How does your garden grow? Week of June 15 th.

Didn't think there would be much change in the garden from last week, but when comparing this week's pictures with last, I see that I am wrong!

The early tulips are finished, but the late ones (Queen of the Night) are still going strong. The dwarf Iris are out in full force. The garden is all purple and yellow (YES! My wardrobe signature colours! LOL!). The peony and roses (John Cabot, Iceberg) and tall Iris are budded up and soon the garden will transition to pink and purple.

I'm a bit creaky this morning, after the big job of trimming the hedge. Had to take out a mature Russian Sage as well, another victim of last year's harsh winter. Took some pictures from the sidewalk, peeping over the hedge in order to see what strolling passers by see.

Folks up here are just planting their veg. Anyone have strawberries yet?

Your gardens are lovely Carla.
I moved into a new build last summer so we are just doing the landscaping. I had a patio installed last week. The goal was low maintenance so most of the yard is patio with a wide border for trees/shrubs/vines.

We started on the corner by the circle. There are three (thornless) Toba Hawthornes, three minuet wiegela, one invincibelle hydrangea, and one birds nest spruce. The other back corner will have a gazebo and deck and I am thinking to put columnar crabapples in there with virginia creeper or kiwi vines. Kiwi might be risky in my zone 3 area.

The front yard is almost all planted and the sod around the edges and by the street is being done this week. Then a truckload of mulch is needed.

The back fence is about 75% finished but its been raining for a few days and I was in TO for work all of last week. We hope to finish the "bones" and major planting this summer.

Carla, the iris' are beautiful. Mine were don two months ago. Dianthus, I love the patio. I do not think mine has changed much.

The agapanthus blooms are just starting to open.
The second flush of the Black Cherry rose has opened.
The 'never used fountain turned mini-pond'. One of the tadpoles I got two weeks ago is now a 1/2 inch frog. I saw him on a hyacinth leaf bugging.
The ponytail palm was hit hard by out November freeze but is coming out.

The lily buds are expanding.
The black mondo grass is blooming. The green leaves are new, they will turn dark as they age.

I replaced a rose tree yesterday and will show pics when she opens.

Dianthus, there is so much potential in a virgin space! I am a fan of the patio ( vs deck) though I know folks have to work with the terrain and style of house. Your patio is so visually pleasing, even at this early stage. It will be fun to watch your garden take shape.

Deb, I envy you your long growing season. As you can tell from the start of my posts, spring comes in June, summer in July and August, fall in September and it is all over by mid October!

That is a sweet pond you have for your frogs!

I finally finished popping in my bedding plants and did some more weeding. Still not photo-worthy yet though. Give me a couple of weeks and by then the large Astilbe will be out full too.

It's great to everyone's photos. Carla, Deb, Dianthus. Tough acts to follow!

Runcarla, Thanks for starting this thread and sharing your garden. I think I also see Cypress, vetch and Japanese barberry. Is that light purple ball, an allium.
I know California native plants best. Gardening for a mediterranean climate is different than the rest of North America. Here sun or too much of it, and water tend to be the limiting considerations.

Dianthus, Lovely patio. Nice bones to your garden.

Deb, Lovely garden. Just remember to keep the mosquitos out of your mini -pond. We have fears of West Nile Virus here in Santa Clara County, CA. Frogs are such a treat!

Oh wow, tulips and even irises are long done here, even though they were late after our long harsh winter.

Here's some quick pics of our yard. Way behind on weeding and also on putting something in the little planters. We did manage to get some geraniums for the larger ones.

The azaleas and rhodos are long done blooming. The irises went quick this year. Clematis bloomed like crazy a few weeks ago and are now resting. The hostas and oakleaf hydrangeas are now in full bloom. And they've taken over the yard. Too bad hostas die back completely every winter -- we need to fill some of that space with evergreens. Day lilies are coming in now. The hydrangeas will bloom later in the summer. The mahonia (the purplish berries) are growing like mad too -- the birds eat those berries later on in the year.

I included some pics of our hangout spaces as well as the plantings.

Oh, and anyone who wants frogs -- we'll gladly send you some! They are so loud in the evening here! I think they like the pool. There was a big turtle in the pool the other day too. And the bats visit at night. Yes, lots of wildlife in the woods!

Oh, what lovely gardens you have, ladies! Janet, I specially love the action shot on 13 I used to keep a modest flowering garden, but the summers in Texas have been beastly hot and we are put on water-rationing mode early in the summer... too many plants were sacrificed and I did not replace them - I still have a few - the survival of the fittest! I'll enjoy your photos, thanks for sharing.

Janet, your gardens look beautiful! I know the feeling about hostas. I planted a bed of them at my old house and the bed looked sad during the winter. The new house has them amongst the evergreens.

We've been having strawberries, but most don't make it into the house. My son wanted his dad to have some. Here are our sugar snap peas.

Gorgeous yards and gardens! I currently live in a city brownstone (I'm definitely more of a rural girl though!) so my space is limited. I've got all sun in the front, and all shade in the back.

Thanks deb! Luckily, the pup is very good about coexisting with the plants...rarely does anything get trampled or knocked over!

Wow! I just love the diversity of what constitutes a personal,patch of paradise!

LAR101, no Cypress (emerald Cedar probs)' and vetch (maybe the creeping thyme?). I' m zone 2b!!

Janet, your garden is very informative for me. At the end of the month I leave this place and move to my new home. It is a modern home (ranch or bungalow?) situated on a ravine (!) with a walkout basement. It has a similar 'feel' to whT I see in your pics (and is growing zone 5!)

Ameelizabeth! I LOVE what city green thumbs do! Especially pocket gardens. They always seem to overflow in the most happily exuberant manner.

Carla, I am envious of your move to zone 5. I am in Winterpeg so we are very limited in what we can grow. I have the perfect place for a Japanese maple but they are zone 5 and I am in zone 3. Wah

We finished the fence last night. I will take a few pics later.

I bought 9 liatris and the rabbits found them and chomped them to 1" tall. I also picked up a climbing hydrangea and a hykuro willow. I want to buy a few more trees now that the fence is finished.

What pretty flowers everyone! Love those planters Claudia. I need some of those for the front yard. I am growing cabbages and cats. Just ate one cabbage tonight. I am so excited when something actually grows and I can eat it! The cats plant themselves in the garden every year and wait for me to come out and pet them as they roll in the dirt. You can't really tell this is a cat from the pic. but that is Felix aka Dirt Devil

The little peach Knock Out drift roses I have in pots are covered in buds and blossoms right now. So tiny and beautiful, and they smell fantastic.

The butterfly bushes are late to bloom this year, but I think in the next week the flowers in the rest of the perennial beds will reach their peaks. The coneflowers have never had so many buds and are just starting to open.

I am seeing very few butterflies so far this year... But lots of hummingbirds thankfully.

Oh, I love this thread and looking at everyone's photos. This is just the best time of the year.

I ate the first tomato this morning. It's from a very confused plant. Typically tomatoes don't ripen here until early August or so. Instead, the plant hasn't grown, and is busy producing about 4 tomatoes instead. I've just left it alone to follow its own strange destiny. There are other plants of other varieties that are behaving normally.

Janet, I'd love some frogs...they're such a good marker of biodiversity. None in the city here anymore, I'm afraid, though I grew up with frogs.
