Well, I have the very opposite type, and I find it hard to wear tunics over leggings or skinny pants because a tunic ( meaning = very short dress, not a typical dress length) cuts me exactly in half, or thereabouts. Yes, it covers rear, but without high heels, then I have no legs left. That is also why although I need longish tops because my torso is long (if wearing untucked with typical pants ) I have to avoid not only tunics but tops that are straight and end at very low hip--just cut me in half. If the hem is asymmetrical or high-low or shirttail or cocoon, sometimes that will work.
So I'm thinking it would be the opposite for you; you could wear very long tops because you'd have a lot of leg left, even with flats. So if you like tunics and long sweaters, over relatively fitted jeans or pants, those probably will look good on you.
Another idea is, if you are trying some wider-leg pants (not necessarily crazy-wide) but they are reasonably fitted in the hip (meaning not bulky there) and possibly high-waisted, instead of tucking in tops, which give you a short torso look, you could wear your tops untucked ending at the mid-low hip (not as long as a tunic), whereas for me, the purpose of the high-waisted pant is so I can tuck in my tops or wear a short top to shorten my long torso relative to legs.
Plus if you see Angie's blog today, you could wear those cropped pants, wide-ish, and the longer fuller layers, because you would have the leg length, even with flats. A lot of the styling choices with the ankle straps and color choices is done to help mitigate any leg-shortening or "shtumpy" looks when things are chopped up by tops, cropped length, shoe etc. People with naturally longer leg proportions have a "leg up" (!) on that look without having to be so careful.
There is that "rule of thirds" which isn't rigid, but speaks to the proportions you are thinking about.
