During my closet clean out, I have noticed that some of my summer canvas shoes in light colors do not look that clean. How do you clean yours (e.g. light colored Converse, Keds)?

Would a real hand wash be possible or would it ruin the shoes? I am thinking of soaking them with some mild detergent, scrubbing like crazy with old toothbrush, rinsing and drying.
