How are you evolving your style for spring?

Angie mentioned on a thread that she always asks client's how they wish to evolve their style for the season. I thought it would make a great thread so I'm throwing it out there.

Personally, I am losing some of the floral patterns in favour of simple colour blocks in my usual colour palette. I'm also trying to buy woven tops, the overall effect is less romantic and slightly more preppy. I'm quite surprised that I have not bought any flares yet and I'm not feeling the itch.

I'll try to buy as little as possible, because I have already splashed a lot on winter items, and I feel I have no holes to fill.
But, as I had a recent epiphany about my color season (I wanted badly to be a cool summer, but it seems that I'm, after all, an autumn), I'll be using more colors from that palette in my spring wardrobe.

We usually have practically no spring weather, but go from freezing to hot and humid overnight. The spring things I have, like cream cord pants, white jeans and a lavendar blazer get very little use the rest of the year because the colors and weight just don't seem right. I'll be shopping my closet for more color.
I'm also heading the opposite direction from Julie and adding more romantic tops and wearing fewer preppy pieces. I have some slightly flared trousers and don't plan to add any. Tucking experiments will be part of my spring style evolution. That means some pants with gaping side pockets need the pockets sewn shut and new, longer belts need to be found since the pants are lower than my waist.

I'm with Joy. May is generally our spring, so I only need a handful of pieces if any for "spring." Some years we skip spring all together and it stays cold into june, and other years it is 95 degrees on May 9th. That is one thing I will miss about the desert--- the march and april cherry blossoms, although we have actual green grass and our apples and plums will bloom if they don' t freeze.

As Angie and other forum members have mentioned, I am in transition. In late march I should have a better idea as to where I am interning. In the meantime, most of my purchases will pieces that can bring my casual style up a notch and closer to my personal style, with the idea that I can wear some of the pieces to work in the future.

Right now I have red on the brain!

I'm loving the color-blocking and will seek out the PERFECT pieces to add to my recently culled wardrobe.

Leopard print flats and a short deep teal trench coat are STILL at the top of my shopping list.

I'm feeling the itch to go a little preppier as well -- I don't want to be totally preppy, but just add some of those elements to the wardrobe. Looking for bright, relatively light layers for spring and summer mornings, and maybe some woven, collared sleeveless tops.

I've already added 70's touches to my style and desperately want midi and tea length skirts and dresses (for Summer actually). I am going quite classic for a change. I really want to wear fewer accessories and wear even more streamlined clothes. I'm really going to pump my button downs.

I want pictures of everyone's evolving styles and that's a YLF order. I am very demanding this Monday morning.

I'm not planning to do a ton of purchasing this spring, but I do need some basics. I bought the long and leans and a fun draw string blouse. I plan to simplify my style a bit this spring. I think last year I was still experimenting and doing alot of layering and mixing which translated into a bit of busy-ness at times. I'm enjoying lately the simpler look of a pretty blouse, jeans and a long simple necklace. A couple of simple summer dresses will hopefully find their way into my closet as well.

Great question and it makes me think. . . I hope to find flares that work for me and try tucking.

I promised myself to get only comfortable footwear from now on.

I also want to stay true to *my style* (whatever that is) even when trying new looks like Chanel MOTG or fur vest or . . . It sounds like a contradiction, but I figure it's more of a balance.

I also want to stay simple/streamlined. That's more in my nature than lots of layers, but it's been fun doing layers in the colder seasons.

I'm not really buying anything new, just replacing things as they get too big (since I am finally losing weight again). So, I am evolving my style by putting together new combinations of items that I already have in my closet. I've really been amazed how many new combinations I can come up with that still feel like 'me'.

I am with DebbieK, I just want to be a little hipper. I feel as if I have been "studying" here at YLF for well over a year and I have acquired some fun things, but I haven't felt really comfortable wearing those things. So I just want to do it and try some combinations that I haven't done before....and I want to paint my toe nails RED, tomato red !

I guess I want to be less reserved.

(Your question made me chuckle because Lady Gaga made her entrance into the Grammys in an egg. Her publicist said she was "evolving". That is a little too much for me, so don't expect any eggs or meat outfits from me.....yet. )

I have my fab white Gap flares, and I'd like to find some fun woven tops to wear with them. I've ordered a few skirts in fun colors and hope they fit -- that will be a great wardrobe boost and a nice change from gray and black "bottoms." Generally I think my spring/summer evolution will involve more color.

Evolving style is like... intermediate, or advanced user level.

I am still at the beginner level and actually rather happy with that. That's still being somewhere, not so long ago I was nowhere specific with my style.

I'm with Ellie; I am still on the "bunny slope" of style and trying to figure out what I like and what looks good on me (versus just buying something because it fits and isn't hideous). But I'm not wearing my hoodies anymore!

Since I'm on the quest of losing some weight, I won't be adding much in my spring wardrobe. I've already got a few fab finds in thrift stores... A Talbots fitted blouse & a wide legged jean. I want to add a striped top and maybe a floral one, a couple dresses or skirts that is lighter color for spring.

The bunny slope... great analogy. LOL That's exactly where I am. I have 7 lbs left to lose so I'm trying to not buy anything until I get closer to my goal size. In the mean time I'm doing lots of closet purging as things get too silly-big to wear anymore.

Once I can finally shop, I'm planning on focusing on basics but with more stylish leanings than I've had before. I'll stay away from lots of basic t-shirts and get more wovens.... jeans and shorter skirts rather than the all-ankle-length-skirts of my past... updated sweaters rather than only librarian-style... etc.

