. I wear a subtle one almost every day.
Can you pull it back into a sleek, albeit tiny, ponytail? then add a headband?

Taylor, I do have headbands, but my hair tends to get messy and flat at this length They end up looking juvenile instead of looking sleek and cute. I guess maybe my real problem is that I can't keep my hair neat.

I can put my hair into a tiny pony but my shorter layers fall out.

I pulled my bangs ("bangs" really since I don't have them anymore) back and clipped them with a tiny claw clip today. I used enough hairspray that, if someone lit a match 50 feet away, it would have set me alight.

So no, I don't mind product :p But I don't like it when it makes my hair too greasy or heavy. I want it to still feel like hair.

I think the reason I have such a hard time feeling polished is because I have about a million baby hairs sprouting at any given time, around my hairline and everywhere else. It looks so messy. I just haven't found an effective way to tame them. When I get my hair cut, they are able to blowdry most of them smooth, but I have no idea how they do it.

I was going to suggest putting the front up and leaving the back down, but you just did that. It looks cute if you can get a little volume into the part you put up. Are you growing your bangs out now?

Maya, if your hair is in layers, you can pretty easily get some extra oomph of volume and length with some yes-it's-my-own-hair-I-bought-it.

I started to write a detailed explanation of a very cost-effective and easy way to do it, but it's getting long and complicated. I think I'll PM you with it unless lots of other people here are dying to know my extension secrets.

I don't know if you will be able to imagine this style but it was how I used to manage the in between stage. I do have pictures but they are pre digital and the quality is shocking.

Section your hair into three and use a band to form three ponytails at the back of the head. Twist a piece of the hair from a ponytail quite tightly until it form a small bun, pin in place with a kirby grip, repeat a further two or three times for each ponytail. the result will be a pretty up do. Because the style need not be perfect I could do this style in five minutes.

Didn't you say that people mistake you for a Muslim? How about a Jackie O style headscarf for a while? I remember reading an article from the 50s and I was jealous at the advice to just toss a scarf on to look polished. Wouldn't that be nice if it was stylish again?

For blowdrying hair smooth, my stylist told me to use a directional nozzle (I think that's the term, it's the flat narrow attachment). Then you direct the air how you want your hair to lay (so point the nozzle down and parallel with your hair). I also can't live without a shine serum, it really helps keep my hair smooth.

I don't think I'd want to confirm anyone's stereotypes, and the world isn't exactly friendly towards Muslims at the moment (plus it'd be weird to wear a religious headscarf and short dress like I would probably do). I do tie my scarf around my head when it rains to keep my hair dry though.

I already do the nozzle thing and it doesn't work. I'm not very adept at blowdrying my own hair. My brushes all either cause too much tension, so I can't "roll" my hair around them, or not enough tension, so the air from the blowdryer just tosses it around. I don't know if I'm making any sense. I just got home from work and it's 9:00 and I am all discombobulated.

Maya, I have all those little hairs too. Today I had my hair cut and the stylist used a flat iron on my already straight hair to smooth out all those little hairs. It's amazing! So much so that I bought a flatiron. The only other product she used was a styling mousse on the wet hair and a light non-stiff hair spray at the end. It's terribly windy here today, and even after being blown to pieces there are no little hairs popping up.

I use an iron too and it doesn't help I don't know if I'm using the right temperature or what but I don't want to go too hot. Lately my hair has been feeling strawlike and looks very limp and flat so I took a break from the iron today. It feels much better. Mine is ceramic and tourmaline or something, and it gets rave reviews on folica.com, but I dunno, it doesn't work for me. I wish Renata and Taylor could teleport here and give me a detailed tutorial. My fuzzies are mainly at the roots which are hard to iron.

You can see them clearly in this picture. And that is taken at quite a distance. It's worse up close!

Maya, We all lose 50 to 100 hairs a day, sometimes more. These little hairs, sometime referred to as *the frizzies* are simply replacement hairs due to natural shedding. They are super short because they are super young..at a half in. of growth per month, you can literally determine the age of those hairs by where the are on your scalp.

They don't want to lie down because there is no weight to them. I would suggest to use the teeeeniest amount of a palmade type product as a *finishing* tool, this is what I do with my clients at the end of a service but I caution too much will look greasy, so the smallest amount vigorously rubbed between your palms and with a light touch put those little hairs in place...I hope that helps:)

Thanks Taylor. I've never bothered with pomade because, as you say, it's greasy and heavy especially for my fine hair. But perhaps it's just a matter of using the right amount, as you suggest. Aren't you smart
