How to clean handles of leather handbag?

Does anyone have a technique for cleaning the handles of a leather purse? The rest of my purse is just fine, but the handles are getting really grimy. It's a red leather Kate Spade, and my attempts thus far, with lexol leather cleaning have not been very helpful. Advice, please!!

I was googling purse forums, and found that the method that worked well for me on a pale matte leather purse, a magic eraser, wasn't recommended as it's abrasive.

But I'd try googling or searching these forums.

Do you have a local cobbler or maybe a dry cleaner? He/she may be able to tell you.

I hesitated to post this, but I had a Kate Spade bag that I washed. In warm soapy water. I used Ivory dish soap, rinsed very very well, stuffed with towels to dry, and conditioned liberally (with Lexol conditioner), starting before it was completely dry. It came out great.

If I had a cobbler I would ask there, but that's a major hole here in Tucson....Thanks to those who weighed in....I was considering the solution offered by Jaileen, as I thought about it yesterday afternoon, and feel even better about it since you tried it. Nothing else has worked, and I love that purse, but the handles feel icky. I'm heading out and will look at some stores in the shoe area and see if anything looks reasonable, but even online sources weren't very helpful....
