Twenty - Thirteen

Two Thousand and Thirteen

Greg says the former and I say the latter. I don't know why I say the latter. I guess it stuck from when we used to say Two Thousand and Six (2006). But we never used to say in the year One Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety Six. We would say 19-96.

Maybe I need to train myself to say 20-13.

I say Two Thousand and Thirteen in English, and Tweeduizend Dertien (Two Thousand Thirteen) in Dutch.
It's funny, 19-96 sounds completely normal to me, but 20-13 (Twenty Thirteen) very odd still. I bet we'll get used to it in a few years or so;-)

I'd say Twenty - Thirteen.

But what do we call the decade between 2000 and 2009?

The "Naughts" just sounds odd, '00s looks weird ;-).

I say Two thousand thirteen. I think it's a holdover from saying Two thousand one, etc. Twenty one or Twenty "o" one never sounded right. But I would say Nineteen Ninety-nine. Maybe I'll switch in the year 2020.

Math nerd detail: "and'" is reserved for the decimal point, as in 20.13 is said as twenty "and" thirteen hundredths.

So, 2013 should be two thousand thirteen. But twenty thirteen is okay too. However, two thousand 'and' thirteen will surely have Fibonacci turning over in his grave

"Twenty- thirteen" for me too (although as a north american, it comes out as twenny-thirteen"), just because it's the shortest reasonable option.

I've said both so far. But I do not use the 'and', making Fibonacci happy I guess lol. I think I will settle into using just twenty thirteen eventually.

Two thousand thirteen. I had no idea people were saying twenty-thirteen. I think there was something really key in our psyches about reaching a millennium, thus saying the "thousand" word for emphasis.

I mostly say 'two thousand thirteen' - no 'and,' but will sometimes say 'twenty thirteen.' I know that once we're at 2021 I'll be saying twenty twenty one - because it'll be less of a mouthful than two thousand twenty one, that extra syllable is too much!
