How do I look in black?

See picture. I'm not sure if I look great in black, just okay, or terrible. I'm wearing the same makeup as yesterday, except I'm wearing Clinique black honey lipstick this time. Thoughts? I know the lighting is bad. It's a dreary day today.

It's probably not the best neutral without lip colour, but it's not bad at all. Esp. with the white yoke on the sweater. Mostly I think you seem too happy to be a PIB (person in black). Lol

I'm probably the wrong one to ask as I like black and love fair isle sweaters...anyway, I think having the white yolk really makes this not a true black. I like this on you!

I really like the lipstick on you. Not too much, at least in the photo.
The black seems to go nicely on you and you seem to have quite a high-contrast winter-y look about you. (I have to block out the wall colour with my hands because I find it interferes with really seeing the black on you.)

I'll go back and have a look at the Burgundy sweater picture again to compare...

I think everyone looks fine in black - it's an unavoidable color in life. But I don't think this is your MOST flattering color, since you're asking.

I think a smidge more blush will help a lot. But like Una said it's not your best color. Also I find the necklace competes with the pattern on the yoke.

Thanks. You all are confirming what I've been thinking. It's not my best color, but not my worst. (You should see me in pastels. Ugh!) I only have one black sweater, one black top, and 5 pairs of black pants (out of many pairs), so no hurt feelings if you all tell me it's not that great on me. It's not like I'd have to revamp my entire wardrobe.

Annagybe, I did think about not wearing the necklace. I guess black isn't really my color if I have to add more blush.

Smittie, Clinique black honey is hands down my favorite lippie. I try other colors but keep going back to it.

I agree that you can wear black. In fact it makes your beautiful dark eyes the facial focus, but it may not be your best neutral. I'd guess the best dark neutral for you would be navy or chocolate and that black would be better than grey. Like Una said, black is almost unavoidable. You can wear it better than most.

Thanks, Joy. Angie once posted that I look great in navy, and I happen to think I do. I love chocolate, too, but only have that color in pants, shoes and boots. I imagine it would look great up near my face, but I haven't yet found a top in that color. I do use espresso brown eyeliner. I went through a phase when I was crazy about gray, but not so much anymore. Right now I have 2 pairs of gray pants, and that's it. Right now my most-used neutrals are navy, chocolate brown, and khaki (no khaki near my face, though). Taupe (gray-beige) seems to take the life out of my skin tone for some reason.

BC - I actually think you look great in black. It puts all the attention on your lovely coloring, light eyes, dark hair, clear skin with rosy undertones. Personally, love it. To me it's like black velvet in a jewelers box, the high contrast bookends your hair and sets off your features. Although monitors can be misleading, I respectfully disagree with consensus and I think you look great. But it doesn't matter what I think, it's how you feel. Not everyone enjoys embracing the darkness!!

Hmmm... looks like we don't have a consensus. I'm flexible at the moment, and can be swayed either way. I don't feel bad in black. If that were the case, I wouldn't wear it at all. I just don't know if it's one of my best colors or not. If so, it would put me in one of the deep categories of color analysis. This is essentially what I'm trying to figure out.

I think you look nicer in navy and ink then black. Dark blue brings out the rose in your complexion and the lightness in your eyes.

You could wear more blush and lippie to balance out the harshness of the black. It's actually a very effective trick - which is why it works well at night when wearing more make-up looks "natural".

I'm another one who tends to like most people in black ... I think it looks good although I am sure that navy looks great too! What do YOU like, that's the question, as others have noted. Does it feel good on you?

I definitely don't think you should feel pressured to get rid of what you have, that's for sure. And navy mixes well with black

I have never liked black directly under my chin, and I think kkards has a very good point about the fair isle making the black less harsh. That said, I certainly don't feel like getting rid of any of my black clothes or footwear.

I think you can wear black well, the white pattern does help. I liked you in the wine colour too. I would think you would be able to wear many clear/muted colours but think pastels and light warm colours would be harder (I can't see you in peach or camel for example).

Blues of all sorts, lots of greys, lots of reds/wines/berries, black, greens and cooler browns I think would be terrific on you.

Had, the black been solid colour I would have said no, but the white pattern does help. As you said yourself, not your best, but not your worst colour.

Thanks, Diane. Now tell me how I look in ivory - see pic I just posted of me in my wedding dress. I'm dying to know what people think of me in that color. I don't wear much ivory, either. I usually wear some sort of mixture of ivory and black or ivory and navy rather than a solid color.

Thanks, Angie. I highly value your opinion, and must say that I do apply more makeup if going out at night wearing black. That doesn't happen that often, though. I rarely wear solid black anywhere near my face. I have some tops that have lower necklines and are prints with black in the background. Those seem to look better on me.

many of your comments lead me to believe you're an autumn. If you look bad in pastels and pink doesn't work on your face -- seems more autumnal.

I'm kind of wondering that, Smittie. But which type of Autumn? Deep, Soft or Warm? Navy is one of my favorite neutrals, if that means anything. I could do without black if navy were easier to come by.

Not sure if you've seen Truth is Beauty before, but she has a lot of information around what your best and worst colors might indicate about your color season ... e.g. pastel blue being bad on your might indicate Warm Autumn, peach being bad might indicate Dark Winter. Incidently, I saw somewhere else that clear navy is good on Dark Autumns, which might split the difference between the other two!!

FWIW, my personal experience has been that no matter how granular I've gone with seasons, I still need to tweak them to fit my personal coloring, personality, etc. .... so if I was doing it again, I'd just stop at "winter" and then just play from there to figure the rest out for my own personal palette. Just a thought Have fun exploring; it's addictive, and hope you'll keep posting about it!

Angie, if you say there's such a thing as a Cool Autumn, then maybe that's what I am. This whole thing gets complicated when it shouldn't be. I just know I always gravitate towards the darker colors. I don't know if that's my color palette or if it's just that I happen to like those colors. I can go with or without black, though. Black is just one of those things.

Stick to cool colours and you're good to go. You can absolutely wear lilac and light blue, though. Those are cool pastels, which in the right intensity, are fab with your complexion.

Torontogirl, I took the short quiz at the Truth is Beauty website and was told I'm likely a Dark Winter. I answered that I'm not overwhelmed by black. I don't think it's my very best color, but I don't think it overpowers me the way I've seen it do on other people. It's hard to be objective, but I think I'm right. Is it possible to be a Dark Winter & not wear anything that's pink or pinkish???
