*Update! w photos and K/R q (High-waisted denim recos?)

I recently got this Madewell top per one of Angie's recent round-up of recos (thanks Angie!) but it's pretty short so now I need a pair of highwaisted jeans to go with it. It's not a usual proportion I'd go for (I tend to pair tunics with skinnies) but DH loved the top so I think I'll give this silhouette a whirl.

I'm a bit apple-y/rectangle-y and short waisted, and prefer skinnies or straight cuts that are ankle length or full length (which I'd roll), and I'm not picky about wash.

I'd love any recommendations or suggestions for brands to check out!

*UPDATE:

I'm keeping the jeans in photos 1+2, a Gap cropped "perfect girlfriend" pair that is mid-rise but almost comes to my belly button so is effectively high-waisted on me! The Madewell button fly pair in 3+4 is fun but a bit too tight and is going back.

My new question is: K/R on the Madewell tops?

These are both mediums - I tried a small but it looks too shrunken on me. I love the back detailing, but does the boxiness of this cut work??? If so, do I need to pair with a wider leg?

(Also, one kitten tail is sharking by in photo 1, and another is showing off her mittens in photo 5.)

I have tried Madewell in the past but got talked into sizing down and unfortunately ended up consigning them.

But there's a solid version of this top that I'm going to order from Madewell so that gives me an excuse to try a pair or two of their denim, too. And those AG crops look promising, too!

JuniperGreen, your body type sounds like mine. I have had good luck with Kuts, but SA's will try to get you to size way down. You probably will have to go down a size and they do expand a bit when wearing, but resist going down multiple sizes unless it really is the best fit. Our bodies are hard to fit in the high rise because if the waist fits, there is too much fabric in the rear. That is an alteration that I have had a professional try and it does not work.

Thanks Joy! I have never tried Kuts so will have to give them a go.

The challenge is definitely in looking for brands that don't have a large hip to waist ratio. I'm giving high-rises a hopeful try as I love the look of the boxy, swingy cropped tops on others, and am determined to find my own way to wear them (fully knowing it will be a JFE look).

I would check the Gap. I have a hard time with high rise jeans either being sausage like or too tight at the waist. I've found that theirs come in less at the waist for a given hip dimension. They do change around a lot from season to season but I have high rise skinnies from last year that are great for me.

Thanks all! Now waiting on my Madewell order and hopeful for a good fit. I had some luck at the gap today with their "best girlfriend" fit jeans. They're described as mid-rise, but I guess since I'm short-waisted they were basically high-rise on me.
Dottie funny you mention trouser jeans - I got a pair of slim fit trouser jeans at BR in the Sloan today (everything was on sale everywhere). Will post pics and finds later once the Madewell order comes in for comparison!

Updated with photos! I've tried on over a 15 pairs in the past week and the Gap "best girlfriend" was the winner. No luck with a wider leg pair though, so the hunt continues.

Now I'm just waffling on these Madewell tops...

The plaid top is awesome especially with your new jeans.

I'm less sold on the white top. It doesn't have the same ease as the plaid one.

You look great in all of it! The tops are not too boxy and didn't you say DH loved the tops? I love the second pair of jeans with the buttons showing but agree comfort is paramount so back they go. The Gap pair are great.
