How is your remote schooling going??

School started last Monday and it is going really well. The teachers are very well prepped and teaching just like in the classroom, recess is on schedule as is lunch/recess. My grandsons are in 2nd and 5th grades. The challenge the kids forgetting to put stuff back into their backpacks which is probably no different than when they are in the classroom. Testing is happening this week for group placement. If the boys do not understand they show a big red name card to be called on. And they are able to email their teachers for additional help. I am very impressed. Their other grandmother and I are splitting the week like we normally do. I hope things continue to go this smoothly.

Well that’s nice to hear! Second grade seems so young to me for online school. I mean online lessons is one thing, but online schooling another.

It is wonderful to hear about it going well! We haven't yet started school, but we intend to go back full-time, in-person. I think it is a huge mistake, but it is either go back or find another job. No one in the building seems to think we will be back for long, but there's no telling. We currently have a statewide mask mandate, but when that expires, things will REALLY get interesting. Admin has told us we can require them in our classrooms if we choose, and they will back us when (inevitably) some parents have a bird about it. But we already have a quarantine room set up for when kids get sick during the school day. We have parents who routinely send their kids to school when they're sick, so we doubt that asking them not to do that will be successful this year. But if they're running a fever or displaying other symptoms of Covid, they need to be sent home, and they aren't allowed back until they have been tested or have been out for two weeks.

This is the first week for my grandson. It is going to be a challenge with Honors classes but I have to say I am impressed with the teachers. They are trying hard to keep the kids engaged and on schedule. All school in San Antonio is online till maybe after Labor Day. I am not anxious for him to return since my daughter had Covid. I know he is ready to go back. At least the kids can “see” each other on the computer. The key I think is going to be flexibility.

I am glad it is going smoothly. We will have a 5 year old kindergartener to guide through this. He has been reading in depth on the human body lately and has lots of thoughts about my diabetes and my pancreas. I. An see that I need an education on glands,
.we. Red dome good books on the Human Body. Any suggestions? He can read anything he wants and has done research on WWII planes. I really wish his great grandfather who was in the early airforce in WWII and flew on those planes. Pre WWII he was with a small group teaching the Chinese to fly small planes.
I hope schooling with the grandchildren continues to go well. We have not started yet and things could change. He has a two year old sister who will want to be involved too. That could be a big problem. I don’t think she is quite reading yet but close. Her verbal vocabulary is amazing.
Any advice is welcomed.

Joy, for science, my boys loved the Magic School bus books when they were your grandson’s age. They still refer to the one about the immune system (Inside Ralphie: A Book about Germs.) And for general pleasure reading, they loved the Magic Tree House series, which is easy chapter books. Just hard enough for a strong young reader, but still a fast enough read that they feel a sense of accomplishment. By 1st/2nd, they had moved on to Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series.

Deb, we’re staying optimistic. Our teachers have put in a lot of time over the summer to plan for remote learning. School starts after Labor Day for us, so we’re getting our house set up for all four of us to be on Zoom at the same time.

DS#2 is starting a college program after labour day. He will be at home and remote for 6 weeks, then move to campus mid October, because there is an applied element. 2 students sharing residence apartment instead of 6, so each has their own bathroom etc. He ordered his books online Sunday, and they were delivered today.

Our numbers have been pretty good 20-25 thousand tests per day and 100 or less individuals testing positive. DS#2 is careful, and wise - so I’m not worried.

It’s another matter for the young’ us, and I know there are many parents who are still unsure what to do and how to juggle their family and work commitments.

Ours starts after Labor Day and I am dreading it. We have been asked to revise concepts from last year before school starts. Teaching writing to a rising 3rd grader is tough!

So far, so good for my college student. My high school student starts on September 3, all remote, until local infection rates are 50 infections/100,000 people for two weeks. We live in Washington state.

My 20 yr old DS is in college in Montana. He says that all students and staff are wearing masks while inside buildings, as is mandated. Outside, more like 50%, but local ordinances say no mask if you can social distance. I am pleased, and surprised to hear, that compliance is this high on a college campus. The school has said that not wearing a mask indoors is a violation of the the student code of conduct. The consequences of violation are swift and serious. Off campus parties were starting to heat up but the Unv shut them down quickly. So far, so good.

