How to add bags to my collection

Hi Angie-

I'm a huge fan of your blog. I was wondering if you had any advice on how to match a bag to a particular outfit. How does a crossbody add to a look versus a clutch? What about a satchel versus a hobo? And then how can the color or pattern of the bag affect the overall look? I have about one bag in each category (everyday, work, summer/winter and dressy) but I'm trying to pick my next bag(s) based on my style goals and the look I want to achieve rather than what happens to stike my fancy.

From your blog, I know you love bags so I would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm not Angie, but I like your plan to pick your next few bags based on your style goals. I'd recommend trying different bag types (crossbody, clutch, etc) with your outfits to see which silhouette you like best. IMHO, crossbodies are more casual than clutches and satchels.

Just to let you know, Angie may not be able to comment right now as she is taking a short forum break.

I certainly can't answer for her, but I'll bet she would say that a daytime clutch is more "on trend" (right now) and a crossbody can be practical and (often) a bit more casual. A satchel, being more structured than a hobo, would be less casual and so work better with a classic or modern classic style, whereas a hobo might appeal to someone with a boho tendency. On the other hand, sometimes it is nice to "play against type" with one's bags, so a woman who favours curvy, romantic shapes in her clothes might like a crisp no-nonsense bag, or one who likes clean structure in her clothes might like a slouchy bag for a bit of contrast.

Just wanted to say, I second the notion that you have the right idea of how to pick your next bag. I have an apple green designer bag (caught my fancy, was on sale) that I have NO idea how to style.

Thanks for the advice! It makes sense that clutches and satchels are more formal and hobos and crossbody are casual. Based on this, I think I am going to look for a more formal daytime bag, maybe a satchel. Don't think I can do the daytime clutch with a toddler. I also like the suggestion about playing against type.

Wow, this was my first question and I really learned something.

I would urge you to consider a satchel with an option of a shoulder strap - it's quite useful if you have to commute, or need to have your hands free, even for a short period of time!
