To me, this is not a decision between the price of the less desired color and the desired color. If the color is not right, the item is not up for consideration.

Therefore, your only decision is between nothing and the item in a color you like to wear. There is no other comparison to be made in your example. Is the item in brown worth the current offer price?

Ok, i grew up with a mother who believes that paying full price is morally wrong, and so i had a wardrobe of markdown colors. They functioned, but it wasn’t the most cohesive or put together closet. It took me a long time to get over it…if you love the item and you love the brown, and its not an economic hardship, get the color you love

I 100% agree with delurked, Janet and UmmLila. And here is why:

Thank you to everyone who's chimed in! The consensus is loud and clear and the brown is on its way to me. Sometimes I am too much of a pragmatist for my own good; picking one color over others, when the function will be the same in the end, is always hard for me. I'm a little envious of those who choose the one they like best without having to think about it first!

I know well enough not to buy colors I actively dislike (I can commiserate with everyone who's stood in front of an athletic wear clearance rack rolling their eyes at all the weird pinks and purples that no one wanted to pay full price for!), but I do still fall into the trap of fine-but-not-great colors especially for gear/casual. I will send all the creamy beige oatmeal colours your way, Irina!

Jules really nailed it: "Another way of looking at this situation was the original price was too high for colours you felt meh about. But maybe it’s not too high for a colour you love."

Also, the newer version with the contrast edging around the pockets that matches the cuffs and bottoms hem looks so much better than the old version with the low-contrast pocket trim, so I guess I'm happy to reward that design tweak with my dollars.

Awesome back-to-school purchase! Yes to rewarding yourself, new design and fave color

Budget is a funny thing LaPed, I have arbitrary figures in my mind on what constitutes a reasonable price and this figure has little to do with my disposable income or bank balance.

In a case like this I would be asking, what would I need to give up to find the additional £50? If I wouldn't have to give up much (if in reality it's an arbitrary figure that's the sticking point) I would give myself permission to purchase the item at the additional price in my preferred colour.

I do what RoseandJoan said. I am looking for something similar. Patagonia's colours seem to be wrong for me lately. I am going to check the brown out.

Yes to buying the one you really want! If you buy the beige, you'll still want the brown, so you'll end up spending more in the long run. From experience!

What delurked and Jules said.
It does go both ways— get the color (brown) IF the item itself is right. Get the item IF it comes in the right color for the purpose.
I am trying to remember that more and more, because I have sometimes bought a not- best item because it’s in the perfect color, or vice versa.
At the price differences for my
“ usual” retailers and sales, the cost would be acceptable if I don’t buy more stuff than I can wear, too imaginary or too much duplicating. So that includes not- buying even some great items in great colors so that I have room to pounce on something else at another time, maybe because fit changed or style/ taste changed or found something really fun or unique that I couldn’t have imagined. Also my colors themselves have been shifting over the years.

I sometimes find myself buying the most neutral color because I think it will be the most useful but maybe if I love the color it will get more use because I love it. Glad you are getting the brown - I love the blue trim on it.

I am late, but so glad you went for the brown. I really like the way Jules put it, too.

I've been waiting for an Icebreaker hoodie in a colour I love but last year's colours are a no for me -- so I'm making do with my older ones, letting them wear a bit more, and hoping for something to show up next season. So you can tell which side I am on.

Preferences aside, my 'favourite' colour in this situation would be the one that I could pair with the most outfits (i.e. the most versatile colour), regardless of price