His classes are all hybrid, except for an in-person lab. Hybrid classes are taught partly in-person and part online. Usually the top half of alphabet is in-person in a lecture hall while the bottom half watches live lecture online and then they switch the next time class meets. So far, all of the lectures have been live which he much prefers to the prerecorded lectures or You Tube videos they were given last spring. School has done a great job pivoting to on-line learning. So grateful for all of those dedicated educators who have had to change the way they teach!

DH is a college professor. Despite his recent illness, he participated in a mandatory preparation seminar to support development of online learning content. I believe most colleges have done well to prepare for online learning in anticipation of needing a contingency plan.

I work in a self contained special education program for our local public schools. Our staff and teachers have been contingency planning to allow for both online and at home learning. The teachers attended a program to help them improve their online teaching approach. Our therapists have been working on ways to engage youth for their counseling sessions. It is not ideal, but I commend the creativity and persistence of the professionals who are trying their best to provide something for which they have never before had training or preparation. As the new school year approaches in our region, we are hopeful that we can do better than before if faced with the need to switch to virtual learning. I am grateful to the wonderful team of people who have remained positive and dedicated to figuring out how to cobble together a way to make our program work in an unprecedented and unforeseen crisis.

Even more so, the families deserve our appreciation and compassion for the difficulties they have experienced while trying to manage their children’s online learning while many of them are also working from home at the same time. Young children in particular do not do well with parents who have divided attention. Your children and grandchildren are lucky to have you for support!

My brother teaches at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and described enlisting his daughters' hockey teammates to participate in a practice Zoom session so he could test out the equipment in his classroom - could they hear him? See him if he is here, there? They are starting with a hybrid model - optional in person or online participation, meaning teachers have to do both. He plans to also put a camera on the classmates in the room so the onliners see them, to create a sense of full participation as much as possible.
Heart goes out to all teachers, parents, grandparents, and kids this fall. I see a lot of resiliency and creativity at work.

Our local school district started classes this week. So far, three days have been cancelled due to smoke. The nearest fire is about 25 miles away, to the west. We’ve had ash fall on our patio furniture. It feels apocalyptic.

Last school year my DD school was fully online from mid March until mid May. From mid May until end of June it was hybrid model, with parents having choice between in person and online. We opted for online. Next school year that is beginning 31. August is starting fully in person, no option for online anymore. At least for now. Even though situation is now worst than it was in May and June. But they are planning for it in the case situation deteriorates further.

Virtual learning for my two elementary boys starts the week before Labor Day (why do they start on a Thursday, and then have a three-day weekend?! Anyway...)

The district has been working really hard to try to get kids back in class, and it is clear most of the attention has been spent on that plan, rather than ironing out a solid plan for virtual to start. Right now, we have the option to send kids for two hours for JUST English and math, or have them attend virtually.

Not sure how my two are going to tolerate being on a screen for hours a day, but anything will be better than the daily 15minute teacher check-in they had in the Spring. I WFH in shifts anywhere from 3a-7p, so this will be interesting...

@nemosmom: I've read advice that kids and moms returning from maternity leave and others that have been away should start mid-week. It's too much of a shock to the system and getting up early and the like if you go all five days to begin.

My nephew started in person college-he's a freshman. Check in was 8/6. I think classes started 8/12. Due to someone he spent time with testing positive for Covid, he has been moved to a Covid dorm. Already.
The student body was all tested for Covid before this happened, if I understand correctly. I know he had been tested on campus before this happened.

Nemosmom, that's brilliant! I'm glad that overall it seems everyone is managing okay - what a crazy time!

My guys don't start back until after Labour Day ...was supposed to be 8 September, but now it looks like 10 or 11 September at the earliest ... our government has done a pretty good job managing Covid but the return to school has been a dog's breakfast, I must say ...

DS will be starting high school with a schedule of in-class learning every second day, and the rest online (both synchronous and asynchronous) and DD will be full-time ... I am prepared for it to all change anytime, and perhaps several times this year though! #wine
