How do you wear Red?

I LOVE the way the color red looks on my and some of my brunette friends. Sometimes I find it a bit tricky to wear. Sure shirts, cardis, and camis add the red without being to overwhelming. But what about Dresses, pants and shorts? I have given away many red items just because I felt they only went with black. Red and Black, Red and Black. There has got to be a better way to wear this fabulous color.

What types of red are you wearing - orange reds? blue reds?

You can wear red with grey or purple, with blues, with white. Have you tried fabrics with a pattern that is mostly red? Sometimes that breaks up the colour.

Red with blue, red with gray, red with muted yellow (mustard?). And of course white and cream. (I'm thinking cool red for these suggestions) For warm red I think oranges, rust, creams again, even certain shades of purple. Sorry not very good with names of colors. I think red is actually pretty versatile.

The last two have red combos (I particularly like the last one).

I actually skipped the Hinge "Chanel" jacket in red/black tweed and got the black/gray because I felt it was limited, already being paired with black. (I guess I'm not creative enough to see past the red/black pairing.)

Hi Bianca,

From the looks of your profile picture, you look fantastic in red! I have to admit; I'm with you-I'm not really big on red shorts or pants. (I had some bright red jeans back in the mid 90's-ew!) In terms of a red dress or red skirts...just like anything else, the item needs to sing to you before you take it home.

I have a new red Nanette Lepore dress that I'm picking up at the tailor tomorrow. It's my first red dress--can't wait to wear it. And upon Angie's trend recommendation, I'm going to try it with purple shoes. I have some nude shoes that will be cute, too...and of course, black. One last note about red is that it can be a nice transitional color. It doesn't scream winter or summer.

I see what everyone means by pairing w/neutrals and even doing a print w/red like my profile shot (Red w/Leopard spots!!!!)

Generally I like Red with blue undertones...NOT Tomato Red (doesn't suit my completion)

But I think Dana articulated a big concern with wearing red dresses. Shoe color? Shawls, bags....what do you wear with it. Quite frankly I never thought about purple shoes....what shade of purple might I ask?

Again, aside from red tops and red accessories, this color has stopped me from getting Red Dresses. (Did we all decide red shorts and pants are ugums?)

Shoes/bags - nude, metallic, deep purple, teal/peacock, English tan, textured versions of any of those colors (think snakeskin, etc)

The Hinge Chanel jacket looks better on me when I wear a white top and black pants rather than all black. It's more of a grey-red mix with black zipper details.

My red trench coat looks great with jeans (except my lighter blue jeans).

Someone (Tara, maybe?) had a thread recently where she wore bright red pants and pulled it off fabulously- I couldn't do it though.

I have several red summer dresses that I usually pair with white patent ballet flats.

The mention of teal by MPJ reminds me- I have a teal tshirt and my lipstick red handbag looks BRILLIANT against it

I wear red almost daily. My skin tone likes the warmer reds such as tomato red. IF you were to ask Angie, she'd say that red is a neutral. Red in my book, goes with everything. Not only do I wear lots of red with black and white, I pair it with yellow - many different shades of it, and blue. Also, for shoes and other accessories, I find I can do both silver and gold with red. I haven't tried this yet but I think red with purple looks awesome. I have a red skirt but don't think I"ll get red pants anytime soon.

I Like red with purple if it is a tomato red but not a blue red. Pure red is very intense and can make quite a statement in a dress. Red is great with an olive green. Blue red works well with taupe (which no one likes except me). Of course black and white. I also like red with chocolate brown but it sounds like you are not a brown person.

Camel is also great with red= so many things do work with red, it is always about how much of each to use.

I usually wear red with white and turquoise but sometimes also with black or grey.

Jean, a true artists reply! I've seen some fab red plus teal combos on this site; my favourite way to wear red is with pink, and the red is the accent. I too, remember the days of the red jeans...they were my fave!

You ladies are making me think....Red w/Yelllow....I'm sure you can find a way to make it look stunning but in my head I only see Ketchup and Mustard!!!!! Maybe a pale yellow. I'm sticking with true Reds. I would like to venture getting a dress at some point. Too bad I gave away my trousers/shorts.

Lots of great suggestions, here! I like to wear red with black and white, but I sometimes throw in turquoise, yellow, or blue.

I think the key to red + yellow is to use one of the colors in a smaller dose, say a handbag or shoes. Red pants + yellow shirt could be a little loud, to say the least.
