How are these not culottes

I have always always loved the culotte look. A woman at church rocks them all winter long - Black tights and black booties - Gorgeous I tell you.

So help educate me - thinking of getting the pants below. Looking back at Angie's pics for culottes - some look like these with a more narrow leg.

These are advertised as wide leg crops. Help me understand.

Side note I think they are styled terrible with the boots they have them paired with. Agree or disagree?

I don't think there is a difference between wide leg crops and culottes other than marketing. But I could be wrong . . .

I think of culottes as looking like an A-line skirt, split. These to me look like wide, straight pants cut short.

It looks to me like they taper a bit at the ends, or are cut really, really straight. Ditto rachylou- I think of culottes as a split skirt.

I think there is overlap in modern advertising but I also think of them as fuller and more A- line. I think the forum has shown some straighter.
The item you showed is getting pretty straight, wide and long for culottes and more than the name, they tend to be harder to make look flattering. I do think that monochromatic tights and boots change the dynamic of all bottoms because that can mitigate all kinds of length& leg line issues.

Feel free to call them culottes! Or gauchos (my personal favorite)! Just wear what you love and what works best for you. I'm most attracted to culottes as more of a split skirt -- partly because I'm ready for the A-line skirt to make a comback.

I agree - I think it's a matter of semantics to get caught up in the labelling of such a pant as "cropped wide legs ", "culotte" or whatever. I have to admit that to me, the picture above isn't doing the model any favours- the pants look too long to work with that shoe - makes her legs look shorter than they need to.

Looking at the photo with a critical eye, I would say that if the overall width at the hemline level of the silhouette is a little wider then the width at hip level, regardless of dress size then I think the silhouette lends itself to being called culottes.

I feel that the look of the garment in your photo is more of a trouser and less of a culotte, as they seem a tad narrower at hemline.
