Hourglass or pear? Or something completely different?

Hi! I stumbled across this forum and looked at all the great advice given to everyone, especially with determining body types. I hope you can also help me identify my shape, as I'm really quite unsure.

Hi Anna,

From the picture it looks as if your shoulders are wider than your hips? So I would say inverted triangle with hourglass as secondary body type.

@Inge Wow, really? I've always thought of myself as pear-ish because of my somewhat wider hips. (33.5 hips versus 30.5 bust). I never really factored my shoulders into the equation. I suppose they're quite square, which always left me confused, because in the pear description sloping shoulders seem to be the fit. How interesting.

Ah yes, people often only look at the bust-hip ratio, but Angie has taught us to take the shoulder-hip ratio into account too. You have beautiful shoulders:-) and because they are a little wider than your hips, inverted triangle is my first thought. You have a lovely defined waist, so that says hourglass as secondary body type to me. If you browse the archives you'll find lots of tips on how to dress the different body types if that's of interest to you.

@Verdy excellent. More opinions are always great. I'm still so shocked! Always thought myself a pear!

I will just add some measurements for reference:

Shoulders: 35.5/36, not completely sure
Bust: 30.5
Waist: 23
Hips: 33.5

Anna, if you measure straight across you shoulders (rather than round them) and then do the same at the widest point of your hips, you can easily tell whether your shoulders are wider than hips - Inverted Triangle, balanced - Hourglass or Rectangle, or narrower than hips - Pear.

Oh, yes, shoulders are important.
I would say that you LOOK like a slim hourglass, but if your measurements are right, then: inverted triangle.

@Summer @Cat Ah yes, I will try to measure from the front. For now I'm nowhere near a measuring tape though, so that'll have to wait until one is available.

Just chiming in to say that the rectangle guidelines might be of use as well. I found myself, with a small bust, those for the top half of the body were useful.

I just wanted to say thank you for raising this question because I have always wondered the same thing! I never was quite sure what shape I was and have a horrible time trying to dress myself some days! lol.

Also, thank you for sharing the helpful info. Shoulders are included too?! who knew?

Bodies are strange! I, too, found many things become clear when I incorporated my shoulders into my measurements. I seem like an hourglass, because I'm quite busty -- but my narrow shoulders mean that a lot of "pear" advice applies.

I'd recommend you ignore your linear measurements and look at the shape you present, a quite slim hourglass (smaller bust) with a sharp shoulder line. If you ignore your waist and curves, clothes will overpower your top and bottom. You're a slender curvy figure, you look good and healthy. Find a quality tailor and show us what you'd love to wear
