How to be slick?

I am such a goof ball on the styling front so hoping fabbers can share some advice - which is probably quite simple. I am 'growing' my hair so I can tie it back to do the bright lippie/big earring thing. Its now long enough that I can now tie it back but still have those wispy and short bits that flop out and look untidy until it gets long enough to tie back totally. What do I use to hold those few wispy bits back? Hairspray? Is there some sort of gel or lacquer? Thanks so much for your ideas. This is kind of what I want to be able to do...

I'm no hair expert, but since my daughter started dancing, I have discovered you can do a lot with hairspray!
Is your hair thick enough to let you bobby pin some of the wispy bits back? Your inspiration pic does show some hair coming loose, though I don't know if you can get it to stay like that all day. Maybe some volumising mousse to give that slightly messy look, but keeping those shorter bits held back.
Good luck - growing out a style always takes ages!

Hmm, well I have my hair tied back today and my hairstyle is shaped at the front and I can never get it into the hair band. I just use good old hair grips(bobby pins). The thin brown ones that are just like a folded bit of wire. Brown blends in with my hair, but you may be able to get light coloured ones for blond tones.

Watching with interest. My hair never does as it's told. Each strand is baby-fine and resists all efforts to be tamed.

My hair is very smooth and because of this it always slips out of rubber bands. Hair powder has been a game changer for me. This brand is at target and ulta, there are other salon brands. It takes very little product, and gives your hair volume and grip. Your inspiration pic almost looks like the front was teased a bit for volume and hold too. I often notice heavily processed hair in these sort of styles because the processing adds a texture and roughness to the hair that makes it hold in position better than smooth, virgin hair.

An updo is a great solution to hot days, elegant events, and, well, getting your hair out of your face when you exercise, clean, or paint.

Sometimes I just embrace the fringe. I will part my hair on the side, then brush the back half of the part back -- so the part is only visible on the front half. Then, I pull my hair back to the nape of my neck and secure with a wide barrette (my favorite) or a hair tie. I can use a pin or two and some hairspray to make my side bangs stay put, but I often just embrace the fringe --- I deliberately release a bit of hair on one side, which creates a bit of an asymmetrical look. Then, if any bits come out accidentally, it's all good!

My fringe is a bit too long for this look at the moment, but you can get the idea -----

More boho than sleek, but I do twists and braids like these to tame my growing out hairs.

Thank you everyone. I am going to grab some hairspray next shoppong trip and dig out my hairpowder and bobby pins. I think that combo will work and allow me to do a bit of lift etc. I just have the plain covered elastics for now. I got these transparent spirals but there is not enough hold for the length. Here are more of inspiration pics... As you know so much of my year here is hot. And I have always wanted to do tie back here so that is a goal for 50. Xx

I recently saw a youtube video on messy buns -- and the woman was using either an eyebrow gel or a mascara gel. It was clear and whatever the product -- it had an mascara brush that she combed through the wisps. I think it was eyebrow gel.

OK, I think I need to get my eyes checked, because I thought your post was entitled "How to be sick?"

I have seen bloggers do what you are looking for by spraying with hairspray and then running a fine-toothed comb through the side hairs to comb them back. This gets all the little wispy hairs away from the hairline. However, if your hair is like mine, this will not be enough. In that case, I would get some bobby pins the color of your hair and use them to hold the hair back. It's most secure if you use two bobby pins on each side, criss-crossing them over one another, so that they are really anchored in place. I think that you can google for tutorials on how to use bobby pins but hide them so they aren't so apparent (?); that might be helpful.

Honestly I think it can have a lot to do with your hair's texture and what type of growing stage it's in too. I would try hairspray, but be careful as too much will leave you with greasy hair. :-/

Thanks for starting this thread and for Traci for writing in about hair powder. I'd never heard of this and am keen to try it!

I have horrible wispy hair. It helps not washing every day. Also helpful is a prep spray like Bumble and Bumble's - or another thing I do is water down leave-in conditioner and spray that on after washing my hair. I'm going to try a no shampoo shampoo my hair cutter is liking. You get your hair wet still - but I guess the cleansing agent is less stripping. Not a detergent or something.

My hairdresser used volumising powder at my last haircut. I have short, fine hair, and the powder does add lots of texture. Dry shampoo seems like a milder version of it.

If you have fine hair and want texture, try Big Sexy Hair powder. Just a wee bit is all it takes. I used to use it when my hair was shorter. It won't slick hair down, though. For that, you need hair gel or spray.

So I went and bought some hair powder today. The packet says to use on dry hair.
Should I use it before or after a hair straightener?

Hmmm I don't know. If you bought the Big Sexy Hair Powder Play in the red container, you sprinkle it on and then work it in. My instinct would be to use the straightener afterwards. Again, though, I honestly don't know.

I always use the powder after all my styling is done. It grips the hair together in a way that I find makes it hard to style after.

I brushed it smooth, then did powder, tied it up, then sprayed. And it lasted all day! See am and pm below. Thanks for your advice, would never have thought to do the powder. I think as it gets beyond just reaching the elastic, I can use the powder to give a bit more puff. Yes the powder makes it a bit sticky so I would straighten first.

Turned out really pretty! I've always had wispy pieces. My stylist told me the hairs at the front of my head are fragile and break. I use hairspray...even when I'm working out to keep the pieces down.

You look great! I too use a combo of hair powder and then hairspray for up-do-days. I don't really understand hair powder or what it does or how it works, but really it seems to be magic stuff!
