Highlights tomorrow--what color?

I am at the shaggy tail-end of my haircut cycle, and am looking forward to my appointment tomorrow. After years of fearing color, I finally had my first highlights put in around 9 months ago. It is past time to update them.

Please weigh in with any thoughts you have about what color I should ask for, as well as intensity/brightness. The first time around, I had very subtle honey/blonde highlights put in, but I might be ready to be more bold now.

For reference, I have included a current picture of my hair. I know the highlights are hard to see, sorry.

The nice thing about highlights and shorter hair is that you don't have to live with them long. Your coloring seems to be similar to mine--at least to what was my "real" hair color. Your eyes are light brown or hazel, right? I don't like my hair to be too blonde or too high contrast. I think the subtle highlights are great.

On the other hand, if you want brighter or lighter, go for it. You can have tone it down later.

I am fascinated by your necklace. Could you tell us more about it?

I like the honey highlights, too. They look very natural. But I totally understand the urge to go bolder and LESS natural. You might want to consider leaving the color of the highlights the same but asking your colorist to make them "chunkier."

Melissa, your natural colouring is low contrast - so I would stick with lower contrast highlights. Just the fact that they're new will make them bolder

I have really fine bright blonde and some darker blonde highlights, my hair is naturally dark brown though there is some copper and plum left over from previous streaks, I think blonde streaks would look great on you x

I have learned my lesson with highlights! Bring photos. One person's honey is another persons caramel. You ask for Butterscoth you get Mocha- yeah- now I'm just saying foods

I wanted subtle "honey" colored highlights and got something WAY lighter than I expected. Pictures help overcome the language and give the stylist a good idea of what contrast and color level you are looking for.

I agree with Taylor trust your stylish. My hairdresser has picked all my colours so far. I've done copper, plum and blonde so far. She's made the suggestion for colour and I've gone yep! and I let her get on with choosing the tone, I've loved all the results so far x

Taylor and Louise are right. I do trust my stylist, and will probably take his suggestions.

MsMaven, yep, I am a hazel girl. Mostly brown and green that just reads as "darkish." Re: the necklace, I will post info about it in my black and white outfit thread. I bought it on etsy.

Mary, thanks for the "chunkier" comment--that helps me break out of my rut of thinking that highlights are always subtle.

Lynne, that was such a helpful observation! I'm not a visual person, and so I often struggle to notice the most basic things, like contrast.

Thanks for the photos, Louise. Your hair looks great! DanaLynn, you're right--photos are always a good ideas. Becky, I was thinking slightly reddish, so maybe I'll do a combo of reddish and honey.

We'll see how it turns out tomorrow.