I'm trying to evolve away from black to brown, but so far I'm not doing well in finding browns I like.

I need to buy a couple of new skirts, one dressy and one casual, to replace skirts that are now too big.

My big evolution is into better-looking footwear. I have declared this the Year of the Shoe for me. I'm looking for comfortable, stylish shoes that fit my size 10 1/2 problem feet. Before I get dressed every day I have to start with the shoes first, but soon I hope to have enough choices to pick the outfit first in the knowledge that I do have shoe choices in my closet.

Fortunately, many brands are finally providing more styles for feet that need extra padding and good support. I rely on Barkingdogshoes.com and customer reviews online. Next I've got to let go of my beat up Clark's and SAS lace ups.

I'm trying to incorporate more of the 70's into my wardrobe, although not too much because it isn't really "my" decade and I find it very hard to wear. I have a pair of flares, clogs, a pendant necklace, a shaggy waistcoat, and I plan to get a floppy hat. I think that's more than enough.

This summer, I will be wearing dresses less often. Still very frequently, but not 7 days a week. The inability to change things up and layer got boring fast last year, and finding dresses that are cool and breathable while still being decent and bra-friendly is harder than ever. I'm searching for good alternates to dresses. My harem pants are lightweight and breezy, but I need more tops for them. Since blouses are supposed to be more prevalent, I thought this would be easy, but most of them are loosey-goosey 70's boho styles and therefore don't really work with my slouchy harems. Short shorts aren't appropriate for work, I don't like bermudas, and clams are too tight. I'd like to find a way to make a pair of relaxed linen pants funky and hip...but it will definitely be a task to get them to work with my style.

I'm also going to try my best to avoid both sleeveless and voluminous styles. I still love volume but I feel like I have a lot of it already, and I need more structure for the wider bottoms that are becoming more prevalent. Sleeveless just annoys me and I have had enough gappy, puckery armholes for one lifetime. I want more cap sleeves (sorry YLF).

Style-wise, I still feel I'm all over the place. Sometimes 60s, sometimes 70s, sometimes grunge, sometimes Ralph Lauren classic. Like a lot of you, I am in an intense learning phase. I take more pictures of WIW but don't post them because once I see the picture, I already know it doesn't work.

The two thing I know for sure about S/S 2011 is I am ecstatic about the return of wide-legs and flares, plus equally ecstatic about wearing brights like orange and red which people here say suit me (although I never felt that before, I thought black was my color).

I'd like to add a machine washable dress or two that will work with layering into fall (and give my jeans a break). Also a long pendant necklace for a hint of 70s, a pair of clogs and a bright colored skirt for some fun.

For anyone who thinks that YLF has a set style, they should read this thread. Preppy, romantic, 70s, 60s, dresses, no dresses, skirts of every length ...

For me, well I'm softening up - pastels and soft, flowing fabrics. What works for me in spring is to keep the clothing very similar to fall (meaning, long-sleeved tops, pants, boots, jackets, dresses with stockings) but lighten up the color palette. Wearing faded denim, light-colored boots - that's how I make the transition.

I'm still working toward a more mod style so I'm hoping to add some graphic black and white prints (found one top already!), crisp white pants, enamel jewelry, colorful flats.

I was just thinking about this this morning! I think spring is easy, same as fall but with more white/light gray instead of black bases; with lots of 70s/80s (but even more dramatically so!), stripes, scarves. Summer is a totally different story. I've no idea what I want for summer, like for actual HOT weather, mainly because we don't get a lot of it. Shorts? Skirts? Linen pants? Pretty sure when it's hot I just melt and complain. No idea what fits into my style. Still thinking. All I know is: less solid/more print, less basic/more unique.

EDIT: After seeing Rae's "That 70s Outfit" (#6 here) I want something like this for hot days!

You gals have some great plans there and I cannot wait for the WIW pics.

Its pouring rain & not super hot today, so it actually has made me think about what our 1 month long autumn might bring for me... if May ever arrives LOL (Although the weather has been so crazy here lately that perhaps we will have a longer than usual Autumn!).

I REALLY want to rock the wide leg pants look, with cute little menswear inspired vests. I just don't know if I will actually be able to pull it off as the images in my mind are VERY dressy, and YES, I still have issues with challenging my environmental norm.

Having said that though, I imagine me wearing much the same through winter too!

I wish I had this much enthusiasm for summer dressing LOL

Priorities for me this spring are woven tops/dresses and footwear. My shoe collection is a little dull and could use a pick-me-up, and I have my eye on some black andwhite animal print flats (the one from Angie's Chanel formula post) that may get that ball rolling. I still want cute loafers, and maybe even some flesh-toned sandals. Properly-fitting woven items are incredibly hard to find for my figure, but the ones that work do wonders for my self-esteem. They will be a key focus.
I sort of love the idea of fun longer-length skirts, too. I used to have a turquoise one that i loved pairing with a white sleeveless blouse, and recreating something like that has appeal if I can find a flattering skirt. A denim equivalent to the Halogen skirt would also be welcome.

Julie, these questions make me feel like I am still in kindergarten! I have hardly wrapped my head about what I wear now and you already think about spring. You are light years ahead of me here!
I would like to break out my new wide leg pants and build outfits around them so I am waiting for the snow to melt impatiently. I guess I need more blouses and button down shirts for that as well as some shoes with higher heels. I would also like to find wide leg jeans with a looser fit in the thigh.
Other than that I have no idea so I need to watch Angie and YLF fashion forward ladies for an inspiration!
