How much to shorten bottoms? - YouLookFab Forum

Hopefully this will be my LAST post about these bottoms!

My new NYDJ leggings and jeans should probably be shortened, but I'm not sure how much. I don't want to go too short! I don't envision them being worn with heels any higher that the shoes in the pictures - SE Pettys and my new patent La Canadienne Perlas, mmmmmm .

So, I've pinned and labeled, and pinned and labeled. Your heads will probably spin with all of the pictures, but I wanted to make sure there are enough to make a judgement. As usual, it was hard to get pictures with the dark bottoms against the dark shoes, which is why I included the Pettys for contrast and used white pins.

Unshortened I think there is probably too much bunching. Have I gone too short with the pinning?

These are kind of a big purchase for me, so I want to get it right

1. Leggings with Perlas. I lost track of what pictures I had taken, so there aren't any shots of the leggings not pinned with these boots.
2. Leggings with Pettys
3. Jeans with Perlas
4. Jeans with Pettys

The jeans pinned in 4 look good to me. I have the same problem with some of my skinnier jeans--too much pooling on the bottom. I'm not sure about the other photos but my initial reaction is
1.) Looks good but wouldn't mind a little longer.
2.) Think you could go either way--pinned or as is.
3.) Pinned.

It's kind of hard because the openings are narrow and don't really fall very well over the top of the shoe. I'm wondering how much I need to shorten mine as well. I just need to figure out what shoes I will be wearing most of the time. Very interested in seeing what others think!

Yes Kelly, with the narrow openings the hems don't go any lower, but it's a matter of how much bunching is the right amount.

I'd probably wear a flat shoe occasionally too.

This is a hard one Pil. They look good either way. How many washings have the items had? To some extent, I do like the slimmer line created by the pinning (esp the jeans with the petty's) but this is the sort of thing I decide to do then after several washes the items have become too short so I dont want to steer you wrong. Since we are talking scrunch details versus walking on hems I'd be tempted to make sure the fibers had drawn up as much as they were going to before taking them in.

I like them the way you have pinned them. I do think you might want to launder them first to make sure. For reference, my taste is for some, but not a huge amount, of scrunch.

Laundering first is a good idea - unless you have already done so, and pin a little longer than #1.

Angie, Suz and Sarah, thanks! They have not yet been laundered but I always do that becore shortening. Lately I've been washing and then dry flat and don't have much shrinking that way.

Angie, were you thinking of something like 1/2" longer? Or more like 1" ?

I think they do need some shortening if they don't shrink. And taking off the bottom of the ankle, which is the narrowed point on a tapered pant, might just open up the leg enough to slide over your boot just a bit easier. My white jeans were acting just like yours, and just taking off a little (like an inch) made all the difference. They actually hang now, instead of stacking awkwardly up my legs.

Claire, good observation! I should know that given the number of pants I've shortened through the years - it just didn't register with me this go round.

I think I jumped the gun on this simply because I need to return some things to Nordstrom Rack (before my payment is due this month) and wanted to accomplish two things in this trip.
