How to get rid of clothes that you don't like.

I bought some new pants for my son in late November. He is tall for his age and seems to grow out of pants every 6 weeks or so. He is also VERY picky about his pants : he won't wear jeans or khakis of any kind. Which is the majority of what are in boys' and mens' departments. So I really went to a lot of trouble to find something warm that he would like. I also got him 3 pairs of lightweight gym pants for after school sports. Well despite all the freezing cold weather, all he seemed to wear were the gym pants. I haven't washed the others since early Dec. and I keep asking where they are. He finally came clean yesterday.

He balled up three pairs and put them under his bed !!! I made him go under there, but because he is a big kid, he got stuck. Then our 8 lb dog climbed under and kept licking his face. When I hadn't seen my son for a while, I finally went in and found him stuck with the dog. : )

Oh, this is hilarious! How typically "boy" to stuff clothes under his bed and pretend they don't exist!

My son wears PJs to bed. He loves hanging around in the evening in his pajamas, and he spends half the weekend in them if he is allowed. So I was flustered when I did laundry and put away all sorts of pajamas for his brother and sister but none for him. Where had they gone? Well, it turns out that he doesn't like to actually SLEEP in them, so off they go when he goes to his room, and they - like your son's pants - were all under his bed!

How did you get DS out from under the bed? Is he stuck on wearing athletic pants for now? One of my boys went through a phase where that's all he wanted to wear, too, but he's back to wearing regular pants now.

Echo...so it is a boy thing ! That is just hilarious about the PJs. LOL !!! Why would one wear pjs to bed ? DUH. But how do they stand it ? One morning it was -25 F while he was waiting to get onto the bus. I guess it is youth.

I had to lift the bed up a bit to get him out. : )

And now I'm glad my stepson's bed lies directly on the floor, with no bed frame or legs!

If I could teach the males in my life to pick up dirty socks from the floor, I do believe I would faint with happiness. Especially since certain parties wear their socks multiple days without washing. *shudder*

So funny!!

My daughter has a different trick.

She puts the clothes she does not like in the closet. And then she places a large pillow and an even larger stuffed tiger directly in front of the closet door so that it is virtually impossible to get into it. (She is 14, by the way!)

Meanwhile, she leaves all the clothes she DOES like in her bureau drawers.

I guess she, like your son, subscribes to the Out of sight, out of mind theory.

You know what... I bet he was hoping that by the time you noticed, he had outgrown them...

That is a great story, especially when the dog entered the picture. The dog must have been thrilled to get such unlimited access for kisses!

When my oldest niece was growing up and visited us on the holidays, my mom and I could always tell when she didn't love something she had received as a gift. It would get conveniently "left behind" when she went back home.

Conversely, now when she is at my house and borrows a t-shirt or sweatshirt that she likes, it will conveniently go home with her!

Suz, my son is 12. So not too far from your daughter. I guess it is just a tween/early teen thing. That is very funny. Generally, it is the kind of thing that makes me so frustrated, but it can also be so funny if we step back. It is a tough age as they try to get independence yet still wear clothes that we buy for them.

Janet, hahahaha ! But it isn't just males. I find my 10 year old daughter's socks everywhere. It drives me absolutely nuts. She claims her feet get hot and she needs to take off her socks immediately when that happens. : ( Great story about your niece. Hopefully we get a little less transparent as we get older about things like that.

La Belle, LOL !!!! Yes, wouldn't that have been convenient and brilliant ! The dog part was really hysterical because my son was actually giggling when I found them. Dogs are so awesome. A cat would've have been under there saying, " Seriously, WHAT are you doing."

My 2 younger daughters (6 and 8) have a bad habit of putting dirty clothes back in their drawers - leading to frustrations for me when I can't find anything clean. It is only one of many clothing /untidy room issues with them (I currently have a sign on my fridge saying "no breakfast until you have picked up the clothes on your floor" because they get a floordrobe in a single day) and not part of a calculated plan!
Being girls they would (and do) express their problems with clothes verbally and at length.....

LOL. I guess it's a teen thing Isabel. I think my mom was glad that we had uniform at that age

BTW regarding the cold. I see teens here displaying there ankles and in cons when it was snowing here a week ago

Isabel, wait until your daughter needs bras! My bras were always uncomfortable as a teen (they still are & now I know way more about sizing), so I'd take it off as soon as I got home, which usually meant I was in the living room. So I'd just stuff it behind a throw pillow on the couch, and of course forget about it when I went to my room later. My dad in particular was driven nuts by that habit!

E, I cracked up at your post !!!! I won't be laughing in a couple of years when it actually starts happening here. But you remind me that we were all kids and did "our" stuff. Thank you ! LOL

Ramya, ooooo, you post made me cold just thinking about it. Years ago, it was very fashionable for kids to wear slip on sandals ( thongs) year round here. Thankfully, it has cycled out. I have threatened my kids before that they would wear uniforms ( though the school doesn't require it ) if they couldn't get it togehter.

Anne, BRILLIANT !!!!! My daughter doesn't even try to hide the clothes. LOL
I LOVE your idea. I think that I am going to implement that at night. No iPad or fun stuff after homework until outfit for next day is picked out and NO clothes on the floor anywhere.

In the end, this is a first world problem for us. They have too many clothes. If they had less, they would respect them more...I think. Who knows. : )
