BJ, go for it! NaNoWriMo is all about adapting it so it's helpful for you (IMO).
Ana, I have the same problem. I've gone back and looked at my old NaNo novels and they would need a heavy rewrite to be usable (although I flatter myself that part of the reason is that I've just gotten better at writing in the intervening years - last year I got pneumonia in November and was out of it most of the month). I don't think I'm a 2k a day person, even when I have something already outlined - it's just not that good when I force myself to write that much. I'm sure I write that much total most days, including emails and blog posts and whatever short articles I'm working on, but not usually on one project unless I'm really on a tear.
I write nonfiction and fiction both, but have had more success with nonfiction so far.
