How SYC became NAS Angie's picks: Theory and Smythe

Dang y'all, it happens every year: I stick my fingers in my ears, try to distract myself, and avoid the internet, and I still end up poring over NAS and YLF. HA. I blame every one of you for looking so amazing in your finds that it was impossible to resist!

In an effort to behave, I swore to consider only a few items this year. Unfortunately, they're big ticket pieces. Here are some reviews and a plea for unflinching honesty from you all:

Theory 'Sala' top
#1-2. This is just as breezy and elegantly simple as Angie said it was. The silk is lightweight but substantial, and the zipper is functional. Zip it up for work and slightly further down for play. What fun! My only reservation is I have a huge poison eye for grinning. I think it's going to be an issue here. In the pictures, I tried it with a black camisole to see if that would help but I'm not sure it looks right. Thoughts?

Smythe houndstooth jacket
OH MY. This ticks every one of my boxes. Equestrian, rounded hem, slight peplum formed by double vents, beautifully made. *faints* However. The pattern is very "corporate" and as I'm on the classic end of Modern Classic, I'm not sure I can edge this up. It's going to look incredible on Angie, but I may end up looking too office-y. So there's that.

Next, sizing: I usually wear a 4 but ordered a 6 and an 8 knowing the brand runs small. I'm feeling very little difference in the shoulders; the difference is mainly in the chest and waist. Pictures 3-6 are the size 6. You can see when I button it up, it pulls quite a bit. I rarely button jackets so that's not a huge issue, but it might still be a hair too small? Pictures 7-9 are the size 8. It seems to fit fine. I'm likely overthinking the fit as it has to be perfect for the price. What say you all?

I think they both look amazing on you. I hope you weren't expecting to be talked out of them. It's hard to tell on the size of the jacket since you don't show the 8 buttoned up, but the difference seems quite minimal. I'd go for whichever is comfortable and allows you to wear whatever you may want to wear underneath. I tried it in a 10 (I'm normally a 6 or 8 in jackets) and probably could have gone up to a 12, but the fit is much better overall on you. I realized after trying it that it's a little too staid for my style, but I want a more dramatic equestrian cut with a longer back, and probably in a solid charcoal like Angie's jacket. So if you're worried about it looking too corporate, I would suggest playing with some stylings before you decide.

Beth, would you try the Sala in the cranberry? That would minimize the grinning.

The jacket is very you! I do think the larger size is better, but that could be me hating to feel constricted in the shoulder area.

I prefer grey under a white shirt, it usually shows less through the fabric, maybe try grey? Or a nude color tank?
The jacket is gorgeous, and the elbow patches give it a funky vibe even though it's a classic print. I prefer the larger size on you both for the shoulder and sleeve length.

OMG, these items are gorgeous!! I am so jealous...I really, really wanted to try the jacket but it sold out in my size too fast for me to nab it....

I think the larger size in the jacket is better. It's totally "you" and a great purchase. WOW.

To me, the cut of this jacket does not say "corporate" in the least, whatever the glen plaid says. (Why do they call it houndstooth, I wonder?) But at the price you will want to be certain.

LOVE the top, too. I am with April -- how about cranberry instead? Or a white cami. I do see the black one here -- but maybe that is a flash?

Janet, I need to be talked out of everything! I partially blame you for this, since you looked so wonderful in the jacket in your pictures! I also wonder if it's just too staid, though. It might be beyond my limited creativity to make it really fun.

April, I did consider the cranberry but need more light colored tops. In which case, it might just be time to get over the grinning phobia. Good to see you too...did I hear you're out of the schools now?

Suz, the cut and fabrication are so pretty, and it would look fabulous on you. See if you can stalk it?

Lisa, you have a good point with the elbow patches making it a little less office-y. I'm going to give a nude cami a try under the Theory top. It might be flowy enough that grinning is less obvious.

Love the size 6. Gorgeous on you. I would recommend NOT buttoning the jacket. EVER. Smythe blazers just do not look best buttoned.

Could you wear the blouse with different bottoms to minimise grinning? Or does it need to work w black trousers to be versatile enough for your closet? I know that if I find something that's almost perfect but has one 'poison eye' aspect, sometimes I talk myself into believing it won't matter to me, buy it/keep it, and then I never end up wearing the piece. So if you're like me, be careful there; make sure it's a solution you truly like vs one you've talked yourself into thinking you like.

Definitely the 8; the sleeve patches hit you at a better place. It may also be more comfortable for driving and over bulkier sweaters. JMHO.

The Smythe jacket is stunning, size 8 IMHO. I like the white top and I don't mind the grinning. I had a poison eye for it, but for the most part I've gotten over it.

The jacket is fantastic on you and not too corporate at all. Gorgeous - not able to assess the fit from the pictures because it is more about the feel and movement at this point, but it is smashing on you. The blouse is gorgeous too!

love the Smythe jacket on you....i think both sizes work, so its really a matter of which you feel most comfortable in. as for the corporateness of the blazer, i agree with lisa, the leather elbow patches take the blazer outside of them corporate zone. and IMO the cut of the jacket is trendier than must corporate blazers.
i also love the blouse, and don't see any grinning.

I love both pieces on you, and prefer the fit of the 8 jacket.
I second the idea of a gray cami--something dark, but not so high contrast against your skin. That often works for me with dark pants and a light top.
What we really need are dip-dye or ombre camis, don't we?! (ha ha!)

I think the jacket is spectacular on you - and I prefer size 8. Wow, I am so envious - I am WAY sized out of this brand and it may be good for my bank account but bad for my style

Both are great finds! I too prefer the larger of the two jackets. When the 8 is buttoned up, its hemline hits you at a more flattering spot, imo.

I'm not bothered by the see-through on the Theory top. But I have found that a nude cami does an excellent job of helping that.

Another vote for size 8. How does it look with boyfriend jeans or white denim?

The zipper detail in the blouse is FAB! Try different camisoles before you give up on it.
