How to convert a scarf into a poncho??

I have not yet found the right poncho but have some large scarves and would like to try making an over-the-head poncho with at least one of them. Has anyone seen any good tutorials or have advice?

Angie, I want a slim poncho without lots of volume ( I like structure), an assymetrical hem probably, and nothing too heavy. Also on the short side. The ones I've tried overwhem me. Ideally I like the cashmere knit, but don't want to invest too much in a piece that may not work out under a coat and as something with which to experiment.

I started the same thread a few weeks ago. I googled and saw some options a while back. I haven't cut mine yet either, my blanket scarf is 1.4 meters x 1.4 meters so pretty big. Someone suggested on my thread to do a trial run with a scrap of fabric the same size - seemed like a good tip to me. Please keep us posted and I will do the same.

I have a couple of ponchos that I bought at an art fair that are essentially 50x72 pashminas that are folded in half lengthwise, then partly seamed up one side, leaving an opening for the neck. I love them so much as they are lightweight and very versatile in how I wear them, not only in terms of outfit creation but because they can be worn asymmetrically or belted or whatever. When I was working in an office, I wore them to stave off the AC chill; I find them perfect for fall days when it's chilly in the a.m., warm in the afternoon, then coolish after dark.

I shopped hard to find one that seemed shorter and lower volume, since I'm 5'1" and I don't want to look like a mushroom. I am also hoping that it hugs my shoulders, and doesn't tent out. I don't want to lose the length of my legs, if I can help it, if that makes sense. I don't see why I can't adjust it around to make it asymmetrical, if it is more flattering that way. I think my next project will be to see how overwhelming (or not) a blanket scarf is on me. I don't want to look like I have the flu and just waddled into the kitchen for a restoring cup of tea! I will be very interested to see the results of your experiments in this area.

Thankyou, Angie. You are right. With so many ponchos out there, I need to try more. Our mall AT closed recently but I hope there is still one in the area. It looks very promising.
Word Lily, I want to try some of the ideas that you linked to, especially the one that doesn't involve cutting or sewing.. Thank you and everyone fir the ideas and links.

Bijou gave mi a good description of the patter of her poncho there, it seems easy peasy, but haven't done yet, I asked as I couldn't identify the one I likes(asymmetric) with those on racks, hangers, or online picties here available in my neck of the woods.

Lyn, I saw your post. We will have to help each other as we both want something with less volume and not too long. I tried on some inexpensive ones today that were open in the front but they were not good. The fabric is going to make a difference.

I made one today out of a cashmere pashmina that my mother had brought for me from Isreal. I did as someone else mentioned and folded it lenghwise, and sewed up the seam on one side only, leaving about 12 inches or so, from the fold, for the neck opening. I wore it out today and it worked really well!

I wore it in fall weather over a cashmere crew neck sweater. The "poncho"has more something of a boatneck, and an assymetrical hem, which I loved! You need to use a scarf that is a weight you like. I have some cotton ones that would have been great in the summer, but I only got this brilliant idea this morning. LOL

I didnt even lock the sewing seam, so if I want to I can easily unpick the sewing and get my scarf back. (I have the feeling it's going to be living it's life as a poncho now though. I have plenty of other scarves!)

Try it, you have nothing to lose.

Kim, thank you for telling us about your success. I am away from home but am looking forward to trying this. I have some scarves that are almost too much to wear as scarves that may work well as ponchos.
